Britain is leaving the European Union, and that's terrible news for the environment as well as anyone who cares about protecting it.

.

The powers-to-be in the U.K. have turned the nation's exit into a platform you might as well call "make environmental destruction for monetary gain great again."

.

In May, George Eustice, Britain's pro-Brexit farming minister, criticized U.K. green directives that protect endangered species and undo damage to Union beaches.

.

Conservationists might call these directives common-sense guidelines to guard against the loss of vulnerable ecosystems. Eustice called them "spirit crushing."

.

Eustice said he'd shutter the birds and habitats directives protecting flora and fauna. Instead, "if we had more flexibility, we could focus our scientists' energies on coming up with new, interesting ways to protect the environment, rather than just producing voluminous documents from Brussels," he said.

.

What's Eustice's alternative idea? A "government-backed insurance scheme" to "incentivize farmers to do positive things for the environment." Details are notably lacking.

.

A liberated Britain would probably omit the European Union's more successful planet-protecting initiatives like the cleaning of British beaches. It'd leave the kingdom open to "new, interesting ways" to neglect everything between the Earth and the atmosphere. Even the bees are at risk thanks to easier, cheaper farming methods.

News Thursday that Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts and the committees ranking Senate Democrat Debbie Stabenow had finally sewn up a deal on nationwide GMO labeling left the food industry celebrating - but GMO labeling backers cursing - a law that will continue to leave consumers largely in the dark about the GMO content of their groceries.

.

snip

.

Senate Ag Democrats quickly took to social media to try to defend the deal, calling it a win for consumers. A prior measure pushed by Roberts, referred to by critics as Deny Americans the Right to Know Act, or the DARK Act, was blocked by Senate Democrats in March.
.

But consumer advocates who were merely days away from seeing the nations first mandatory GMO labeling law implemented - set to take effect in Vermont on July 1 - said the bill was no better than the prior version, and they vowed to do all they could to block its passage.

.

This is not a labeling bill; it is a non-labeling bill, said Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safety, in a statement. We are appalled that our elected officials would support keeping Americans in the dark about what is in our food and even more appalled that they would do it on behalf of Big Chemical and food corporations.

.

The chief objection is that while the bill nullifies Vermonts law, and any other similar state labeling efforts, it also allows companies to avoid the main thing consumers have demanded - a fast and easy way to determine if a food product they are purchasing was made using genetically engineered crops.

.

To appease consumer concerns about GMOs, many national food companies have already started providing simple and clear on-package GMO labeling. But under the law now proposed, food companies could avoid any mention of genetic engineering on their packages and disclose GMO ingredients through digital codes rather than on-package language. Consumers would be directed to scan here for more food information with a smartphone to find information about the food they want to buy. Another option would allow food companies to provide a phone number along with language that states call for more food information.

.

And, while the Vermont law would be nullified immediately, the law gives the U.S. Department of Agricultures Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) two years to finalize a rule laying out the disclosure requirements. Food manufacturers defined as very small would be exempt from the disclosure requirement entirely.

.

The law provides no federal penalties for violations of the labeling requirements. It calls for the USDA to determine the amounts of GMO substance that may be present in food to be considered a bioengineered food. Foods that have meat, poultry, and egg products as main ingredients are exempted.

.

And, some consumer advocates say that a provision setting a definition of genetic engineering, or bioengineering, would be limited to such an extent that some interpretations might mean that foods made with herbicide-tolerant corn and soybeans, the main GMO crops grown in the United States, would not be subject to the labeling requirements.

.

Consumer groups are vowing to blitz members of Congress with demands that they block the law, reminding them that this isnt about politics - its about a consumers fundamental right to make an informed decision about the food they are buying for themselves and their families.

.

Many consumers worry that the genetically engineered crops on the market now carry potential and actual risks for human health and the environment. They worry that because most GMO crops are sprayed with glyphosate herbicide, which the World Health Organization has declared a probable human carcinogen, that GMO foods might contain dangerous levels of that pesticide. And they lack confidence in the regulatory and corporate entities that say those concerns are unsubstantiated even though the regulators require no independent safety testing of genetically engineered crops before they are commercialized for food.

THE GMO LABELING EAGLE HAS LANDED: After months of secret talks that left the ag world pining for the slightest drip of info, the Senate GMO labeling dam finally broke open Thursday when Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts and ranking member Debbie Stabenow unveiled a bill featuring three mandatory disclosure options: an on-package label, a USDA-developed symbol or an electronic code consumers can scan.

