These links may help with this question.  I also believe that the value of
databases is not just determined by the content provided, but also by the
search features of the platform it is found on as finding content is as
important as the content being available in a database.  Search capabilities
are particularly important in the worlds of evidence based, systematic
reviews and the meta-analysis as the quality and thoroughness of search
results for projects involving these.  Expect many false drops in these
results, but there also seems to be a substantial collection of on topic
sources as well.  The first group of links compares Embase with
Pubmed and the second group adds Web of Science and Scopus to the mix.
There will also be comparisons of PubMed to Medline and Pubmed Central
which may be helpful to some users of this post. Methods sections of
publications that discuss specific topics may also provide clues to
comparative database usefulness in searches for the content shared in
those research studies.

EAST LANSING - Larry Nassar sexually assaulted at least 25 MSU student-athletes, but there were no NCAA violations, the university has told the college athletics governing body.

.

In January, during Nassar's Ingham County sentencing hearing, the NCAA sent Michigan State University a letter regarding potential rules violations related to Nassar's crimes.

.

The university responded on March 22 in a letter from attorney Mike Glazier, of the law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC, to the NCAA's vice president of enforcement. Glazier listed the current ongoing investigations of the university, including those by the Michigan Attorney General's Office, U.S. Congress and the U.S. Department of Education.

.

(Read the letter at the bottom of this story.)

.

"I trust that you will see that the University is in no way attempting to sidestep the issues facing it, and that if the University had any reason to believe the criminal conduct of Nassar also implicated NCAA rules violations, the University would accept responsibility in that area as well," Glazier wrote in the letter, which MSU released on Wednesday.

.

"However, after a thorough and analytic examination of NCAA legislation, and an application of the known facts associated with the Nassar matter to NCAA legislation, the University finds no NCAA rules violations."

.

Glazier said Nassar's criminal conduct was "abhorrent and a violation of every standard of conduct expected of university of employees."

.

The letter recapped a meeting and phone calls involving MSU and NCAA officials that refined the issues the university needed to address in its response. It also stated that the university is committed to NCAA Bylaw 20.9.1.6, which covers the well-being of student athletes including their health and safety, but notes that bylaw is a guide and not subject to enforcement.

House: Alarming Findings in MSU, Nassar Inquiry

Lansing Larry Nassar was able to brazenly abuse women for decades because Michigan State University failed to properly pursue complaints, destroyed vital documents and allowed the disgraced doctor to exploit loopholes in university policies to avoid scrutiny, Michigan House lawmakers said Thursday.

.

A months-long inquiry by the House into how MSU handled accusations of sexual assault by the former gymnastics doctor produced alarming findings that were forwarded to the attorney generals office for further investigation.

.

While some of those findings remain under wraps because of an ongoing criminal investigation, bipartisan committee leaders disclosed several significant findings in a letter to House Speaker Tom Leonard, highlighting failures by MSU.

.

Nassar seems to have spent decades developing his ability to abuse patients without detection by identifying and exploiting loopholes in the policies that governed his professional conduct and patient relationships, wrote lawmakers, describing their review of MSU documents and question responses.

.

Medical records were never kept for many of Nassars treatments, they found. MSU did not have an adequate informed consent policy in place for much of the time he worked there, which Nassar methodically exploited, lawmakers said, and university policies did not require a chaperone to be in the room during sensitive examinations of minors.

.

In some cases, MSU had destroyed patients medical records by the time they reported Nassar to university police, lawmakers said. While the destruction did not violate state law or university policy, such records may have proven useful to at least one of the survivors seeking justice against Nassar.

.

MSU spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said following the inquirys release that MSU will be working with the House on its legislation and shares the joint concern of lawmakers who want to make sure the horrendous abuse that Larry Nassar executed cannot happen again.

.

An attorney for the university answered dozens of questions from lawmakers, which they also released.

.

Miller Canfield attorney Scott Eldridge told lawmakers that the university already has implemented a new privacy and chaperone policy. The universitys 10-year record retention policy exceeds the seven years required by state law, but the health team is conducting a global policy review, and there is potential that the minimum retention time will (be) addressed.

.

