Hi All, You are all lucky. Mine arrived this morning minus the mag and plastic holder. All the postman delivered was the cover sheet with my address. Either was damage in the postal system or it got nicked. Viv IEP

Metal Detector
Andy Sharman G0UWS/M1G
Hi.
Does anyone have access to or know where I can hire a metal detector.?? I need to locate a manhole cover on a rear garden. Unfortunately it’s under decking and a heavy duty anti-weed net, so hoping to detect it so we can home in on the area. Thanks in anticipation Andy Sharman

If, as was suggested, it is interrogation of smart metering, could it be that the

Taking James' advice, I drove right up to the masts and there was no signal. I then drove around the new housing estates that incorporate the masts and also the new roads that immediately borders the west side the A419. No signal. I picked up a weak signal again once I had gone over the A419 bridge in the direction of Highworth.
My conclusions are: 1 The source is not in Blunsdon 2 When Dom had a strong signal when driving up the hill to Blunsdon I believe it to be a signal from further North mirrored back by the hill itself. This would support the two heading given by Marc and Viv. Mike

Re: Direction Finding Experiment - 70cm
Mike (G4HGV)
Dom, I drove through Blunsdon today on errands and found the strongest (but still weak) signal was at the eastern end of High Street. I then carried on up to Ermin Street (the original A419), turned left and ran parallel with the new A419 and so was about 100yds abeam the transmitter towers. This was the LOWEST signal.
Later today I will head down Lady Lane (where the radio station is) and then down Tadpole Lane. I will report back Observations so far shows that the one second pips are not continuous - sometimes just two pips followed by a long delay before restarting. I wondered if the transmission was interrogation of smart meters. I can only find on line the frequencies for the meters themselves.

Re: Direction Finding Experiment - 70cm
Would be interesting to park near the Blunsdon mast and remove your antenna. Or start applying attenuation.

Re: Direction Finding Experiment - 70cm
Mike (G4HGV),
I went for a drive yesterday, before club and as I drove down the 419, out of Swindon, towards Fairford, the signal was S9+60dB (end stop) as I passed the masts on the top of Blunsdon hill. I had my squelch full on and it was still breaking it as I drove past. The signal then declined the further I got down the hill. I then drove the perimeter of RAF Fairford and the signal was no where near as strong. On my return back to Swindon, as I drove up the A419, the signal again reached S9+60dB as I drove up the hill at Blunsdon. Dom, 2E0WHQ

This is what it looks like to MSK144. Time along the top, Waterfall shows frequency distribution and the graph is signal strength. Cheers Graham G4OED

Den, following your suggestion last night I switched on my handie from the heights of Blunsdon. Result is that it is not located here.
I can hear it but only after defeating the squelch.I will go walkabout/drive around later and report back If anyone has a short 70cms beam they can lend me I could do some direction finding from here if it helps Mike G4HGV

1st Post C---- Club Night!
Den (M0ACM)
It was great to see so many Members back again at Club tonight for our first get together.
We were just shy of 30 attending AND (thanks to Phil, Jonathan and Dom) we also had a station on the air! Because of the floor space in the cafeteria area and the way Alex had laid out the tables (lots of thanks to her and the Parish Council team), it felt very spacious and accommodating. A great evening. A great start. Thanks to everyone who came. See you again very soon. 73. Den for SDARC Committee.
