Project Angel Tree

Archpriest John Whiteford

Dear St. Jonah Church Family,

the Orthodox Christian Prison ministry of Houston is preparing for the 8th Annual Advent Celebration "Angel Tree" for more than 65 children of incarcerated parents who live in our community. OCPM will hold a party for the children with games, gifts and goodies on December 18th from 12-2 pm at the St. Joseph Orthodox Hall.

St. Jonah Orthodox Church gladly participates in this project by providing gift-giving clothing for kids and 7 dozen cookies and 7 dozen cupcakes.

We will collect monetary donations after the Liturgy on Sunday 12th to cover expenses, but you can send in a donation at any time, if you make it for "Project Angel Tree".

Also, if you would like to volunteer on preparing/food serving/cleaning during the celebration on December 18th (any convenient time from 10 am though 3 pm), please talk to Matushka Jennifer Companik or Iryna Chebotko.

Special thanks to Fr. David Companik for the opportunity to serve our community in this celebration

Need more participants to sign up for trapeza (Sunday luncheon) before Sunday school

Matushka Patricia Whiteford

Dear Church family,

Please check your schedule to see if you can help fill in the remaining spots for November and December 2021. The goal is to have each family rotating through the cycle once every quarter.  We need everyone to participate in this, so we don't overburden the same families.

If you cannot financially sponsor trapeza at this time, please consider volunteering to be the clean up crew. You can put your name(s) below the sponsoring families' names each Sunday on the sign up clipboard.

Please read through the detailed outline of the link below which explains how trapeza works and your responsibilities.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions via email or in person.

Matushka Patricia

Something on the Ballot in Texas that is important

Archpriest John Whiteford

There are 8 Constitutional Amendments on the Ballot, and two of them in particular are important in terms of religious freedom.

Proposition 3 would prevent any entity in Texas (city, county, or state) from restricting worship services in any way.

Proposition 6 would allow people who are in long term care to designate "an essential care giver for in-person visitation."  Currently most long term facilities are denying any in person visitations from anyone due to concerns for the corona virus. More than once, this has prevented me from being able to bring communion to or even visit parishioners who were in such facilities. It is cruel to prevent people from having any visitors for months and years on end, and it is especially a violation of human freedom to deny those people the opportunity to receive pastoral visitations.

If you want to read more about what is on the ballot, see:

Hi Father,

This is Thomas Evind and my wife Xenia and I are planning to move to Spring Texas. We should be ready to unload our things at the Pierpont in Spring on October 27.  We would greatly appreciate a volunteer to help us unload as Xenia is pregnant and shouldn’t be lifting.  We request your prayers. If someone is available they can text or call me at:

Looking for Housing

Archpriest John Whiteford

Merilee and Garrett Eidson are in need of temporary emergency housing. They are currently living in a hotel and can stay until the end of October. They are seeking a room rental beginning in November that would last no longer than three to four months while they continue to seek advanced medical care, permanent housing and employment.

They are able to contribute financially and would like to find a mutually beneficial arrangement. They are husband and wife, nonsmokers, with no children or pets. They have no preference for where in the Greater Houston Area they stay and will happily live anywhere our parishioners live.

While Merilee is experiencing physical limitations, the housing does not need to be wheelchair accessible or ADA compliant. She can manage stairs to get to a second story, but would need an elevator for a third story or higher.

If you or anyone you know are interested, please contact Garrett Eidson at:

Babysitting / Visits for the Clines

Jennifer Companik

Dear Parish Family,

To support the Clines after the birth of their daughter Alice, they would like volunteers to visit and spend some time playing with their elder daughter Euphemia.  The best time to visit would be between 3:00 and 6:00pm on Tuesdays or Thursdays. It is fine for moms with children to bring their own children to the visit. If you would be able to have a play visit with them, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0D45AAAA2BA0FD0-visits.
