New Cars for the Hiawatha Chi-Mke

DupyRail

MADISON - The Legislature's budget committee will consider buying new passenger train cars Wednesday for Amtrak's Milwaukee-to-Chicago line.

Legislators on the Joint Finance Committee also hope to sign off on their first court settlement under lame-duck laws that have sparked a bitter partisan fight over the powers of Attorney General Josh Kaul.

Officials at the state Department of Transportation want to borrow $13.2 million to help pay for train cars that would replace decades-old rolling stock on Amtrak's Hiawatha line.

In all, the new train cars would cost $39 million, with the federal government picking up $25.7 million of that amount.

Wisconsin taxpayers, rather than Amtrak riders, would be responsible for covering the state's share of the project

The new trains would carry as many as 475 passengers, up from 408. Some trips now have as many as 50 standing passengers, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau.

In the fiscal year that ended in June, the Hiawatha line had a ridership of more than 880,000. That's an increase of 8.7% over the fiscal 2015 level of about 810,000.

The train cars now used on the route are 30 to 40 years old and nearing the end of their useful life. Maintaining the existing trains is costly and purchasing new ones would provide $27.7 million in benefits, according to a cost-benefit analysis conducted by a DOT consultant.

Being on the slow side myself, this came from the 261 web page which runs these cars during the fall plus whatever other trips they have going.  Sometimes its just dumb luck or networking with the "right" people.  There is some CP Rail FB group that has some info on it ( I'm not a member since they went group members only).  The Trains web site could have info on it too, but I usually don't have time to be on it very much.  Don't have time to be on every possible site.  That being said, don't know when the cars will be coming back thru here.  Maybe several weeks?
