Re: How the self-employed can discover their purpose, calling and passion

Hi Rob, I'm going to have to beg off today, after all. I just got a huge book project and need to make some serious progress on it (while working on a style guide for a 10-book series). Hope to see you next time. Bryna

Effective Email Strategies for Self-Employed Professionals
Hi Everyone, This month's presentation will be by Austin Beals, CEO of "Power Up" - an email marketing company. Austin will describe how independent professionals can use the same methods used by big companies to build up their self-employed practice. The one thing we have in common is using email with customers and prospects, so anything we can learn to be better at it is bound to be of great benefit. Austin will also lead a discussion with our members on this topic - our problems, issues and approaches to give us a chance to learn from each other, so you won't want to miss this important meeting.

Re: Unable to make it Thursday
Hi @Bryna Kranzler No worries, we really appreciate your support. Hope to catch you next time. @Larisa Hall SDIBP (San Diego Independent Business Professionals) s a "repurposing" of the old BASE (Beach Area Self-Employed). We kept getting attendees from other parts of the region and I realized there are few groups in San Diego representing independent professionals. Your company may be more on the "small business" side of the spectrum, but we appreciate your support as well. This month's meeting is about the effective use of email - I think you mentioned that you just started with a new CRM so you might want to swing by - same place - Charlie's Best Bread at 1:30 pm this Thursday. This change was announced - several times, but I take responsibility for any confusion. After I migrated this user base from Google Groups I intended to do more "community development" - online and off, but things kept coming up in both my business and personal life that caused delays - I am sure you can relate. SDIBP is my top priority for this week though, so you may be getting some updates even before the meeting. Hope you and others can make it on Thursday.

REMINDER: Meeting tomorrow for self-employed and independent professionals
Hi Everyone,
A quick reminder that SDIBP (San Diego Independent Business Professionals) will be meeting tomorrow (Thursday, April 18th), 1:30 PM at our usual place: "Charlie's Best Bread" in Pacific Plaza (1808 Garnet between Kendall Street & Lamont Street). This month's presentation will be by Austin Beals, CEO of "Power Up" - an email marketing company. Austin will describe how independent professionals can use the same methods used by big companies to build up their self-employed practice. The one thing we have in common is using email to communicate with customers and prospects, so anything we can learn to be better at it is bound to help. Please consider joining us if we haven't seen you in a while - or even if we have. Take a little break from your computer screen or whatever work you are doing and meet or reconnect with other self-employed folks and maybe learn something new. Hope to see you there. Rob

Hi @Alexander Hinojosa - nice to hear from you again! That sounds like a great opportunity. Your request is perfectly appropriate, and welcome here, but for anyone posting topic different from the original topic, please make a new "top-level" post. That way anyone who has questions can ask them on that thread and it won't get buried so easily. Hey @Peter Hologram Hologram Man - great you are going to make it. I think you mentioned you are starting with CRM around the same time I am. I have been spending quite a bit of time cussing at my computer screen lately as I would to get it set up, but I can already see how much more efficient I am getting and think I should have done it a few years ago. Self-Employed Meeting Next Thursday
#meetings
Hi everyone, A reminder that we will be meeting as next Thursday, 1:30 PM at the usual place: Charlie's Best Bread and Coffee on Garnet. This meeting will be led by regular member Wendy --- who is a professional writer and author. She will be leading a discussion about promoting our businesses with writing and presenting her tips on "How to Stand Out in a Noisy World by Writing and Sharing Content". As usual, we will allow for time both before and after the presentation to give us the opportunity for some light networking. This is a good way to take a little break from work, learn something new and meet other self-employed professionals - try to make it if you can. I'd like to take a few minutes at this meeting to give an update on plans for SDIBP (San Diego Independent Business Professionals). We did the transition to this new platform - which is a pretty good technology - but I haven't done nearly as much "community development" as I should (life and business always seems to intervene). As a result, last month's meeting was not well attended even though Austin Beals, CEO of "Power Up" did a fantastic job of presenting his insights into using email to build up a sel-employed practice. I will be giving a recap on that meeting before next Thursday's meeting. Here is a description about next weeks meeting on Meetup and Eventbrite - please feel free to share or invite any of your friends or associates. https://www.meetup.com/sdibp001/events/261301459/ More coming soon - thanks for being a part of this. Rob

