You know you were on my list of people to contact anyway with your Wordpress practice.  I am still waiting to hear if the contract has been approved for my database training - I am getting my grant from the same source where you got yours.  I would like to learn more about the backend database functions on Wordpress and how they can be customized.  Perhaps you are already good at that.  If not, maybe we can explore ways to work together one of these days.

Personal Productivity Systems: Comparing Notes

 

San Diego Independent Business Professionals (SDIBP) will be meeting this coming Thursday, June 20th, 1:30 PM at "Charlie's Best Bread" in Pacific Plaza (1808 Garnet between Kendall Street & Lamont Street).

For this month's meeting, we would like to do something a little different and a little less formal. We are going to get together to talk about the systems we have built for our own information management, contact data management, planning/scheduling and GTD (getting things done); communication tools and techniques, and anything else you have come up with as a self-employed professional to make your business life a little more efficient. Rob Gordon, founder of the group will be moderating and will be describing systems he has come up with of for task management, systems integration and producing a custom CRM (customer relationship management) system for your business without having to pay some fat monthly fee.

We would like to learn more about the systems you use as well, so we are calling this a "comparing notes" session. You know how you always learn something new when you work with another person on their own computer - everyone does things a little differently. As independent professionals, we don't get that experience nearly as often as people who work for bigger organizations do, so this is a small attempt to leverage our knowledge in these areas.  Also, most of what Rob uses will be Google-based systems but we all use different platforms or a mix of platforms - Apple, Microsoft, and others so you are welcome to discuss what you like best - we are here to learn from each other. 

Please bring your laptop so you can show us your productivity systems. It is not required - if you use systems on your smartphone more often bring that, or if you don't want to just a notepad and a pen.  This should be fun - please consider joining so we can have a chance to learn from each other.

Hey guys (and gals) - I'll update you about the SDIBP meeting on Thursday sometime tomorrow  - I actually have a hidden agenda, but right now I am up late and was wondering if anyone knows of a good lightweight text editor.  On the PC these would usually be called a "Notepad replacement" because they come with more functionality than notepad, but not that much more functionality.  This group has both writers and computer folks/programmers, and both those professions tend to make heavy use of text editing so I thought this might be a good place to ask.  I have tried a few - I have Notepad++  on my computer but don't like that.   One called NoteTab looks interesting but it is paid system - doesn't cost too much but I would like to get the best one.   I would like the ability to add a title before the file gets saved, autosave capability, markup for bold, italics, etc, spell check (not all have this if you can believe it).  I would also like some kind of filing system / exploring / tags etc.   I am using on called "Desktop Wiki" and I like it but I am wondering if there is anything else out there.   Well, now that I have confused you all I hope you are having an awesome evening for the night birds who are still up with me, or an awesome morning for the early birds who are reading this before I wake up.

Hey Rob,

My two favorites are Atom https://atom.io/ and DocPad https://www.gammadyne.com/docpad.htm - Atom is more of a developer/code editor, but is extremely extensible. 

I know a lot of folks that swear by Sublime Text https://www.sublimetext.com/ too. And all of them have spell check :-)

Not sure why you want a lightweight text editor, any reason not to just use open Office? You don't need to answer that question because it's only for you if you're looking for something simpler obviously that doesn't work but if you just want to create program that's free I would do the job and then some. Otherwise Google Sheets.

File organization, I use the brain, if I show up on Thursday I will be raving about about it. But it comes with a cost and I don't know about the free version, it may be enough for you. There is a learning curve but once you have it set it's phenomenal, 3d mind mapping software.

Thank you for this contribution Bryna - it is a good one.  The thing I like best about Boomerang is that it lets you delay the delivery of email messages, so the people I am trying to do business with don't think I am psychotic when they see I am sending messages at 3:30 am.

REMINDER: Working Meeting Today at 1:30

 

Hi everyone - a quick reminder that we will be meeting at Charlie's Best Bread in an hour and a half at 1:30 pm.   We will be talking about our own personal productivity systems and I will be moderating.  I just got a battery for this old dog computer of mine but the extra memory has not arrived yet, and this computer is pretty slow.
Also, I am not really prepared so the meeting is going to be a mess - but come anyway.  Hope a few of you can make it.

