Re: Is Self-Employment being Criminalized?

Hi everyone - reminder that we will be meeting in a little more than an hour at Charlie's Best Bread in Pacific Beach.  Not sure how many people will come because I have announced in a few different places but it should be an interesting discussion.    Hope you can make it but if not here are a few articles to brief you on what is going on - but they obviously just scratch the surface of a very big issue.   This will likely be our "first word" on this topic, not our last one because we have lots to talk about.

Is Self-Employment being Criminalized?

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to remind you that we will be meeting as usual on this Thursday, 1:30 PM,  at Charlie's Best Bread in Pacific Beach. This week we are going to be doing something we have never done before, but that is probably overdue.  We will be discussion recent political developments that impact independent professionals and our place in the greater society - both now, and in the future.

The most prominent of these issues is the highly controversial AB5 (California Assembly Bill 5) that was intended to regulate the gig economy, but has already had a huge number of unintended consequences. Did you know that you can no longer offer your services to a corporation if what you are doing for them is the central focus of their business - or that if you are a freelance writer you can only get paid for 15 articles per month unless you are classified as an employee?

I will be talking to a labor attorney later this afternoon about presenting an overview of the new laws, and have also imitated contacts with a few activists working to get this law repealed, but we will be having this meeting regardless of who leads the discussion. I have posted some draft material for the announcement I will be making below but I may have ranted too much for an event description  so many tone it down a bit before publishing.

My own opinion is that these laws are draconian and that they were pushed through by politicians and unions without even taking our opinions or interests into consideration. They got away with it because unlike the unions, self-employed and independent workers are not organized so they didn't need to worry about what we thought. This seems to have attracted a great deal of attention so ironically AB5 may help change that.

It is possible that you may have a different opinion - perhaps you think these laws are important to prevent exploitation of Uber drivers and other gig workers, and if so you are welcome to express that opinion - both in the meeting on Thursday, or right here on this thread. Regardless of our different takes we all may have on this, it is an important discussion to have so I hope you will consider joining us.

Is Self-Employment being Criminalized? The changing legal and political environment for independent professionals

San Diego Independent Business Professionals (SDIBP) will be meeting Thursday, November 21st, 1:30 PM at "Charlie's Best Bread" in Pacific Plaza (1808 Garnet between Kendall Street & Lamont Street).

This month's meeting will be a discussion about recent legislation and political developments that affect self-employed professionals. This includes the AB5 (California Assembly Bill 5) that was pushed through the legislature by politicians and unions wanting to regulate gig economy workers and collect payroll taxes on the platforms they use. This law makes it much harder for companies to classify workers as independent contractors rather than employees While there are "exceptions" it will almost certainly affect the way many of us work and even the "exceptions" are problematic. For example, freelance writers are now limited to submitting 35 articles a year to any one publication after which they must give up their independent status and become an employee of that publication.

Meanwhile, Uber - the company used as an excuse used to start the whole thing, says they won't comply with the law anyway - that their drivers are already independent contractors not doing work central to the mission of their organization. They have already written their own legislation and are gathering signatures to have it put on the ballet, but all it does is grant them an "exception" - it doesn't grant us any additional rights. Also in the news, the San Diego Police Department has "cracked down" on home-based massage therapists claiming, without evidence, that it intended to curb "sex slave trafficing" in the region. This has been a debate between politicians, unions, corporations and other big moneyed interests. What seems to be missing from all these debates is actual independent professionals - no one ever asked us what we thought of all this.

Clearly we have lots to talk about. While it may be too late to change laws that have already been written we need to learn how to work with them if we can, how to work around them if we have to, and the big question of what exactly it means to be "independent" in this new world being built by politicians, corporations and unions.

As a reminder, San Diego Independent Business Professionals, will meeting this month on our usual "third Thursday" at 1:30 PM slot at our usual place: "Charlie's Best Bread" in Pacific Beach. For the past several meetings, we have been learning some of the secrets from consultants and coaches in the corporate world and how they can be used by self-employed professionals.