The House findings are the result of an extensive inquiry by the Law and Justice Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education. They requested Nassar-related information from MSU on Jan. 25 and received more than 1,500 pages of documents.

Seven current and former health-care providers at Michigan State University are under investigation by the state Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for their actions related to Larry Nassar, the former MSU doctor who molested patients.

.

The seven -- four physicians, two athletic trainers and a clinical psychologist -- have been identified by Nassar victims as people alerted over the years about Nassar's misconduct.

.

Dr. William Strampel, an osteopathic physician who also was dean of MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine and Nassar's former boss. Strampel is now facing criminal charges for failing to enforce rules set specifically for Nassar, including having a chaperone in the room during exams involving "sensitive areas" and getting patient permission before examining or treating those areas.

.

Dr. Jeffrey Kovan, a osteopathic physician at MSU's Sports Medicine Clinic. Kovan was the initial recipient of a complaint by Amanda Thomashow that she was molested by Nassar during a March 2014 appointment at the clinic. Kovan notified his supervisors of the complaint, although Thomashow told MSU Police she felt Kovan wasn't taking it seriously, according to a police report.

.

Dr. Douglas Dietzel, an osteopathic physician who supervised the MSU Sports Medical Clinic at the time of the 2014 complaint. An investigation by MSU's Title IX office cleared Nassar in that incident.

.

Dr. Brooke Lemmen, a former osteopathic physician at the Sports Medicine Clinic. She resigned in 2017 after Strampel reprimanded her for not telling MSU officials that she was aware Nassar stopped volunteering as a team doctor for USA Gymnastics in 2015 because of allegations of sexual misconduct. After Nassar was fired by MSU in 2016 and at his direction, Lemmen also removed boxes of documents from his office, according to a police report.

.

Dr. Gary Stollak, a retired MSU clinic psychologist. One of Nassar's early victims, Kyle Stephens, says that in 2004 when she was age 12, she told Stollak that she had been abused by Nassar over a six-year period. Instead of contacting authorities, she says, Stollak arranged a meeting between Nassar and her parents. Nassar denied the allegations and the parents forced Stephens to apologize. Stollak, who retired in 2010, has said he does not remember the Stephens case and he destroyed his patient records when he retired.

.

Destiny Teachnor-Hauk, a MSU athletic trainer. Tiffany Thomas Lopez, a former MSU softball players who says she was molested by Nassar during treatments for sports injuries in 1999 and 2000, said she complained to Teachnor-Hauk that Nassar's treatments seemed inappropriate.

.

Lianna Hadden, a MSU athletic trainer. Lopez said she also complained to Hadden about Nassar's treatments. Jennifer Rood Bedford, a former MSU volleyball player, says she told Hadden in 2003 that she was uncomfortable about Nassar's treatments, although Bedford said she was not specific about her complaint.

.

MSU colleagues initially defended Nassar, police investigation shows

.

LARA does not comment on pending investigations, said LARA spokesman Pardeep Toor.

.

The agency's investigations are "strictly focused" on whether a license-holder has violated the Michigan public health code, he added.

Family Separation Is Trump's Immigration Policy.
Here's Why He Won't Own It

Domenico Montanaro - 2015

NPR

.

.

President Trump and administration officials are walking a fine line on family separation at the border.

*

They argue they don't like the policy, but that their hands are tied and instead are pointing fingers at Congress to "fix" it.

*

There may be good reason for that the policy (and it is a Trump administration policy, despite the Homeland Security secretary's claims to the contrary) is unpopular.

*

The president on Tuesday called on Congress to come up with a "third option": for the legal authority to detain and promptly remove families together as a unit. This is similar to a practice used during the Obama administration, when some families were detained together. That, too, was criticized, but it is emerging now as a preferred alternative.

*

Some immigrants under Presidents Obama and George W. Bush were released while they awaited adjudication, but that approach is one Trump and conservative critics chafe at, calling it "catch and release." Trump White House officials say that's not an option this president wants to consider since their stated policy is "zero tolerance" for people who cross the border illegally.

*

A hard line on immigration was a fundamental ideological underpinning of Trump's candidacy. Now, the country is seeing the practical implementation of that ideology, especially after a year in which little got done legislatively on immigration. Trump, though, appears to be looking for a way out of the bad optics and bad politics without looking like he's compromising his principles.

