I didn't notice the INLINE designation. I think Bel Canto abandoned the STAGGERED format when it switched from generic boxes to those with title-specific designs.

Its good for such an old tape that it is labeled to be an inline two track tape, and not staggered.

sale of tapes

I'm slowly divesting of tapes I rarely listen to, as well as duplicates in my collection. Here's one Bel Canto 2-track just listed. Retail price of this tape in 1958 was $11.95 ($114 in today's dollars.) According to Bel Canto, it was recorded on an Ampex 350 using 2 Telefunken U-247 microphones, and duplicated 1:1 on an Ampex 3200-C master/slave unit using Scotch 111 1.5 mil acetate base tape.

More tapes will be offered. Click on "See other items" to link to others. The 4-track Concertapes of Bartok is a terrific tape as well ...

Thanks, Mikkel. I've seen the Sonotape listing but not the EMI. I presume John has all the tapes he's listed. Impressive. Have you met him?

I recently sold him one Westminster tape he didn't have. (I made a digital copy of it before I sold it.)

I checked the EMI listing and it looks like he's missing many of those tapes. When I was in London in 1965 the HMV music shop was still selling many of the half-track mono titles, along with a few of the 'Steresonic' titles. They were expensive, but I did buy one. And John's listing doesn't include those sold in the US under the Angel label.

record price for Urania tape

Michael K

Urania tapes are finally being recognized for their exceptional sonic quality: UST 1210 (Buxtehude) just sold on ebay for $338. It's always been a favorite of mine. I bought a copy at E. J. Korvette in 1960 when they were remaindering 2-track reel tapes. Radio Shack also remaindered a small group of Urania tapes at $3.99 each.

These tapes were duplicated in the same facility that ran the Westminster and Vanguard tapes. George S was the quality control technician.

Tape reels

I'm still looking for 10.5 empty tape reels(or they can have junk tape on them to qualify as 'media mail).

Before COVID, I had two sellers lined up. Shipping was crazy with one and the other out of NYC was a good firm deal. Then COVID hit....that seller.'s email is not valid. Hope they didn't succumb to COVID.

In any event, I don't care if they are metal or plastic....in fact, I'm fine with plastic as long as they have the NAB centers. Needing like 50-100 depending on price.

Thanks/Kevin

Mikkel,

The Sound of Jazz
is a great album. I believe it includes the first stereo recording of Billie Holiday - although this track may not be included on the abridged 2-track version. I have the album on vinyl, a mint 6-eye copy.

Just sold for $415. It's the only complete version of Kind of Blue on reel tape. (The 2-track version is an abridged version of the album.) Some think the 4-track actually sounds better.

Hi Michael

I think you are right for classical tapes.
Also I note the amazing fact that one specimen of this release was sold on oct 10. And then another two specimen on oct 12 - the one you found and another where seller accepted best offer.

This tape is a 2-track Columbia jazz tape, also from 1957, which sold for $670. Used but in great shape according to the pictures.

Meanwhile 4-track tapes from the other - and equally scarce - end of the prerecorded reel tape era, hardly a month ago this Born in the U.S.A. tape with Bruce Springsteen sold for $1425 - Mint and sealed.
Even if I had that kind of money to blow I would not buy it, as I would buy to play and not buy just to have.

Aside from Kind of Blue on reel, this is the highest price I've sever seen for a Columbia 2-track tape. I've never heard it, so I wonder how the sonics are.

Capitol 2-track ZD-17 Frank Sinatra "Where Are You?" just sold for $338. Seems to be a record price for this title. If you can get a good copy, it's a great sounding tape.

I'm surprised this wonderful tape hasn't found a home. The performance is impeccable, the sound excellent. Concertapes 4-track tapes easily rival their 2-track counterparts. This one is a duplicate from my personal collection.
