Record price for Columbia classical tape

Aside from Kind of Blue on reel, this is the highest price I've ever seen for a Columbia 2-track tape. I've never heard it, so I wonder how the sonics are.

That is really funny to see.

I grew up in New York, but have lived in Knoxville for 36 years.

Record price for ZD-17

Michael K

Capitol 2-track ZD-17 Frank Sinatra "Where Are You?" just sold for $338. Seems to be a record price for this title. If you can get a good copy, it's a great sounding tape.

Hi Michael

The auction states the tape resides in Knoxville, but I thought you live in New York...

I'm surprised this wonderful tape hasn't found a home. The performance is impeccable, the sound excellent. Concertapes 4-track tapes easily rival their 2-track counterparts. This one is a duplicate from my personal collection.

I've just listed a Concertapes 4-track tape of Bartok String Quartets 3 and 4. This is a duplicate from my collection, and a great sounding tape and performance of 20th century chamber music.

Hi!
The "noise reduction" is not noise reduction. It's just a high frequency filter like you find on your amp.

Re: Reel To Reel Tapes Released For Consumers

The use of the terms "2 Track" and "4 Track" was an industry marketing strategy when 4-track (or 1/4 track) tapes were introduced in 1959. It was a way to distinguish between the two formats.  I think it was easier for consumers to imagine 4 separate tracks on a tape (i.e. 4-track) than to imagine what a 1/4 track meant.

It should be noted that, in fact, each track on a 2-track tape occupied about 1/3 of the tape width.

Hi :)
Any familiar with the Sony-TC-366 ?

Is this the first reel to reel recorder with "noise reduction" ?
Got one for free :)
The motor run capacitor is marked with 1.5 mfd and 250 V
Can't find a 1.5 mfd
May I use a 2.0 mfd and 250 V ?

Happy if anybody knows...

Have a good one

Reel To Reel Tapes Released For Consumers

Robert A. Rouge`

Technical Note About 1/4" Tape:
Although they were called "Four Track", they were actually "Quarter Track Stereo"
There was "Side 1" and "Side 2".
"Side 1" was tracks 1 and 3.
"Side 2" was tracks 4 and 2.
The left channels 1 and 4 were closest to the edge of the tape

When "Quad Stereo" came out in the Seventies, there were true "Four Track" longitudinal tapes made.

Tested, plays well, with sonics about what you'd expect at 3.75 ips. Box is fair, with split seams.

I own a few 3" BASF reels in original boxes that includes the plastic clip to prevent the tape to unroll from the reel. Also an original 3" Maxell reel in box and an Aiwa 3" empty reel that came with my near mint Aiwa TP-32 player.

The tiny 3" BASF reels, thanks to the "big" center hub, can be playable on big decks.

I show this video +15 years ago (poor quality):

Hi Michael

Wow that bring back memories. Those looks a lot like 8mm movie reels to me.
These BASF 3'' reels have the larger center hub to help the tape from curling up. I have one similar to this in my collection, but I have no idea where it is right now.

This is a 8mm to 8mm Cine reel adapter for Super 8mm to standard 8mm film reels, I suspect they would fit the center of your reels. if you click around you can see the excessive packaging it has :)

This is a 8mm film reel posted under vintage audio equipment.

I suspect you could use a 3D printer to create similar center adapters for use with magnetic tape recorders but some reel decks would have to be adjusted to not pull too hard on the tape, so near the center the pull force it quite strong.

I've put 4 Scotch empty 3" reels for sale on ebay. These were used for 'tape letters' and mini reel recorders. I had a tiny Toshiba recorder in the late 60s that ran on batteries or AC.