We are going to continue that this month with a presentation and discussion led by management consultant David Brownlee. He is the author of the best-selling book, "Rockstar Customer Service" and the producer of a popular Youtube channel for sales and marketing professionals. At this meeting, David will share some of his best secrets about customer service and how they can be used for self-employed and small business professionals.  This has been announced on Eventbrite and Meetup.com so you can read a more complete meeting description here: https://www.meetup.com/sdibp001/events/265413978/

Should be a fun meeting and it would be nice to reconnect with some of you. Hope you can make it.

Yesterday's SDIBP meeting

Happy Friday everyone!

We had fun at yesterday's SDIBP meeting. This was a discussion about "leadership for the self-employed" and Heidrum Ziche delivered as promised and shared some of the secrets she has learned about leadership from the corporate world. If you would like to know about her and her business coaching practice please visit her website at: http://topleadersnow.com

There were just three of us at this meeting but we had a great conversation. I would have liked to have had more people attend but I take responsibility for that - the notice went out late and the mailing list for this group needs more attention. There are many people who have attended our meetings who have not been invited here so I will be working to get our member information better organized. T

The Youtube video below will give you a flavor of this meeting but obviously it is better to attend in real life - the sound quality of this is not great, and as everyone knows, often the most important parts of meetings happen before and after the formal discussions. Also in attendance was Silvia - the head of a company that manages a coastal property in Baja California just South of Rosarito - to learn more about her business visit here website at: https://baja-rentals.com. I must say that it was a treat for me getting the chance to talk to two smart and successful business women like this:

https://youtu.be/cpa1xm5vRag

I will try to be a little more diligent in getting the next meeting planned and announced earlier but remember for future reference we always meet on the Third Thursday of each month except for August and December - and always at Charlie's Best Bread as long as they will have us

Hope you all have an awesome weekend.

Re: THIS THURSDAY: Leadership for Self-Employed Professionals

LAST  CALL:  In case you forgot SDIBP will be meeting in just a few hours at Charlie's Best Bread at 1:30 PM.  We will be discussing "leadership" with international business consultant Heidrun Ziche.  Should  be an interesting meeting.  Try to make it if you can.

Rob

THIS THURSDAY: Leadership for Self-Employed Professionals

Hi Everybody,

As a reminder, SDIBP (San Diego Independent Business Professionals) will be meeting this Thursday, 1:30 PM at our usual place: Charlies Best Bread in Pacific Beach. We meet on the third Thursday of each month with the exception of August and December, and with our summer break over it is time to roll up our sleeves and get back to business.

This month we will be having a discussion about a topic we have never before addressed directly: the whole concept of "leadership" and what that means for self-employed professionals. To lead this discussion, we are delighted that management consultant Heidrun Ziche has agreed to share some of her considerable knowledge on this topic with us. Heidrun is an international business woman who has lived and worked in three continents and has worked with corporate executives in almost every country in the world. Besides being an attorney, economist, mediator, and certified coach, Heidrun is also an athlete and who competes in running and triathlon events.

While independent professionals may not have employees or "teams" in the traditional sense, we all have stake-holders, customers, prospects and other people we work with. Heidrun will show us how to stand out and become a respected leader in our business and communities, and we are really happy to have her present to this group.

It is not easy to get a speaker of this caliber so please make an extra effort to join us.  These meetings are fun and it is also important for us to connect and catch up with each other.  The world is changing, and we have lots to talk about.  Hope to see you there.