*

Putting Republicans in a jam

*

The president huddled with House Republicans Tuesday afternoon. They're considering several bills, but the strings attached, as always, will be what determines if they pass. Hard-liners and the Trump administration want to see what they can get on the president's other immigration priorities. But there's only so much moderates and Democrats are willing to give on this.

*

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he wants a narrow bill that deals strictly with family separation.

*

"In order to fix this problem you can't fix all the problems," he told reporters. "We've wrestled with this issue for a decade."

*

The reality is, you don't need to look very far to see which way the wind is blowing on this issue. Not only is the president declining to take full ownership of the policy, but Democrats see no political reason to capitulate, and that leaves moderate Republicans feeling the most heat. Congressional Republicans, especially those in vulnerable House districts, are the ones who most want this issue off the table quickly.

*

That's why Ohio Rep. Steve Stivers, head of the National Republican Congressional Committee, came out against the policy. He encouraged the Trump administration to "stop needlessly separating children from their parents," he said in a statement on his Facebook page. "If the policy is not changed, I will support other means to stop unnecessary separation of children from their parents."

*

(If you want to see how divided people are on this, just read the comments on Stivers' Facebook post.)

Stivers Statement on Updated Immigration Executive Order

.

Washington, March 6, 2017 | 0 comments

.

My first priority is the safety of the United States, and I am glad this order seeks to better coordinate with agencies to determine if we are receiving enough information from other countries to effectively vet those who are attempting to come into the United States. I continue to support a more permanent solution to our visa vetting process that also ensures we differentiate between our partners in the region and radical Islamic terrorists."

.

The following statement can be attributed to Congressman Steve Stivers (R-OH) regarding the updated immigration executive order:

The six indictments of disgraced doctor Larry Nassar returned last week by a Walker County grand jury accuse him of assaulting gymnasts over a period of almost 20 years at the Karolyi Ranch, according to court records provided Tuesday.

.

The indictments alleging sexual assault of a child were issued Friday by a grand jury in Huntsville, a few miles north of the Sam Houston National Forest ranch owned by longtime coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi, as the latest development in the USA Gymnastics sexual abuse scandal.

Former Elite Gymnast Kamerin Moore Learns To Take Back Her Accomplishments From An Abusive Coach

Kamerin Moore, former elite gymnast and Larry Nassar survivor, posted a video to Youtube this week discussing her struggles with body image after a lifetime spent as a gymnast. Ive had poor body image, I mean, as long as I can remember, she says close to the start. Like since I hit puberty.

*
Its not the first video that Moore has posted. She first came forward as a victim of Nassars abuse last year in another Youtube video, and also talked about her abuse during her victim impact statement during Nassars sentencing in Michigans Ingham County in January. (Moores younger brother, Jacob, is so far the only male Nassar victim to come forward.)

*

Moore says that she hit puberty at 14, when she underwent shoulder surgery for an injury. That was the first time in her life that she was out of the gym for an extended period of time, which enabled her body to start developing as it naturally would have had the process not been delayed by her arduous training. I wasnt big by any means, she explains. I just got bigger.

*

That, for some reason, wasnt acceptable according to my coach, Moore continued. Moore doesnt name her coach in video, but throughout her gymnastics career she was coached by John Geddert, who owned Twistars USA in Michigan. He was close with Nassar and the former doctor used to treat gymnasts in the backroom of the gym on a regular basis. Many Geddert gymnastsincluding world and Olympic champion Jordyn Wieberwere sexually abused by Nassar. Many former Twistars gymnasts have accused Geddert of being emotionally abusive towards them during their competitive gymnastics careers.

*

Moore talks about how Geddert routinely weighed and measured her, disparaging her if she weighed too much and praising her if she lost weight, which she managed to do only through unhealthy means. Moores story, in this respect, sounds like the stories of many other gymnasts who were shamed and pressured by coaches to lose weight. Its a story that has been told at least since Joan Ryans 1995 book Little Girls in Pretty Boxes.

Larry Nassar and USA Gymnastics cover story: 'Can we just say i am sick?'

