TOMORROW: 1:30 PM: The New Reality for Independent Professionals

Hi everyone,

A quick reminder that San Diego Independent Business Professionals is still meeting on the third Thursday of each month. So much has changed - with COVID, social unrest, and AB5 - a law against our very existence, the year 2020 has gotten off to a rough start, to say the least.

I was going to try to find an economist to help us understand the future landscape for independent professionals in the regional economy but I couldn't find one who was qualified and they all disagree anyway. That is why I think it is better that we get together and "compare notes" about our "new reality" - the challenges and opportunities in the new business environment. The agenda for this meeting is not "cast in concrete" but a few things I would like to cover:

1. What will the business environment be like in the future economy? Where can we find the best opportunities?

2. How can we leverage remote work? The entire country has now adapted to working online. Where are the best opportunities for this kind of work, and where are the challenges?

3. What are the workarounds for AB5? By now, I assume you have all heard of his horrific California law that makes many of our activities more difficult or even illegal. I never intended for this group to get involved in politics and I don't want this meeting to be a rant session, but I hope we can share strategies we use to keep business running while this law is on the books.

4. Status update on government programs. Several have been put into place in response to the pandemic including SBA disaster assistance loans and grants, the pandemic unemployment assistance (PUA) program, and the payroll protection plan (PPP). I hope we can share our subjective experience with these programs, as well as identifying other programs - private and public - that may be possible sources of funding in the future.

5. Cooperation and collaboration. How can independent professionals better cooperate and become better interconnected? Are there ways we can help each other? Sometimes our strength and weakness is exactly the same thing. Most of us have been able to create new opportunities from being independent, but sometimes we are too damn independent for our own good. Let's share some pragmatic information about this. What groups and associations are surviving in this new era? What specific help do you need and/or feel you can offer?

6. Maintaining good mental and physical health during difficult times - perhaps the most important topic of all. What has been helping you get through these times? - Share your tips with others, and by all means, let us know if you need help. No guarantee that we will be able to help but we can try.

7. Any other random topics you wish to discuss.

Please try to make this meeting if at all possible. Access information below Hope to see you there.

REMINDER: 1:30 PM TODAY (one hour from now)

This will be starting in less than an hour. I didn't plan this way in advance, so there is no law that says you can't decide at the last minute. This is a "discussion", not a speaker/audience format so your participation is important. We have lots to talk about.

------

THURSDAY 1:30 PM. Town Hall-style meeting to discuss the challenges and opportunities for small business and independent professionals in the changing local economy.

We've got lots to talk about: COVID, AB5, Government programs like the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program, Disaster Relief grants and loans, the economic and political landscape for San Diego in, problems and opportunities from working remotely and more.

This will be an "information sharing" meeting and parts will be recorded - just as they are in our real-world meetings, however, there will be an unrecorded period in the beginning and end of the meeting for "off the record" comments.

Your participation is important - reliable "real world" information is not always easy to get these days so let's learn from each other and help each other when we can.

The attached picture is from back in the day when we had real-world meetings - remember that? Well, let's look on the bright side - all you have to do to join this meeting is to click a link, and you don't have to worry about parking! Hope to see you there.

TODAY 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM - Virtual Co-working for Independent Professionals

Hi Everyone,

Short notice on this but I am hosting a virtual coworking session / open office hour today from 1:30 PM till 3:30 PM - basically just me working and doing my thing, but doing it online.  I have mostly promoted this to the eclectic group of independent professionals throughout California we have been meeting in the AB5 fight.  I will be working on business database research that could be helpful for anyone's business that you might find useful.  Feel free to drop by anytime today between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM and stay as short or as long as you like.

If you can't make it today, please mark your calendar for Thursday at 1:30 PM for our usual SDIBP meeting - we are hanging on to that "Third Thursday" time slot.  This will be a kind of "Town Hall" though it may be a bit ambitious to call it that since only four other people showed up for our last virtual meeting, but I am going to call it that anyway.  The topic of this Thursday meeting will be "Independent Professionals In the Next San Diego Economy" and we have LOTS to talk about.

More on that later and like I said I will be online in about an hour.  Hope to see you at one of these meetings.  Here is the access info for today:

Meeting for AB5 Opponents at 1:30 PM Today

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to invite everyone on this list to a meeting for brainstorming, information sharing and action planning for opponents of AB5 - the law in California that severely restricts independent professionals.  This is a "state-wide" meeting - it is open to anyone in California who is opposed to AB5 and we have met some really fun and interesting people from other parts of the State.  The access links and numbers are below.  Our normal "Third Thursday" meetings for independent professionals in San Diego will resume next Thursday and will be announced shortly, though of course, it will be a while before we get to meet again at Charlies Best Bread.  Hope to see some of you there.

TODAY 1:30 PM: Brainstorming & Information Sharing for opponents of AB5

ATTN: San Diego Independent Professionals

Hi everyone,

I'm sending this out to both our listserv and the Meetup group list so apologies if you're getting this twice since there's overlap on the two lists.

Today at 1:30 PM I will be hosting another meeting for opponents of California AB5 - the recently enacted law that restricts the activities on independent professionals in this State. These meetings will repeat every Monday and Thursday at 1:30 PM and everyone on this list has an open invitation- if you can't make this one, feel free to come to a future meeting. This same access links below should still work.

This is open State-wide, of course, but I do hope more San Diego folks will join us. There are some really creative and passionate people but we have a huge job ahead of us. Everyone is beginning to understand that they should contribute what they do best and help others in the cause when they can. My way of expressing this is that we must:

Empower each other!