She also led us in a discussion about the techniques we use for managing our own "time and energy". Re: Capsule: A short self-development course

OK, I may have jumped the gun on this - it seems their definition of "free" is rather creative and they make you enter your Paypal account for getting a free "week" - and I am not sure that even gives access to all nine lessons - after that, it is $84 a year.  That may still be a good deal, but it seems a little deceptive the way they did it and I probably should have checked it out more thoroughly before I sent that message.  Sorry for the interruption - hope you are all having a great hump day :-)

Rob

Capsule: A short self-development course

I am not trying to bombard you guys with information about online courses.  This popped up in a feed just a few minutes after I signed up for that Y-combinator course so it's just a coincidence  It looks interesting though, and it doesn't seem like there is much to lose from checking it out.  I don't know anything beyond the blurb I pasted below and what is on their website at: https://www.createcapsule.com/

Capsule is a nine-topic course and Q&A service covering the psychology that often separates successful careers and relationships from ones that flounder.
"Read" 139 scientific studies, condensed to ~3 hours, on:
Mental / emotional management
Goal-setting & decision-making
Relationships & communication
Leadership & self-awareness

Y-Combinator: free online startup school (deadline August 4th)

There is a difference between startup founders and independent professionals, but there is also a good deal of overlap too. While most of us aren't generally looking for venture capital funding I thought this was an interesting opportunity and decided to pass it on. The startup accelerator "Y-combinator" has set up a free online "startup school" and it is open to everyone. If you have never heard of "Y-combinator" it is based in San Francisco and is the most famous accelerator in the world. The companies they have helped launched include Dropbox, Stripe, Airbnb and many others.

Some companies get funded just by getting accepted and it is said to be harder to get in than Harvard Business School. Several years ago, I took a similar MOOC (massive open online course) in "entrepreneurial technology" from Standford University and I learned a great deal from it. The timing is right for me on this one because I have just started learning more about database technology with a funded private instructor and intend to use this class in conjunction with that. This started two days ago on July 22 and the deadline to join is August 4th if anyone is interested. https://www.startupschool.org/

Hi everyone,

Remember, the "third Thursday" is this week so we will have our usual meeting at Charlie's Best Bread in Pacific Beach. Professional business coach Janina Goldberg will be leading a discussion about, "time and energy management" an issue we all have to deal with so this should be an interesting meeting. I have pasted the event description for this meeting below - it was announced last week on Meetup.com, Eventbrite, and Nextdoor. Please try to make this meeting if at all possible; we won't be meeting in August and there are a few announcements I want to make about the group - and I want us all to reconnect before we start "summer mode" in earnest. Hope to see you there!

--

San Diego Independent Business Professionals (SDIBP) will be meeting on Thursday, July 18th, 1:30 PM at "Charlie's Best Bread" in Pacific Plaza (1808 Garnet between Kendall Street & Lamont Street).

This month's meeting will be a discussion about "time and energy management" led by Janina Goldberg, a professional business coach who specializes in personal productivity and work-life balance. Janina spent more than 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry, documenting processes, creating and delivering end-user training, overseeing and educating support teams and learning about efficiency and effectiveness before deciding to take her talents outside of the corporate world.

Janina understands that most entrepreneurs and small business owners really want to make a difference in the world but this often comes at a huge price: missing a sense of accomplishment, losing sight of the positive impact of their work and becoming a slave to their calendar. To address this issue, she has developed a set of tools, techniques, and approaches to help build awareness of our schedule and effectively manage "time" - our most important and critical resource.

Balancing work, business and personal time is an enormous challenge for self-employed professionals so we are delighted that Janina has offered to share her insights and considerable knowledge with us. She has indicated that she prefers to "lead a discussion" rather than just give a presentation so feel free to bring your questions, ideas, and issues about personal productivity, time management and scheduling to this meeting.

SDIBP is for independent contractors, freelance workers, small business owners (including home based) and anyone else working outside of the traditional employment system. It was previously named "Beach Area Self-Employed" but is being expanded to be a regional association with improved online and virtual services in addition to this monthly real-world meeting.

Our meetings are partly informal networking and partly a moderated discussion on a small business topic. There is no charge (support the venue) and anyone is welcome to attend. Since we know how much self-employed folks value their time, everyone is generally in and out within one hour. This is a great opportunity to learn something new while meeting some really smart and creative local professionals so we hope you will consider joining us.

Subject: [SDIBP] THIS THURSDAY: A Crash Course in Managing your Time and Schedule