USA Gymnastics officials agreed to provide what Larry Nassar's attorney called "false excuses" for his absence from major gymnastics events in 2015, rather than disclose to parents and gymnasts that Nassar was under investigation for child sexual abuse.

Emails obtained by IndyStar reveal that on two separate occasions, Nassar and a USA Gymnastics attorney negotiated cover stories first that Nassar was sick and later that he was focusing on his private practice to explain why the longtime team physician was not attending two major events in the run-up to the 2016 Olympics.

In one of the emails, Indianapolis attorney Scott D. Himsel told Nassar his medical techniques were under investigation, and "it is in everyone's best interest" that Nassar not attend a gymnastics event that weekend.

Himsel said USA Gymnastics would tell people Nassar was not attending for "personal reasons."

Nassar replied: "Can we just say that i am sick? That would make more sense to everyone. Would that be ok?"

Himsel agreed to have USA Gymnastics use that story.

Out of Balance: An IndyStar investigation into USA Gymnastics

In later emails part of more than 900 pages of documents reviewed by IndyStar Nassar assured Himsel: "I stayed with the story of that I am nauseated, not feeling well and staying home."

Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University team doctor imprisoned for serial child sexual abuse, has been denied his motion to appeal his sentence.

Theres nothing Ive done that prejudices me on this case, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina told Nassars attorneys in court Friday morning. Your motion is denied.

.

Nassar and his attorneys filed a motion to appeal his sentence last week, claiming that Aquilina, who presided over Nassars first, widely covered sentence hearing in January, was biased against him. Also, he blamed Aquilina for a recent assault he said he endured at the hands of other inmates at the United States Penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona, where he is serving part of his sentence.

.

Aquilina sentenced Nassar to 40 to 175 years in prison on seven counts of child sexual abuse after a weeklong sentencing hearing during which 169 of his victims and victims and family members read powerful impact statements.

.

At this point, justice cannot be served in terms of the appearance of impropriety, Nassars attorney Malaika Ramsey-Heath said. Dr. Nassar has the right to continue this process. This case is not over. It did not end upon conviction. The appellate process must be allowed to take place.

.

Ramsey-Heath pointed to Aquilinas recent appearance at the ESPY Awards, her public support for sexual abuse survivors on her social media accounts and media interviews before the appeal process took place as evidence of her bias against Nassar.

.

Michigans chief deputy attorney general, Laura Moody, argued that Aquilina used strong but appropriate language throughout the January sentence hearing. She added that if Nassar was attacked in prison, its because hes a convicted child molester, not because of anything Aquilina said during sentencing.

Larry Nassar

From Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Nassar

Lawrence Gerard Nassar (born August 16, 1963) is an American convicted serial child molester who was the USA Gymnastics national team doctor and an osteopathic physician at Michigan State University.

Nassar's cumulative criminal acts of sexual assault were the basis of the USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal, in which he was accused of molesting at least 250 young women and 1 young man including a number of well-known Olympic gymnasts, dating as far back as 1992.[1] He has admitted to at least ten of the accusations.

In July 2017, Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. On January 24, 2018, Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in a Michigan state prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of sexual assault of minors.[2][3] On February 5, 2018, he was sentenced to an additional 40 to 125 years in prison after pleading guilty to an additional three counts of sexual assault.[4] His federal and state sentences are to run consecutively, and he is currently serving his federal time at the United States Penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona.[5][3]

<snip>

Sexual assault accusations and convictions

In 2015, USA Gymnastics cut ties with Nassar "after learning of athlete concerns."
In September 2016, The Indianapolis Star revealed that Rachael Denhollander and
another former gymnast had accused Nassar of sex abuse.[14] Michigan State fired
him on September 20; he had been reassigned from clinical and teaching duties
a month earlier.[15]

In February 2017, three former gymnasts—Jeanette Antolin, Jessica Howard and
Jamie Dantzscher
—gave an interview with 60 Minutes in which they said that Nassar
had sexually abused them. The gymnasts also alleged that the "emotionally abusive
environment" at the national team training camps run by Béla and Márta Károlyi at the
Karolyi Ranch
near Huntsville, Texas gave Nassar an opportunity to take advantage of
the gymnasts and made them afraid to speak up about the abuse.[16] Rachael Denhollander,
one of the first women to publicly accuse Nassar,[17] said in court in May 2017 that Nassar
sexually abused her on five doctor's visits in 2000, when she was 15 years old.[18]

Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney, using the #MeToo hashtag on Twitter,
stated that Nassar repeatedly molested her, starting when she was 13 years old and until
she retired from the sport in 2016.[19] Maroney subsequently filed a lawsuit against Nassar,
Michigan State University, the United States Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics.[20]

The lawsuit accused USA Gymnastics of covering up the sexual abuse by paying Maroney
$1.25 million to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Maroney's attorney, John Manly, referred
to Nassar as a "pedophile doctor".[21]

During a 60 Minutes interview, Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman also said that Nassar
had sexually abused her.[22]

Raisman stated that Nassar molested her when she was 15 years old.[23] Gabby Douglas
was criticized by fellow Olympic teammate Simone Biles and others for sending a tweet that
they interpreted as criticizing Raisman and of "victim-shaming",[23] stating that "dressing in
a provocative/sexual way incites the wrong crowd."[24] Douglas later apologized for the tweet,[25]
and said she was also a victim of Nassar's abuse.[26]

Former national team member Maggie Nichols accused Nassar of abusing her. She documented
the ways he "groomed" her by connecting with her on Facebook and complimenting her appearance
on numerous occasions.[27] According to court filings and interviews, it was Nichols and her coach,
Sarah Jantzi, who reported Nassar to USA Gymnastics officials on June 17, 2015, after the coach
overheard Maggie and another gymnast talking about Nassar's behavior.[28] Simone Biles came
forward shortly after with accounts that she too had been sexually abused by Nassar,[29] and
Jordyn Wieber made a statement at Nassar's court sentencing in which she also accused Nassar
of sexually abusing her during her time at USA Gymnastics.[30][31]

In November 2016, Nassar was indicted on state charges of sexual assault of a child from 1998 to 2005;
the crimes allegedly began when the victim was six years old.[32] Ultimately, he was charged with 22
counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with minors: fifteen in Ingham County and seven in
neighboring Eaton County.

The allegations asserted that Nassar had molested seven girls under the guise that he was providing
legitimate medical treatment at his home and at a clinic on the MSU campus.[33]

Nassar was arrested by the FBI in December 2016 after agents found more than 37,000 images of
child pornography and a video of Nassar molesting underage girls.[34] On April 6, 2017,
his medical license was revoked for three years.[35]

On July 11, 2017, Nassar pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography in 2004, possession of
pornographic images of children dating from 2004 to 2016, and tampering with evidence by
destroying and concealing the images. On December 7, 2017, U.S. District Judge Janet T. Neff
sentenced Nassar to 60 years in federal prison.[5] If he survives that sentence, he will be on
supervised release for the rest of his life.[5]

On November 22, 2017, Nassar pleaded guilty in Ingham County Circuit Court to seven counts
of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with minors under the age of sixteen. He admitted
molesting seven girls, three of whom were under the age of thirteen. On November 29,
he pleaded guilty to an additional three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in
Eaton County.[36] As of January 18, 2018, 135 women had accused Nassar of sexual assault
while he worked for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University.[37] During the following
week, the number rose to 150.[38] In a lawsuit that was filed in April 2017, a woman claimed
that Nassar had sexually assaulted her while he was still in medical school in 1992.[1]

On January 24, Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina sentenced Nassar to
40 to 175 years in prison for the sexual assault of minors.[2] Aquillina allowed Nassar's
accusers to present extended victim impact statements and dismissed objections raised to
this move by Nassar.[37] In sentencing, the judge informed Nassar that he had missed numerous
chances to receive treatment for his sexual urges; Nassar had been aware of these urges from
a young age. She added that there were likely dozens of additional victims who had not come
forward. She made it clear that she did not intend for Nassar to ever be free again.[3]

Nassar was practicing without a Texas medical license while he worked at the Karolyi Ranch
in Huntsville. According to gymnast McKayla Maroney, this is the place where Nassar molested
young women for over 15 years. The practice of medicine without a license in Texas
is a third-degree felony, although it is rarely prosecuted.[39]

