I agree. The only time I read anything about railroads in the mass media is when there is a stupendous accident, or more rarely these days, an uproar about a raise in ticket prices for commuters. 
But perhaps that is the nature of the railroad business. Railroads operate quietly in the background carrying mostly freight most economically and reliably day in and day out. Thus they are taken for granted.
In terms of media interest there is nothing remarkable about quiet efficiency. Even the announcement when a railroad purchases new equipment seldom makes the first page of the newspapers. Also it will never appear on radio, television or even the internet as general news of note. 
Such is life.