My contribution - at least for now, is putting together a "knowledge base" and collaborative writing system about the "movement" that seems to be emerging in the aftermath of AB5. For this, I could use good writers, organizers, community developers, and people good with open source technologies - but ALL skills are needed.

I don't intend to "re-announce" this twice a week so hang onto this message if you can't make today's meeting. I do want to keep SDIBP (San Diego Independent Business Professionals) together and will be planning another virtual meeting for the third Thursday this month so hope you can at least make that.

I must admit, however, that I miss our "real world" meetings. Let's hope "Charlie's Best Bread" is still around when this thing is over and we can meet in person again. Hope everyone is well and hanging in there - please stay in touch.

TODAY 1:30 PM: AB5 Information Sharing Meeting

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to mention that we are meeting twice a week online on Monday and Wednesday at 1:30 PM to discuss AB5 - the law restricting independent contraction in California.   We have a less formal meeting on Friday at the same time but that is more business/social.  I will probably not announce every event to this list but this is an open invitation - if you can't make one, come to another if this topic interests you.  Also, note these meetings are for all of California - not just San Diego, but I would like some San Diego folks to show up.

Our next meeting is in less than an hour if you would like to drop by.  Here are the access and invitation links:

Hello Rob,

San Diegans can now go to the beach as long as they maintain physical distancing and don’t congregate or lay down blankets. Now, we must begin identifying the opportunities to restart San Diego’s economic engine.

The bad news: We can’t be back to “business as usual.”
The good news: We don’t need to.

Tough times create an opportunity for positive change. With municipal revenues in freefall and the effects of COVID-19 still unfolding, the City of San Diego must prepare to operate in new ways and to lead an effort to build an inclusive economic recovery.

On Thursday, I will be holding a virtual news conference on the budget, at which I will outline the incredible opportunities we have to learn from this crisis and view it as a catalyst to re-think how the city delivers services and uses tax dollars more efficiently and with greater accountability for results.

In advance of Thursday’s budget news conference, I also want to invite you to attend two “House Calls” hosted by my Council office this week, which include a few of the experts to whom I am turning to inform my perspective:

Monday, April 27 at 5 pm: Mental Health Checkup

From the homeless to those quarantined at home, our current crisis has compounded the challenges of addressing mental health issues. Please join me and the experts today at 5 pm:

  1. Dr. Suzi Hong, Associate Professor at UCSD,
  2. Dr. David Janowski, Emeritus Professor at UCSD,
  3. Marc Rosenbuerg, Marriage and Family Therapist, and
  4. Dr. Helanne Fronek, Physician Coach, and Professor at UCSD
REGISTER HERE

Wednesday, April 29 at 5:30 pm: Small Business Resilience

Small business is the engine of our local economy. As we begin our economic recovery, we must understand the hurdles small businesses are already facing -- especially those in already disadvantaged communities -- and build the right platforms to overcome those hurdles. Please join me and the experts on Wednesday at 5:30 pm:

  1. Tayde Aburto, President & CEO of Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce
  2. Donna DeBerry, President of San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce
REGISTER HERE

These are undoubtedly tough times. Tougher for some people than others. But if we are smart, and we embrace a new perspective with an eye to making city government more efficient and accountable, we can create opportunities out of crises.

May you and your family be safe, secure, and optimistic.

Let’s go,

Barbara Bry

Working meeting for AB5 opponents today at 1:30 PM #ab5

Hi Everyone,

As a reminder, I am hosting working meetings for #AB5 opponents three times weekly, and the next one is today at 1:30 PM.  This is for anyone opposed to AB5 in California, not just San Diego, but everyone here is invited to participate.  While it is early in our organizing - and there are other efforts underway - I think we need all kinds of skills and professions in this fight.  I am concentrating on a "documentation" effort now so the involvement of any writers in this group is welcome.  Here is the access for today's meeting

Hi Donald,

No worries, I am holding those meetings three times a week.  Monday and Wednesday at 1:30 PM are "brainstorming and planning" meetings, and Friday (today)at 1:30 PM is a shorter and less formal "coffee break" for self-employed professionals.  Again, this is open to all AB5 opponents in California, not just San Diego.  You are welcome to drop by - in less than an hour - to this virtual coffee break, as is anyone on this list.  Here is the access information:

Nonprofits and the CARES Act: Small Business Funding Opportunities and Technical Assistance for Nonprofit Organizations

Tuesday, April 7th - 2:30 - 3:30 PM PST

Dear San Diego Nonprofits,

There is a flood of information coming from all directions regarding access to federal funding for small businesses and nonprofits. At times the volume of information can be overwhelming. We also know that small business technical assistance organizations are flooded with requests and have wait times of several weeks. To help local nonprofits move ahead in the process, The Nonprofit Institute has partnered with the San Diego and Imperial Small Business Development Center (SBDC), with its Brink SBDC to provide pro bono nonprofit specific technical assistance starting next week.

To begin, we are hosting a webinar to discuss how to prepare your application for disaster assistance from the federal government. The presentation will:

·    Review the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) directly from the SBA and the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) from what we know at the time of the webinar, which is loaned from your bank or other lender.

·    Discuss how to access additional technical assistance through The Nonprofit Institute.

By providing nonprofit specific technical assistance, we aim to shorten the wait times to get the information you need to be able to apply. Accuracy in completing forms is crucial, as applications with mistakes will be sent back in the queue - and there is limited funding.

*Congress passed the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) on March 21st and through advocacy by various local and national organizations, nonprofit organizations are considered small business under the CARES Act and able to take advantage of the associated funding opportunities.