On January 31, a Michigan judge stated that thus far 265 girls had accused him of sexual
misconduct.[40]

On February 5, Eaton County Circuit Judge Janice Cunningham sentenced Nassar to 40 to 125
years in prison for the three counts of criminal sexual assault to which he had pleaded
in November.[41] Nassar apologized for his years of abuse, saying that the impact his victims'
statements had on him "pales in comparison" to the suffering he inflicted on them. Cunningham
was unmoved, saying that she believed Nassar was still in "denial" about the "devastating impact"
of his crimes.[4]

The Eaton County sentence will run concurrently with the Ingham County sentence. In turn,
Nassar's state sentences will begin upon completion of his federal child pornography sentence;
Neff had ordered that any sentences imposed at state level run consecutively with the federal sentence.[5][3][41]
As a result, Nassar will serve a minimum of 100 years in prison; each individual sentence would
have been enough by itself to all but assure that he will die in prison.[4]

Nassar, Federal Bureau of Prisons Register #21504-040, was transferred to United States Penitentiary
in Tucson, Arizona in February 2018.[42] Earlier, he had been transferred from a Michigan county jail
to the federal detention center at FCI Milan near Milan, Michigan. His earliest possible release from
federal custody will be March 23, 2069, by which time he would be 105 years old.

Sincerely,

Aly Raisman Opens Up About Sexual Abuse

She says Nassar often closed his eyes and would be out of breath while working on her. Unaware that she was being molested, and still believing she was receiving medical treatment that would help her, she attributed his behavior to his being tired or jetlagged from the trips to competitions around the world.

.

Now Raisman says she knows better. I know people will say Why didnt she tell her mom? Why didnt she say anything? But those questions are unfair, she says. The fact is I didnt really know it was happening to me. What people dont get is that he was a doctor. I would never have imagined that a doctor would abuse me or manipulate me so badly.

.

After years of making excuses for what she calls Nassars weird behavior during the treatment sessions, in July 2015 three years after winning three medals at her first Olympics she says she finally realized that Nassar had been sexually abusing her. Raisman says she received a call from USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny, who asked her to speak to an investigator who would be coming to Raismans home. He wouldnt tell her what the visit was about.

.

She says the investigator, who was hired by USA Gymnastics to address complaints about Nassar, asked if Raisman felt safe, and if anyone had been making her feel uncomfortable. Then she asked specifically about Nassar, about what he did, how he treated her, how many times, and whether other people were present during the treatment sessions. At first Raisman continued to make excuses for Nassar, admitting that she often felt uncomfortable but also adding that he was a doctor, and didnt mean to make her uncomfortable, and frequently brought her and the other girls gifts.

.

When the investigator left, Raisman thought back on her encounters with Nassar and realized that the treatments had not been medical in nature but that she had been sexually abused. She declined to go into detail about the nature of the abuse. When Raisman called USA Gymnastics back the following day and asked to speak to the investigator again, she says she was told that the investigation was ongoing. She also received a text from an official asking her to stop talking about her experiences with Nassar, so as not to jeopardize the investigation. Requests for comment to Pennys attorney were not immediately answered.

.

Raisman says that the culture of success at all costs, and the power that USA Gymnastics wields over the gymnasts and their families vying for coveted Olympic spots, can allow sexual abuse to go unchecked as victims feel that its easier and potentially beneficial to stay quiet.

.

Raisman says she now feels betrayed, by both Nassar, whom she trusted as a doctor, and by USA Gymnastics, whom she trusted not to put her in harms way.

Fort McMurray Area Update May 17, 2016 9 pm Update on the Horse River Wildfire.
Posted on Tue, May 17, 2016 : Alberta Agriculture and Forestry

Update on the Horse River Wildfire (MWF-009) as of 8:00 pm

The wildfire hazard continues to be EXTREME in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Winds today were mainly out of the west, pushing the fire to the southwest edge
of Suncor on the west side of highway 63 and 26 Kilometres south of Fort MacKay.
Smoky conditions have made it challenging to view the southeast portion.
It has made its way to the west side of Gordon Lake and to the southwest corner
of Birch Lake.

Wednesday's forecast indicates another active day of burning with milder winds
and reduced spread. Some precipitation is expected for Thursday and Friday.