.

But that was only the first battle, Pro Ags Catherine Boudreau reports.
Roberts and Stabenow are now hustling to get the 60 votes needed to pass their legislation. Both have said over the last month they wouldnt bring a bill to the floor of the upper chamber unless it had support from a majority of their fellow lawmakers and the agriculture lawmakers are now confident they can get there, Senate sources said. But its already too late for Congress to pass a measure before the Vermont law goes into effect July 1.

.

The House adjourned unexpectedly early Thursday because of Democrats sit-in protest over gun control measures. The lower chamber won't resume business until July 5, which is when those behind the Roberts-Stabenow bill hope a companion measure can be taken up. The path in the House is uncertain. House Ag Committee Chairman Mike Conaway, who backed the voluntary GMO labeling bill that the House passed nearly a year ago, held out on supporting the Roberts-Stabenow bill Thursday, saying he needs time to review it.

.

snip

.

THE LEFT REVOLTS OVER GMO DEAL: The left flank of the pro-labeling camp is not at all happy with the Senate deal, and they're making their discontent known. Sanders condemnation a move that could push the hot-button issue of food labeling into the 2016 presidential debate, despite his sunsetting hope of landing the Democratic nomination was only the tip of the iceberg.

.

Just Label It said in a statement the bill falls short and then tweeted a picture of a labeled product with the hashtag #nodarkact. Activists from U.S. Right to Know, a group that has been using Freedom of Information Act requests to go after industry influence in scientific research, called the bill a sweetheart deal to kill #GMO labeling.

.

Consumers Union Director of Food Policy Jean Halloran railed against the measure: "If this bill is passed by the Senate, it would be a clear case of Congress acting on behalf of industry interests, rather than on those of their constituents. We urge all senators to stand up for consumers and real disclosure and oppose this bill.

.

Vani Hari, the controversial blogger known as "Food Babe," said the bill "screws consumers. She tweeted: Mark my words. Food companies that decide to use QR Codes will be targeted by major online campaigns to shame them."

.

snip

.

FULL BACKING FROM BIG FOOD, AG: More than a dozen groups from the food, biotechnology and agriculture industries endorsed the Senate GMO labeling deal, ranging from the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the Biotechnology Innovation Organization to the National Farmers Union and the National Milk Producers Federation. They said Congress should pass the legislation as soon as possible to set a national labeling standard and avoid uncertainty and chaos in the marketplace.

With the GMO labeling law set to go into effect in Vermont on July 1, Congress scrambles to find a consensus on a compromise national law. If the legislation fails and court challenges are rebuffed, Vermont, which has the smallest population of any state except Wyoming, may end up setting a national standard on a highly contentious issue.

.

Some legislators are fearful labeling, if imposed hastily, could stigmatize many safe and healthy foods. The experience in Brazil, a major GMO growing country with strict labeling laws, suggests there may be a constructive way forward.

.

The Senate has been grappling with trying to write a nationwide GM labeling law for months. In March it failed to advance a bill that would have banned states from creating their own GM labeling laws in favor of measures that would have allowed food companies to voluntarily label their foods. It should be noted that the measure also included a trigger for mandatory labeling in the event the food industry did not adequately participate in voluntarily labeling their genetically engineered ingredients.

.

Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee, has been deep in negotiations with farm state Senators in an attempt to reach a last minute compromise. Senator Stabenow has said her intent is to protect manufacturers from the burdensome maze of requirements that would result from a patchwork of state laws, and to provide consumers with reliable, scientific-based product ingredient information.

.

Republican Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas, the Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, has indicated his willingness to collaborate on a compromise bill that would create federal GMO-labeling standards. He said the failure to reach a compromise could represent a wrecking ball to the entire food industry. We have to get it fixed. Thats the bottom line, and we are running out of time.

.

Vermonts impact on the food industry

.

After several defeats in costly referendums, such as those in California and Oregon, and strenuous lobbying efforts in State legislatures, the GM labeling movement achieved its first major victory in Vermont when the legislature in 2014 passed and the Governor signed a labeling bill that goes into effect on July 1.

.

The law is being challenged by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and three other trade associations that claims it violates the First Amendment, the Fifth Amendment, and the Commerce clause of the Constitution. Plaintiffs also allege the labeling requirements force the manufacturers to make statements they do not want to make, prohibit them from making statements they do want to make, are not rational, discriminate against out-of-state manufacturers, and interfere with the federal food-labeling regulatory regime.

