The Program:

Bringing to Light: The Changes in The Tower Lighting World

The FAA compliance rules for your tower’s obstruction lighting continue to be updated as evidenced by the newly released November 2020 circular.  LumenServe℠ will review some key aspects of the regulations that you need to know.  LEDs have been around for many years, however, in the tower lighting world their deployment is creating big changes.  In addition, the traditional practice of procurement, maintenance and monitoring has a new model: Tower Lighting as a Service®.  LumenServe℠ is at the forefront of this new approach to tower lighting, and we will explore its advantages and implications.

Topic: Argus Building Buildout of Michigan Radio Studios

Speaker: Bob Skon, Chief Engineer, Michigan Radio

Location: Online via Zoom (See below for link)

After several decades in the Literature, Science and Arts building on the central campus, the radio stations of the University of Michigan completed their move to an off-campus site, the Argus Building, in 2003. Our speaker, Bob Skon, guided and oversaw the move from the LS&A building to the newly-remodeled historic factory of the Argus Camera Company just west of downtown Ann Arbor.

Michigan Radio is WUOM, 91.7, Ann Arbor/Detroit; WVGR, 104.1, Grand Rapids; WRSX, 91.3, Port Huron; WLNZ, 89.7, Lansing; WFUM, 91.1, Flint

Bob Skon began his radio career when he joined Michigan Radio in 1996 as the weekend morning on air host. Due to his experience in Los Angeles as a recording studio installation and maintenance technician, he began splitting his time with the engineering department, and moved into engineering full time when he accepted the position of Chief Engineer. Bob was instrumental in Michigan Radio’s transition from analog to digital, in the move from their original studios atop the LS&A Building to the current Argus Building facility, and in the building of the new WVGR transmitter facility.

SOCIETY OF MOTION PICTURE AND TELEVISION ENGINEERS

Detroit Section Meeting Notice

November 2021

Date: Monday, November 15, 2021

Time: 11:00 am - 2:00 PM

Topic: OConsortium Technology Tour

Location: WKBD - WWJ-TV Parking Lot, 26905 W. 11 Mile Rd., Southfield

In place of a usual Section meeting this month, we are participating in the Detroit-area stop of the OConsortium Technology tour.

The OConsortium technology tour is a demonstration of the newest ATSC 3.0 technology contained in their Mobile Demonstration Unit and more. It is glass-to-glass showing how this technology can be deployed in broadcast stations and used by first responders. Supporting sponsors including the major standards organizations (SBE, ATSC, SMPTE and AWARN), new and known technology groups (such as Dejero, Panasonic, Aveco, TaTa Communications, QComm/QForce, Persistent Systems, Televese and Riedel) and Sinclair Broadcast Group/One Media Labs.

With ATSC 3.0 NextGen stations being deployed across the country now, it is the time to see what is out there that actually exists and how it can be helpful. Even if you are not a NextGen station, the new technology and how it works in the cloud, securely and quickly is something not to miss.

During the demonstration, Jim Ocon will show you how the technologies work together. The Oconsortium was created to build workflows and connect technologies together to create an advantage or solve a problem for the end user.

The tour vehicle will be parked at WKBD, 26905 W. 11 Mile Rd., Southfield, from 11 am to 2 pm on Monday, November 15. Lunch will be provided at noon and there will be a prize drawing at the conclusion of the event. There is no charge to attend. All SMPTE members, non-members and interested persons are invited. Visit the OConsortium website for tour dates and locations and registration information.

The event organizers have requested that all attendees be vaccinated against Covid-19.

Guests and non-members welcome - No admission charge

ATSC 3.0 Applications in Public and Commercial Television - MAB webinar coming soon

Maynard, Frank J

The following is from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

“ATSC 3.0: Applications in Public and Commercial Television”
Thursday, October 21, 2021 | 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Eastern
with Vincent Curren, Principal at Breakthrough Public Media Consulting, Inc. and Kerry Oslund, VP, Strategy & Business Development, E.W. Scripps

(L-R) Vincent Curren and Kerry Oslund

This webinar will explore the real-world applications being developed in both the public and commercial television worlds with the arrival of ATSC 3.0.

Vincent Curren is helping public media companies navigate today’s dynamic and competitive media world. More concretely, he is working with the Public Media Company to help public television stations leverage the power of ATSC 3.0, the next generation, broadcast television standard.

Kerry Oslund, VP, Strategy & Business Development, E.W. Scripps is responsible for advancing the company’s ATSC 3.0 strategy and other business development efforts. In December 2020, the company’s WMYD-TV (Detroit) became the market’s first ATSC 3.0 station.  The launch is a collaborative effort with cross-town WDIV-TV, owned by Graham Media Group. Detroit provides a unique opportunity for the automotive industry to have an in-market test bed for the new Internet Protocol-based broadcast platform — one that can deliver data to millions of receivers at once.

SMPTE Detroit Section October Meeting Notice

Maynard, Frank J

SOCIETY OF MOTION PICTURE AND TELEVISION ENGINEERS

Detroit Section Meeting Notice

October 2021

Date: Tuesday, October 12, 2021

Time: 7:00 PM

Topic: Tower Site Tour - Michigan, Ohio and Ontario

Speakers: Scott Fybush, Fybush Media

Location: Online via Zoom (See below for connection details)

This month, Scott Fybush, veteran broadcaster and chronicler of broadcast facilities and happenings in the northeast US and across the country, takes us on a virtual tour of broadcast transmission sites around our region that he's visited and documented over the years. Scott has many fascinating stories to tell and pictures to show, and it will be an entertaining and informative evening for anyone interested in broadcast facilities.

SCOTT FYBUSH is editor and publisher of the long-running weekly Northeast Radio Watch, which chronicles broadcast radio and TV in that region of the US and Canada. Scott does news at NPR affiliate WXXI-FM and is Engineer for WDKX-FM, Rochester NY. He is a regular contributor to the public media magazine Current, writing about technical issues, including Public TV and Radio adoption of ATSC 3.0 and HD radio.

A popular feature of Scott’s NERW report is Tower Site of the Week, featuring selections of photos and background about the hundreds of sites he has visited over he years. Many of these are featured in the annual Fybush Media Tower Site Calendar, which quite a few of us have hanging on our walls, attesting to our nerdy addiction to “tower porn” (2022 edition soon available!) Scott has recently presented localized “Tower Site” programs for other SBE and SMPTE groups, and will feature select MI-OH-ONT sites for us. This is a departure from our usual high-tech video nuts and bolts format, but, many of us have roots and interest in the RF and audio side of things. Scott visited Detroit locations in 2016, and joined a group of SMPTE and SBE members and radio fans at Shields for a genuine Detroit-Style Pizza lunch.

Oh, and, Scott and wife Lisa produce and often perform standup comedy at a Rochester NY local club.

No heckling, please.

The meeting will be held online. See below for connection details. If you are not a member of SMPTE or have an additional e-mail address, please join our groups.io group to receive meeting notices and other information from the Detroit Section.

12k footage to view prior to Tuesday's meeting

Maynard, Frank J

Cinematographer John Brawley shot some footage early on with the BMD 12K camera.  His footage and his evaluation can be found at this link:  https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicursaminipro/gallery

We suggest that you watch the footage on your own beforehand, as it will not be nearly as impressive over video conference.

Even on a computer monitor, the video is impressive. You can see what the camera can do, especially the level of detail in the blacks and the overall sharpness and dynamic range. Apologies for the additional email but we wanted to make sure you had a chance to view the footage prior to Tuesday's meeting.
