Re: Why are we meeting in Bettendorf?
Galen Kannarr <galen.kannarr@...>
Jon,
I'm not sure if anyone has answered your questions yet. Bettendorf is a stop on the outbound route because it is along I-80. It makes a good place to park cars because of Nancy's gracious parents. On the way home, the bus stops again in Bettendorf to drop off those who parked there. As far as packets go, I think you may have registered through Jeff, in which case Jeff has one big packet that includes your stuff. As I understand, you're boarding the bus in Virginia and returning to same. Correct? Meeting/parking plan
Thomas Weaver <tweaver@...>
Jeff, et al,
Do we have a meeting/parking plan for this year? From what I've read we're parking the cars near the Hy-Vee again. Is this correct? I know this is way too early but do we have a proposed time? Van & I will be staying with my ol' Navy buddy again this year. I'll have the cell phone with me and on. The number is 508-560-3337. Looking forward to seeing everyone and actually riding a reasonable this year (if my stomach behaves better than it did last time, that is.) Update on Dub
dmtullar <dmtullar@...>
This morning Dub underwent his corrective shoulder surgery and the operation went extremely well. As you can well imagine, he is heavily sedated and sleeping. Unfortunately, Dub will have to undergo a follow-up surgical procedure in 10 weeks to remove the clamp that is currently holding his clavicle and all the related muscles and tissues together.
Dub has really appreciated all the supportive cards, calls, and e-mails. Thanks from both of us for all your kind thoughts. Misty

Hey Dub,
You wanna tell me you cannot bike across Iowa with a clamped shoulder? you are supposed to pedal with your legs! Get well. We'll miss you and the smelly cigar Misty, Take care of him. According to him he's worth it. Joe K.

Matt-let us know for sure about whether you will be riding Peoria RADPAN bus
Ron K Douglas
Matt and others, let us know, because otherwise we may not stop in
Bettendorf. Paula and I really enjoyed you "weighing in". However, we are somewhat disappointed that Medina was not named as one of the bus drivers. Rudy would likely enjoy having her rather than crotchety Joe Kahn in his lap from Alexandria to the Missouri. Currently we have committed to the bus originating in Peoria the following: Ron Douglas Paula Douglas Jim Williams Jim Vaupel Tim O'Hanlon (1st time RADPANer fm Peoria) Perry Benson (fm Philly) Ken Boeckle(NY Kenny) Mike Coon fm Chicago Dave Boeldt fm Chicago We stillhave open seats for an additonal 4 for the luxury(rested up and ready to start RAGBRAI following great food, real beers(not water beer) and cool bus air). The first 4 to give us a firm commitment get the seats. Ron

Now Jonathan is dropping out. This is the pits, no Tullar's to pick on. Well we will pick on you just the same since you won't be here and it will only be rumor and hearsay. Reminds of my first MS ride with almost with you. Where is Jean? Is she going this year? Send me the spreadsheet and I'll play treasurer for you. Will they all be packaged and on the bus in a boxes and individually packaged by order? Got to support the TEAM Speaking of surgery when is #1 anyway. How are you convalescing to this point pre-surgery mode. Kicked the drug habit? Hope your doing well and as comfortable as possible!