.

The impending Vermont law has already had a significant impact on the food industry. Several major food companies such as such as Campbell Soup, General Mills, Mars, Pepsi Cola, Kelloggs and ConAgra Foods have announced they will begin to label foods that contain GM ingredients. An article in the Minneapolis StarTribune indicated that the food companys willingness to label their GM products was an indication the food lobby may have lost a long, expensive war against mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms and have become resigned to labeling.

.

Asked whether General Mills would now accept a national law that requires mandatory on-package GMO labels, a spokeswoman said, The most important thing at this point is that we set a national standard so that we have certainty moving forward.

.

What blocks a compromise?

.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack who favors mandatory labeling of GMO food, has urged Congress to act to create a national system of GMO labeling. Without such a system, he warned there would be no consistency, no predictability and no stability in labeling regulations and the consumer can be easily confused because everybody might do it slightly different and theres no standard.

.

A major problem undermining efforts to reach a compromise is that the House of Representatives passed a voluntary labeling bill in July 2015. Texas Republican Congressman Mike Conaway, who is the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, indicated he is committed to voluntary labeling and has urged Senator Stabenow to move closer to his position. Any bill that is ultimately reached in the Senate will have to be reconciled with the one passed in the House before it can be voted on by Congress and become law.

WASHINGTON A new weight loss device offers a novel approach to cutting calories: draining them from the stomach before they are fully digested.

.

The AspireAssist system consists of a thin tube implanted in the stomach, connecting to an outside port on the skin of the belly. About 20 minutes after finishing a meal, users connect the port to an external device, which drains some of the recently-consumed food into the toilet.

.

The manufacturer Aspire Bariatrics based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania says its system removes about 30 percent of food stored in the stomach before it begins causing weight gain.

.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the device this week for adults who are obese, with a body mass index of 35 to 55, and have not been able to lose weight with other methods.

.

It's the latest option for millions of obese Americans who have been unable to lose weight via more traditional methods. Obesity is considered one of the nation's leading public health problems because it can trigger diabetes and lead to heart disease and other serious health problems.

.

About 38 percent of all U.S. adults are obese. A 5-foot-9 person would be obese at 203 pounds.

Girls who are obese are more likely to also have asthma than are obese boys. A study recently published in The Journal of Pediatrics gauged the relationship of physical fitness levels and obesity risk to asthma in adolescent boys and girls.

.

The study results pointed to several outcomes that diverged by sex, with obesity associated with greater prevalence of asthma in girls but not in boys, independent of fitness levels. At the same time, higher fitness levels were associated with reduced asthma morbidity in boys but not girls, regardless of weight considerations.

.

The cross sectional assessment, led by Kim D. Lu MD, and colleagues, a pediatric pulmonologist in the Department of Pediatrics, UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange, CA, examined data from the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination survey. The study group comprised of 4828 adolescents between 12-19 years of age.

.

snip

.

None of these associations was found for boys. Overweight/obese girls also showed significantly increased odds of asthma attacks and exercise-related wheezing (while boys did not).

.

Examining the roles of fitness levels, high fitness among boys though not girls - was associated with significantly decreased odds of asthma morbidity.

Have Patience When Dealing with Plantar Fascitis

By Kevin Hassler

.

.

If you have a stabbing pain on the bottom part of your heel when you take your first step out of bed in the morning, you know about plantar fasciitis. The pain usually gets better once your foot gets limbered up, but it may return later in the day when you're exercising ... or maybe when you get up from your chair after a long period of sitting.

.

This type of intermittent heel pain is rarely taken seriously ... except by those who have experienced the pain. The Medscape Reference article on the topic optimistically states that "about 80 percent of plantar fasciitis cases resolve spontaneously by 12 months."

.

But who has the patience to nurse a seemingly minor injury for 12 months?!

.

Unfortunately, that kind of patience is required. Major League baseball slugger Albert Pujols could not afford to be patient. After playing through his misery for 11 years, he ended up having foot surgery and missing an entire season.

.

Plantar fasciitis involves a degenerative irritation of the fibrous band known as the plantar fascia that runs across the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the bones in the mid-foot and toes. Its function is to absorb shock while supporting the arch.

.