2016 Fort McMurray Wildfire FROM Wikipedia

On May 1, 2016, a wildfire began southwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada.
On May 3, it swept through the community, destroying approximately 2,400 homes
and buildings and forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Albertan history.
As of May 17, it continues to spread across northern Alberta, consuming forested
areas and impacting Athabasca oil sands operations. It may become the costliest

The remote Canadian city of Fort McMurray, in the middle of the northern Alberta's Athabasca tar sands (oil deposits that are the site of large-scale natural resource extraction), has found itself at the epicenter of an enormous conflagration. Flames from a still-growing wildfire have caused the complete evacuation of the city (population: 80,000). Video of the evacuation is terrifying, as people escaped in their cars through a fiery landscape as burning embers rained down.

This is a huge fire. As of May 10, the fire had burned around 565,000 acres (around 880 square miles, or 2,300 square kilometers), which is roughly 85% the size of the land area of Rhode Island. It started out simple enough on May 1, when a small fire of unknown origin developed south of the city. By May 3, evacuations were ordered. From May 4 to May 5, the fire exploded from 18,500 acres to 210,000 acres.

The wildfire first pushed north into Fort McMurray, cutting off the main road through town and sending people scurrying north and south of the city to escape. Luckily, over the past several days, the fire turned south and east, to within 30 miles of the Saskatchewan border. According toReuters, the Bank of Montreal estimated insurance losses could be as much as $9 billion Canadian ($7 billion U.S.), easily making this event the costliest in Canada’s history. Signs of the fire have extended beyond northern Alberta, as winds have transported smoke from the fire across Canada and even into the United States.

    How could this happen?

As one would imagine, several fire-friendly atmospheric and ground conditions had to come together to produce such a gargantuan fire. First, drier-than-average conditions dating to last summer have left ample amounts of dry timber as fuel for any developing inferno. Second, the below-average amounts of precipitation later manifested itself as an early snow melt, as rising spring temperatures melted the remaining snow. Third, dry air along with well above-average spring temperatures helped dried out vegetation recently released from winters grip.

In fact, temperatures in Fort McMurray set daily record highs on May 3 and 4, as temperatures reached around 90°F, a temperature usually seen a handful of times a year during the dog days of summer in July and August.  On average, temperatures reach only the upper 50s during this time of year.

Warmer-than-average temperatures (red) dominate across much of central and western Canada, while below-average temperatures (blue) occurred across eastern North America and the southern U.S. Above-average temperatures in northern Alberta helped to dry vegetation and aided in the spread of the wildfire, which devastated parts of Fort McMurray, Canada. Climate.gov image with data from NASA Earth Observations.

The culprit was an atmospheric traffic jam known as an “Omega Block,” which I recently wrote about causing an unusual melt episode for Greenland’s ice sheet. A dome of high pressure allowed warm air to funnel northward into remote northern Canada. And finally, once a spark turned the kindling to fire, strong winds fanned the flames into a monster.

Was this a fluke or a sign of what is to come?

Wildfires across the boreal forests of Canada are not uncommon. Instead, they are a part of the natural pattern of the forest. In northern Canada, cold winters are usually followed by short springs and warm summers, when most fires occur. What makes this event unusual is not only its size but its timing so early in the calendar year.  While wildfires are a natural disturbance, their likelihood can be increased by climate change and climate patterns like El Niño. Winters and early springs across northwestern Canada during El Niño years tend to be warm and dry.

The impact from climate change cannot be disregarded as well.  Natural Resources Canadastates that the annual amount of forest in northwestern boreal areas burned by wildfires has consistently increased over the second half of the 20th century, with some of that increase due to climate change.  Rising temperatures due to the climate change also are more likely to lengthen wildfire seasons across northern North America as snow melts earlier during the spring.

As such, fire-prone conditions are expected to continue to increase in Canada in the future due to climate change. According to Natural Resources Canada, the area burned by the end of this century could be double compared to amounts burned recently. In January, a study published in the journal Climatic Change looked at results from three climate models and three future greenhouse gas emission scenarios and found a future with drier fuels (drier wood, grass, leaves, etc) and a higher frequency of fire weather days for Canada (Flannigan 2016).