THIS WEDNESDAY: San Diego Remote Workers Coworking Meeting #coworking #meetings #events

 

Hi Everyone,

I meant to get out a recap on the last meeting, and I will, but in the meantime, I wanted to mention this coworking session I will be going to on Wednesday. It is being organized by a group called "San Diego Remote Workers Coworking" with the wonderful mission of helping remote workers meet face to face more often. They meet in different parts of the city but the past few times they have been meeting at "Second Nature" on Cass Street in Pacific Beach. While we are transitioning to what I would like to eventually be a regional association, at the moment most of our members are still in the beach area so I thought I would mention it.

P.S. We are looking for a presenter and moderator for our next meeting on July 18th - a week from this coming Thursday. I asked two different members if they would be willing to give a presentation on "Linkedin for Self-Employed Professionals" - because I think that network actually has gotten better since Microsoft bought it and many of us could probably be using it more effectively. If you are one of those two members perhaps this message will prod you? - if not could someone else help? Alternatively, could someone suggest a different topic or kind of meeting for the 18th?

There will be no meeting in August - we usually skip that "dog days of summer" month along with December which is too hectic for people to have to worry about another meeting. I do want to brief you all on what I am up to though - covered some of that in the last meeting but have some news since then.  I do want to get the plans in order for the 18th though so if someone could give a hand or has any ideas I would appreciate it.

This is a nice group - plus they meet every Wednesday in PB so I will be going again.  While we have a similar mission we will "stay the course" with SDIBP so I hope some of you can make our next meeting a week from tomorrow.   This "Remote Workers" group has a tradition of taking their group pictures with everyone doing something weird every week.  This week we were all supposed to hold up our forks for some reason and have included this picture for your amusement.  Missing from this picture is Dina - one of the organizers who took the picture

THIS THURSDAY: A Crash Course in Managing your Time and Schedule

Remember, the "third Thursday" is this week so we will have our usual meeting at Charlie's Best Bread in Pacific Beach. Professional business coach Janina Goldberg will be leading a discussion about, "time and energy management" an issue we all have to deal with so this should be an interesting meeting. I have pasted the event description for this meeting below - it was announced last week on Meetup.com, Eventbrite, and Nextdoor. Please try to make this meeting if at all possible; we won't be meeting in August and there are a few announcements I want to make about the group - and I want us all to reconnect before we start "summer mode" in earnest. San Diego Independent Business Professionals (SDIBP) will be meeting on Thursday, July 18th, 1:30 PM at "Charlie's Best Bread" in Pacific Plaza (1808 Garnet between Kendall Street & Lamont Street).

This month's meeting will be a discussion about "time and energy management" led by Janina Goldberg, a professional business coach who specializes in personal productivity and work-life balance. Janina spent more than 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry, documenting processes, creating and delivering end-user training, overseeing and educating support teams and learning about efficiency and effectiveness before deciding to take her talents outside of the corporate world.

Janina understands that most entrepreneurs and small business owners really want to make a difference in the world but this often comes at a huge price: missing a sense of accomplishment, losing sight of the positive impact of their work and becoming a slave to their calendar. To address this issue, she has developed a set of tools, techniques, and approaches to help build awareness of our schedule and effectively manage "time" - our most important and critical resource.

Balancing work, business and personal time is an enormous challenge for self-employed professionals so we are delighted that Janina has offered to share her insights and considerable knowledge with us. She has indicated that she prefers to "lead a discussion" rather than just give a presentation so feel free to bring your questions, ideas, and issues about personal productivity, time management and scheduling to this meeting.

SDIBP is for independent contractors, freelance workers, small business owners (including home based) and anyone else working outside of the traditional employment system. It was previously named "Beach Area Self-Employed" but is being expanded to be a regional association with improved online and virtual services in addition to this monthly real-world meeting.

Our meetings are partly informal networking and partly a moderated discussion on a small business topic. There is no charge (support the venue) and anyone is welcome to attend. Since we know how much self-employed folks value their time, everyone is generally in and out within one hour. This is a great opportunity to learn something new while meeting some really smart and creative local professionals so we hope you will consider joining us.