Dear Rob,
Just letting you know I really miss the meetings. The last 3 months has been hectic helping a family member and X-companion with heavy medical/personal issues. My project kinda took a back seat (like you say). This as caused me some not so fun stress. Am actually having to spend time mentally away from it all to keep from having it effect my health. Be so glad when this is over.
Hugs Pat Goulart

Connecting with other self-employed professionals
#moderation
Hi everyone, I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I am going to be a bit more "chatty" on this list between now and the SDIBP meeting on Thursday than I have been in the past - and probably beyond that. I want to catch up on the messages people have sent me here and also to bring everyone up to date on efforts to transition this from a neighborhood group to a region-wide association. For now, this is still a perfectly serviceable neighborhood group since most of our members are still in the beach area and meeting people nearby who live or work nearby is always nice so by all means keep coming if that is your primary interest. We have potential beyond that of a neighborhood networking group though. While making new friends in your own neighborhood is great because you can see them much more often, it doesn't make all that much difference if a new business relationship is in another part of town. If you live in the beach area, and you find the perfect business contact who lives in El Cajon - or Carlsbad - or Chula Vista - it is not going to stop you from doing business with that person. No one doubts the benefits of face-to-face communication but since we live in the same region you can still meet from time to time at mutually convenient locations. That is not to mention the potential of remote conferencing technology which just keeps getting better and better. This message is also to remind you that you shouldn't be shy about posting here, but consider using one of the hashtags below. These go right at the end of the subject line in your email message; it may make the message a little "less pretty" but it does help us organize these discussions, and allows anyone who is not interested in that topic to be able to mute it making it less likely that anyone will be getting unwanted messages here. As a reminder, to post a message to this group simply send an email message to sdibp@groups.io and to unsubscribe send an email message to sdibp+unsubscribe@groups.io More soon. Hope to see you on Thursday. Rob

Do you have an email strategy?
While I am getting ready for today's SDIBP meeting I thought I should finally do a recap on the meeting we had last month about forming an email strategy for your business. As you can see from the picture, we didn't exactly pack the place - in fact there was just me and Austin Beals. You know what though - I asked that he give his presentation anyway and it was excellent - I learned a great deal even though I thought I already knew most of what I need to know about email. I have a few theories as to why so few people showed last month - our meeting attendance goes on wild swings from more than 20 - which is at the limits of the venue, to fewer than a half dozen, and it never seems to have that much to do about how I market and get the word out. For now, however, I want to mention on a few things I learned during this meeting even though I can't even begin to do it justice, because it really was an excellent presentation.
Like I said, it was a great presentation and I can't begin to do it justice - that is why you should try to make these meetings if you can. Feel free to use this thread to post your ideas or questions about email. Austin is on this list so perhaps he can weigh in as well. Meanwhile, our next meeting is just a few hours away, and the rain is not giving much encouragement about the turnout, but try to swing by Charlie's Best Bread at 1:30 PM today if you are available. This month's presentation will be given by member Wendy Kitts, a professional writer and author on the topic of: "How to Stand Out in a Noisy World by Writing and Sharing Content". It should be a good meeting and I hope there are more people than me and Wendy this time, but if not I plan to learn as much as I can anyway. As I have said before, when we get a big turnout we can have better networking, but when we have a small turnout we can "go deep" with a discussion with fewer people - so either way we win. Regardless of what happens today, this group will keep going and I have lots of plans I want to share with the group - some at today's meeting and some over the next few weeks on this list. Don't be afraid of the rain though - come out and join us if you can. Rob P.S. Austin, that really was an nice presentation and I may want to have a "do over" sometime in the future. In the mean time you are always welcome to join us at any of our meetings.

Last Thursday's SDIBP meeting about writing/content
#writing
Hi everyone, I meant to get this brief re-cap out earlier but I had a bunch of meetings this week. Last Thursday's SDIBP (San Diego Independent Professionals) meeting at Charlie's Best Bread was really lots of fun. A smaller group again this month - just six of us, but we had a great conversation and Wendy really did a bang up job on the presentation. Let's see - from right to left going around the table:
Like I have always said, our bigger meetings give us more networking opportunities but our smaller ones give us the chance to "go deep" in some of our discussions and get to know each other a bit better. I learned a great deal from this meeting - both from Wendy's presentation and some of the "random" chatter we had were some interesting tips and ideas got passed around. I will be putting greater emphasis on this group this year so you will be hearing more on this list. Thank you all for your continued support and don't forget to join us on the third Thursday of every month - until further notice at our usual place - Charlies Best Bread in PB. Cheers Rob