You know, I was thinking about staying home and watching Dub Tullar recover as well. You know, just me and Dub, in the bedroom, a little music, with lights turned down real low.... mmm, mmm, mmm.... Seriously Dubster, I haven't replied since the email regarding your fall, and I'm really really bummed that you won't be there this year. I love you man, like the brother I never wanted. Hearts will be breaking all across Iowa, mostly fellas hearts, that is. I am not a big prayer, so you're not in my prayers, but you are in my dreams (if you catch my drift)... You know, at the post-RAGBRAI RADPAN party Dub is gonna kick my ass. I need to find another target. Let's see... Jeff Dunn is gonna take care of the t-shirts....................yeah, right! You know what that means, it's a t-shirt free-for-all. In fact, is Jeff even going on RAGBRAI this year? I figured Big Blue would be driven by Rudy Bartolous with crotchety Joe Kahn in his lap from Alexandria to the Missouri. He spent more time "neckin'" last year than he spent "bikin'". Hmmmmm.... you know who we haven't heard from lately, what about Kentucky Bourbon Jim Clark, is he going, we need his sarcasm and air conditioning (not necessary in that order). And Scary Perry Benson, we need his side trips, extensive trivia, and photo ops... Hey, it will be good to see the Boners, did Andrea take Steve's last name? Is she Andrea Bassing or Andrea Boner? Either way, no changing the monogram... You know, some one mentioned applying tattoos... that would be Dub, or, or, or, or Mikey Turner from Chicago (you will know him when you see him, he looks like Billy Idol with his head in a vice). Tattoos and stickers, yeah, I'm a 44 year old teenager once again. Have stun gun, will travel. Hey, haven't heard from Aaron Gilman in a while, we call him Errand Gilman on RAGBRAI. When ever we need a beer or a napkin or an ashtray, we just send Errand. He is glad to go get it... For those uninitiated, each night on RAGBRAI has a theme. Monday night is "skanky woman night". The winner brings the skankiest looking female back to the RADPAN camp site. You gotta get to "first base" with her for it to count. In '99 Scott "I can't stop talking" Campbell brought back a cow, as in a Holstein. I heard he hit a "home run" with her. In '00 Dave "Tasmanian" Tyser brought back a pretty skanky woman and was in the throes when he realized "she" was really from "team cross-dresser". Then on Tuesday night, it is "story night". Since Jeff has been on the most RAGBRAI's he tells scintillating stories, like the time in '93 when he got a flat, and in '95 when he broke a spoke, and in '97 when he forgot his rain gear one day. I mean, he has you on the edge of your seat(looking for an escape). I have seen many a healthy rider commit suicide half way thru "story night". Wednesday is "Mensa night". We bring out the heavy hitters for this. This is when GPS Bill Deegan leads us in a game of contact remedial pursuit. We are then blindfolded and given squirt guns loaded with someone else's pee-pee. You get the idea, loads of fun.... then we sit around and pop anti-biotics all night.... Hey, with designated concubine Sara Brenneman off in Sri Lanka or Kuala Lampour and not riding this year, we need more campsite "comfort women". I nominate the Pistol-ette Sisters (I mean, who can forget '99).... And just because I haven't given Paula "cutey-pie" Douglas, or Ron "cutey-pie" Douglas, or Tall Bill "I am too sexy for my shirt" Schabillion, or Ken "yeah, I work for Estee Lauder, so what" Boeckle, Tom "smoke'em if you got'em" Conrad, Julie "Wah Wah" Waugh, Susan "I've got the time if you got the condoms" Bauer, Jim "you sure do have a pretty mouth" Williams, Nancy "Woof Woof" Wolff, Steve "I'm Nancy's boy toy and I have no last name", and last, but certainly not least: Jim "on your left, no, your other left" Vaupel. Of course, we also have Tom "Chicken" Weaver, the Tennessee Two-some of Glynn and David, the Des Moines Duo of Rick and Carl, etc... on and on.... For last three years we have all taken bets on which day GPS Bill will land in the hospital. This year I'm betting Sat, the 20th, yes before the ride even begins, Big Blue pulls up to some Emergency room somewhere and we'll gentlely toss him out on the tarmac.... Anyway, why do we stop in Bettendorf? Because they have great food. And a four star bordello. And because it is there. And because we usually have to go the bathroom around that time. And because there will be anywhere for six to twelve RADPANers standing there by the side of the road.... OK, yes I did break my arm on the MS ride in May. Thank you for all the get well wishes. All two of them(Aaron and Dub). It is healed, and I am waif-like (Winnie could kick my ass)(now that I think about it, she could pretty much kick all of our asses). I'm still riding my butt-slow mountain bike this year, and yes, I will be eating Aaron's dust once again this year, yet strong enough to lead the peloton of RADPAN road bikes on most afternoons. My brother Tim is riding with us again this year. For those of you who remember him, he is sort of a cross between Danny Devito and Dennis Rodman. My youngest brother, Pete(who is the spitting image of Quasi-moto), bailed on us (no surprise), and his stick buddy (John "Sad" Sadowski), well nicely put, John doesn't wear the pants. Tim and I plan to meet Big Blue in Bettendorf on Sat morning, the 20th. We will be staying with relatives in WelfareVillage prior to the ride. Tim will stay afterwards in Iowa, and I will ride Big Blue back to Alexandria (right now I think they will probably tie me to the hood like a deer). By the way, we may take Ron up on his luxury ride offer. To those of you riding Big Blue out from Alexandria, make sure you have your tetanus and rabies shots before you leave (or army issue gas mask). Anyway, looking forward to it, and seeing everybody, the hugs, the french kisses, the wedgies, the slaps, the punches.... I started my training earlier today. Put in 5 miles. It's gonna be a long week. Hugs and hummers. As always, continue to live the life less ordinary... Matt, out (as in out of his mind)... Dub Tullar wrote:

Attention Jeff, Galen and Tall Bill-Print and take on bus
Ron K Douglas
The Peoria chapter of RADPAN will meet up with the "Main" RADPAN team bus
on Sat. July 20 at: Dave's World Truck Stop(exit 112 from Interstate 29) 2650 Iowa Ave North Onawa, IA (712) 423-3283 Main RADPAN Bus originating from Alexander, VA Mapblast estimates 163 miles from Bettendorf to Bondurant-2 hrs and 30 minutes and 180 miles from Tall Bill's to Dave's World in Onawa,-2 hrs and 35 minutes, or total driving time of around 5 hours. My recollection is the stop at Tall Bill's with lunch and some taking showers is at least 2 hours in past years. If this is the case, that would be 7 hours. The RADPAN bus is not likely to maintain the avg speed estimated by Mapblast so I'll add another hour. This means that from the time the RADPAN bus leaves Bettendorf until it arrives in Onawa at Dave's place 8 hours will be required. Sister RADPAN Bus originating from Peoria, IL Mapblast estimates 425 miles from our house in Peoria to Dave's World in Onawa-6 hours . I don't think we will average 70mph as Mapblast estimates and have added 1 1/2 hours for a total of 7 1/2 hours(57 mph avg.) We will not be stopping by Tall Bill's and will meet up for the first time in Onawa, Conclusion Jeff, it looks like we can make this work if you call me at our home number (309) 637-1748 2 hours before you expect to arrive in Bettendorf. The time it will take to put our things on our bus will likely be about the time it will take for you to add the people and their stuff in Bettendorf. If we leave Peoria about the time you are leaving Bettendorf we should meet up at Dave's World in Onawa at about the same time. We must meet some distance out to avoid the RAGBRAI traffic because it would be impossible to try and find our way separately to Sioux Center. I've worked this meeting town out together with Tall Bill. Drive safely and we look forward to seeing all of you at Dave's World. We will have phones with us. Bettendorf, Iowa directons for east Iowa pick-up/drop-off
Nancy Wolff <nwolff@...>
I'm assuming Bettendorf will be the first Iowa pick-up point for Big Blue on route to RAGBRAI. Seems like the Hy-vee grocery store was a good meeting point last year since we have the lot down the street that can be used for parking while everyone if cycling for the week. For those of you that haven't come with RADPAN before, in the past the bus drives through Bettendorf both coming to Iowa and leaving Iowa. I will not be in town to meet the bus, so let me know if you have any concerns about the plan.
FYI, Hy-Vee has a decent cafe were you can get breakfast and wait for the bus to arrive. Written directions follow, but it might not be a bad idea to print off a map using Mapblast or whatever is your favorite mapping tool. From I-80: Take the Middle Road exit and turn left onto Middle Road. Go about 6-7 miles to Devils Glen Road. Hy-Vee (2900 Devils Glen Road) is on the corner of Middle Road and Devils Glen. It would probably be a good idea to park the bus on the northern edge of the lot by the apartment complex. From I-74: Cross the Mississippi River and take the Middle Road exit ( 2nd exit ). Go right onto Middle Road. It is ~2 miles to Devils Glen Road, turn left onto Devils Glen. Hy-Vee (2900 Devils Glen Road) is on the corner of Middle Road and Devils Glen. To park cars from Hy-Vee (about 1/2 mile): Take a left back onto Devils Glen, go 3-4 blocks to Tanglewood. Turn right onto Tanglewood. The 2nd house on the right is 3635 Tanglewood. Park to the left of the big door in front of the red metal building. This is rental property that my Dad owns. Please do not park by the house as someone is currently living there. See everyone soon (in Sioux Center), Nancy