Excess demands of running, walking or load carrying, combined with weakness of the arch, can stretch and create small tears in the tissue. The irritated tissues tighten up during sleep, resulting in the pain felt on those first steps in the morning.

.

The condition is particularly common among runners, walkers and aerobic dancers who overdo it or try to rev up their training too fast. Other risk factors include being overweight, having either flat feet or a high arch, pronating (with feet rolling inward), having tight calf muscles and wearing shoes that are worn out or don't fit well.

.

At first, you might feel only mild pain at the heel bone, typically occurring after rather than during exercise. That is the time to start doing something about it. The longer you wait, the longer it will take to go away.

.

Stop doing whatever aggravates the pain and rest the heel. That does not mean to stop working out. You can swim, ride an exercise bike, use a rowing machine or elliptical trainer. Ice the heel several times a day. Switch to shoes that are more suitable for your feet. And stretch regularly, focusing on the calf muscle and the Achilles tendon.

.

The stretching may be the most important part of your treatment. Do it before you get out of bed in the morning and several times during the day.

IMPORTANT:

The article title at the top of this post has an alternative or incorrect spelling for this condition. When I finally paid attention to the corrections in Google for the spelling, I found that corrected spelling for this condtion lead to hughly higher results. Since both had substantial results I used both in the search strategy. A number of experimental Google Domain Limited Web search strategies were used in this post, ones that I have not used before, and the results are interesting.

A five-year-long study has unveiled that making children to work harder so they good marks in schools is not at all healthy for them and may even lead to negative consequences. Researchers said that such children could be more vulnerable to depression and remain anxious.

.

The research carried out on primary school students in Singapore has found that whose [those?] parents showed intrusive behavior, were having too much [many?] expectations from their children to deliver good academic performance and overreacted when the child made a mistake were at increased risk of being overcritical of themselves.

.

Prof. Ryan Hong from the National University of Singapore said that such behavior make children highly critical about themselves. They may feel afraid of making

.

even a single mistake and would blame themselves for not being perfect. Such a behavior known as maladaptive perfectionism is not at all healthy for childrens health.

.

The researchers recruited children aged seven years old from 10 primary schools in Singapore. From each family, the parent who is more familiar with the child was involved in the study. The researchers assessed two sides of maladaptive perfectionism in children- firstly, self-criticalness and secondly, socially prescribed perfectionism.

.

The researchers said that their work demonstrates the link between parental intrusiveness and self-criticalness in young primary school children. To know about parental intrusiveness, the researchers made children play a game and their parents also accompanied them.

.

The game required children to solve puzzles within a restricted time limit and the parent could help the child when he/she felt the need to do so. The researchers wanted to see whether or not the parents intervened with the childs problem-solving attempts.

.

snip

.

It was noticed that both aspects of maladaptive perfectionism were present. Our findings indicate that in a society that emphasizes academic excellence, which is the situation in Singapore, parents may set unrealistically high expectations on their children. As a result, a sizable segment of children may become fearful of making mistakes, said studys lead researcher Hong.

.

Pressure would not help increase childs performance in fact would affect his/her health. Therefore, the researchers have suggested that parents should motivate children rather forcing them to get more grades in school.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Abortion Restrictions In Texas

The Supreme Court has overturned a Texas law requiring clinics that provide abortions to have surgical facilities and doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The law was predicted to close many clinics and further reduce availability of abortion in Texas; the court has ruled the law violated the Constitution.

.

With a 5-3 decision in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, the court reversed a decision by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which had upheld the law. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Chief Justice John Roberts dissented, while Anthony Kennedy joined the liberal justices in the majority.

.

snip

.

"First, it requires that all doctors who perform abortions have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of where the abortion takes place. But because the complication rate from abortions is so minuscule, most abortion providers cannot meet the minimum number of admittances that hospitals require before granting privileges.

.

"Second, the law requires that abortion clinics be retrofitted to meet elaborate statutory hospital-grade standards, including wide corridors, large rooms and other expensive construction and equipment standards that do not apply to all other outpatient facilities where other surgical procedures like liposuction and colonoscopies take place.

.

"The provisions also apply to doctors who prescribe medication-induced abortions; such procedures involve giving the patient two pills and sending her home."

.

The state said the provisions protect women's safety; medical groups such as the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said in a brief that the law would not enhance safety and would in fact impede women's care, Nina reports.

.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the state's law. As Nina reported, the court "said that it did not consider a 300-mile round trip for nearly 1 million women of reproductive age to be a substantial burden because that number was 'nowhere near' a large fraction of the state's 5.4 million women of childbearing age."

