Retirement of Rob Helyar - and Continuity of Supplies

Oliver Shaw

Edited

For many years an ever-increasing number of small boat cruising sailors have used the reefing systems  -  and headsail reefing in particular  -  developed by Rob Helyar,  and marketed as Flexible Reefing Spars.   I suspect that at least some of that popularity has been on my personal recommendation;  I myself have used his systems on two GP14s,  on my club's Wayfarers,  and my Privateer 20,  as well as recommending it to numerous others who have gone on to buy it and use it.

Sadly,  Rob has now reached the point where the arthritis in his thumbs makes the physical manufacture of the reefing spars increasingly painful,  and he has been forced to retire.

However Richard Hartley, of Hartley Boats, who purchased the majority of the spars which Rob made to put on the cruising Wayfarers, was very keen to take on the manufacture of all the reefing spars when he heard that Rob was struggling.

For those who also sail larger boats,  Rob has further developed the system such that it works equally well on cruising boats up to about 29 feet.   This increase in overall size required upgrading the luff wire from 3mm to 4mm,  which in its self does not cause a problem but of course it involves larger forces both to make the cringles and for the crimping in general.

Richard is very keen to carry on making the reefing system for all the different classes which Rob had been supplying.    richard"AT"hartleyboats.com

Hope this helps some of you.

Oliver :

Sorry we won’t see you at Bala.

Like you, being of similar vintage, I might have repaired my car myself back in the days when they were  simpler to maintain.

I just restrict myself to things like thermostats, etc these days.

Good luck,  and enjoy the Rally.

Regret that I am out of action;  quite apart from it being a weekend,  and so clashes with my church commitments (I am Organist and Choirmaster),  I have very major car problems.

It appears to be either blown head gasket or cracked head.   That is the sort of repair that I used to take in my stride in my twenties and thirties,  but the last time I took on something of this magnitude was 40 years ago this year,  and at age 78 it is more than I feel able to take on now  -  especially as the Discovery is so complex,  and requires significant preparatory work underneath the car to gain access to rotate the crankshaft in order to line up the timing marks.   And the car is probably not worth the cost of having it repaired professionally,  especially as even if that were done there is then the completely unknown cost of getting it through MOT;   either one expense would be reasonable,  but not both.

So even though Bala is geographically the nearest rally to me I can’t get there,  and indeed because of the car problems I have not yet done anything about putting the boat back into commission for this year.

But enjoy the event!

I will try to make the occasional rally next year,  by which time I hope to have been able to replace the car.

Hi Shipmates,

We plan on launching at Bala Friday evening . Looking forward to the meeting and sailing on Bala again.

Preparing Rainbow this weekend , she has a small crack on the hull & some gel coat repair. Been waiting

for the warm weather so the repairs will cure well.

Best Regards

Dave & Rach Astley.

    Dear Shipmates
    Emerging from Lockdown
It appears that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it's not FL.BLUE...

From the government announcements it is clear we are starting to emerge from lockdown;  good news to hear that from Monday 29th March 2021, the Government will allow outdoor sports facilities to reopen, broadening the options for outdoor exercise and recreation; formally organised outdoor sports – for adults and under 18s - can restart from Monday 29th March 2021.
Shipmates can get on the water from this date onwards.  But remain circumspect and do not surrender this hard-won freedom carelessly.

Things go wrong when not used. So check your boats carefully -   Run your outboard before you go anywhere- is there a flow of cooling water, does it run when you put it in gear, etc?  Mine started 4th pull but died as soon as I  put it in gear.. Cure was srip and clean the carburetter and filter, drain the tank and ditch old fuel. Spare plug and spanner? Spare fuel can?

Check the rigging- all shrouds secure, rigging screws locked, etc.  Pulleys and blocks free, including the masthead sheave? Chainplates OK?  Shackles moused?

Anchor, chain and warp?  including the shackles.

Nothing got taken off the boat and not put back?  Toolkit, bosun's bag, sheets...

Trailer OK - tyres, hitch, rust, lights, numberplate?

If it can go wrong it will.  So don't become a statistic.

Good sailing all - let's hope for good weather and fair winds.

Please note, that as at 28 March, the Shipmate Association has suspended it's sailing programme for 2020. The website - www.shipmate.org.uk - has been updated to reflect this decision. Keep safe - Phil W.