.

The Supreme Court rejected that decision, ruling that both provisions constituted an undue burden and are therefore unconstitutional.

.

In the majority opinion, Justice Stephen Breyer writes that the restrictions "vastly increase the obstacles confronting women seeking abortions in Texas without providing any benefit to women's health capable of withstanding any meaningful scrutiny."

U.S. Supreme Court Strikes Down Texas Abortion Rules in Landmark Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday struck down a pair of strict Texas abortion regulations, sparing nearly a dozen clinics in the state from imminent closure and deflating a years-long effort by conservative lawmakers around the country to limit the procedure.

.

The ruling, the nation's most significant clarification of abortion law in a generation, was 5-3, with conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy siding with the court's four liberals against the regulations, which required abortion doctors to obtain admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and clinics to comply with the expensive standards of ambulatory surgical centers.

.

Those regulations, the majority found, were medically unnecessary and too strict for too many abortion providers to meet, forcing closures and thus making it unconstitutionally difficult for women to access the procedure.

.

snip

.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito objected to the ruling on largely technical grounds, leaving Justice Clarence Thomas as the most passionate defender of the regulations.

.

The larger-than-expected victory for abortion rights is expected to reverberate around the country for years to come, especially due to new precedents that seemed to establish the safety of abortion and the need for courts to closely scrutinize legislative claims about the necessity of regulations to protect women's health.

.

Most immediately, similar laws in nearly a dozen other states are likely to be affected by the ruling, making abortion easier to access for tens of millions of women nationwide.

.

"Today women across the nation have had their constitutional rights vindicated," said Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, a New York-based organization that ran the legal challenge to the regulations. "The Supreme Court sent a loud and clear message that politicians cannot use deceptive means to shut down abortion clinics."

.

Texas state officials decried the ruling, saying that an activist court had usurped the power of lawmakers and endangered women.

.

"The decision erodes States' lawmaking authority to safeguard the health and safety of women and subjects more innocent life to being lost," Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement. "Texas' goal is to protect innocent life, while ensuring the highest health and safety standards for women."

.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said the Texas Senate would revisit the issue, adding that lawmakers would have to review the ruling to determine their options.

.

snip

.

On Monday, Davis, who lost a bid for governor after the filibuster, told MSNBC that she was "overjoyed" by the ruling and fought back tears while reading it.

.

"It's incredible news for the women of Texas and the women of the country," she said, predicting it will take several months "to see us rebound to a place where women throughout the state have the access they once had" to abortion clinics.

.

House Bill 2 also banned almost all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and limited the use of the so-called abortion pill. Those provisions were not challenged and remain in place.

Vermonts GMO Labeling Law Is Now In Effect.
Here Are The Labels The Senate Is Trying To Get Rid Of

.

.

Its July 1, 2016, which means that Vermonts controversial rules for labeling certain products containing genetically modified ingredients (GMOs) is now in effect. With both the supermarket industry and agribusiness-backed Senators trying to defeat this law in court and on Capitol Hill, we took a field trip to Vermont this morning to see just what the labels look like in the real world.

.

The final rule [PDF] requires labels on or near various types of packaged and unpackaged foods. It does, however, provide manufacturers with what is effectively a few months grace period, as any packaged, processed foods currently without the label will until the end of the year be presumed to have been produced before the July 1 deadline. So if a Vermont shopper sees a bag of potato chips in December that doesnt have the label, the producer of those chips would not be in violation of the law.

.

That said, we did find a number of products on store shelves that are already in compliance with the rules.

.

There were, as we expected, products from companies like PepsiCos Frito-Lay group that began making this change on a nationwide basis a couple of months in advance of the July 1 deadline.

.

Another company that made the nationwide change earlier this year is Campbell Soup, so we were not surprised to see some labeled Spaghetti-Os. Likewise, General Mills jumped on the labeling wagon months ago, so its Progresso soups are already labeled.

.

snip

.

As mentioned above, the Vermont rule is under attack on both the legal and legislative fronts. Its been two years since a grocery industry trade group sued to stop the labeling law from being enacted, yet the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has yet to issue a decision on the matter, even though it heard oral arguments nearly eight months ago.

.

More recently, theres been a bipartisan effort led by two senators who have received a total of more than $2.1 million from agribusiness donors in just this election cycle to push through new legislation that would:

.

Override the Vermont law and any other state rules on GMO labeling.

.

Eventually in at least two years; likely more create a national standard for labeling that states could not attempt to make more strict at the local level.

.

Create a standard that would not require any disclosure on the affected products. Instead, the disclosure could be nothing more than a barcode, text website link, or phone number.

.

Much like the earlier, failed so-called DARK Act, which would have created a voluntary labeling national labeling standard, this newest piece of legislation was able to skip much of the usual legislative red tape by having Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell present it [PDF] as an amendment to an earlier Senate bill to defund Planned Parenthood (a bill that was originally intended to reauthorize the National Sea Grant College program). The amendment wiped out all the existing text of the previous legislation, including the DARK Act text, leaving only the new GMO labeling bill.

.

The new legislation sailed through its first major procedural test earlier this week, on a vote of 69-28. After the July 4th holiday, its expected that the Senate will take a cloture vote on whether to end debate on the bill; 60 votes would be needed for it to then move on for one final Senate vote.

MONTPELIER, Vt. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders joined other Vermont leaders Friday to celebrate the states newly implemented law requiring labels on genetically modified food and blast proposed federal legislation that could pre-empt the state requirement.

.

Vermont became the first state Friday to require the labeling of food containing GMOs, or genetically modified organisms.

.

Vermont had the courage to say ... If its the right thing to do, what are we waiting for, Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin said to cheers from a rally audience of about 150 people on the Statehouse steps.

.

Vermont Sen. Sanders sharply criticized the compromise bill in Congress that called for less stringent regulations, and said the bill has several shortcomings. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill next week.

.

The federal legislation would allow an electronic code on a package to stand in for a label, requiring a smartphone and internet connection for a consumer to know whether the product contained genetically modified ingredients, Sanders said. Many products, including corn products, beet sugar and soy oils that are in many processed foods, could be exempt from the requirement, he added.

.

Perhaps most shockingly and what exposes the partial nature of this legislation, this bill imposes no penalties whatsoever for violating the labeling requirement, making the legislation essentially meaningless, Sanders said.

.

Vermonts law imposes a penalty of $1,000 per day per genetically modified product that is not labeled as required.

.

At the Hunger Mountain Co-op in Montpelier, which specializes in natural foods and local products, general manager Kari Bradley said it was frustrating that a state law the cooperative has supported since its inception in the legislature might be erased from the books by federal action.

.

He said food co-ops elsewhere in the country cheered them on but their states didnt have the political climate to pass a labeling law. The federal bill is not a solution thats in the spirit of the Vermont law, he said.

What Senate Backers Aren't Saying about the GMO "Compromise" Bill

Last week, Sens. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) announced what they bill as a compromise deal that would label GMO foods across the nation. But the advocacy groups that have fought so long and hard for clear GMO labeling arent cheering: They know the bill is a gift to the agribusiness and biotech industriesnot a compromise. Thats why consumer advocates have dubbed the bill the Denying Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act.

.

Heres what the backers of the bill dont want their constituents to know about the DARK Act:

.

The Bill Is Not a National Labeling Solution.

.

The backers of the Senate bill are portraying this as a big victory for those of us who dont live in Vermont, which passed a GMO labeling law that goes into effect today. (The Senate committees Twitter feed even posted a map showing that their bill would spread Vermont-style labeling across all 50 states.) But this is a misleading claim.

.

The Vermont law is about clear, on-package labeling, but thats not what the Senate is proposing. This bill is not about expanding GMO labeling; its about preventing states like Vermont from taking action. As the bill states, it would "immediately prohibit states or other entities from mandating labels of food or seed that is genetically engineered.

.

snip

.

Additional topics covered in this article:

.

The Bill Does Not Clearly Label GMOs.

The Bill Has No Penalties for Violators.

The Bill Does Not Cover All Genetically Engineered Food Ingredients.

The Bill Benefits Corporations, Not Consumers

The industry has been chomping at the bit to repeal Vermonts law. This bill does that. The industry has long said GMO labels should be voluntary, meaning companies get to decide how much information consumers get. Thats precisely what this bill doesputs all the power in the hands of food companies, while ensuring that consumers are left wondering what is in their food. This bill is no compromiseits a gift to agribusiness and biotechnology companies that have fought popular, state-based labeling initiatives for the past five years.

.

Americans should know thiseven if Senate backers of the bill refuse to say it.

.

Wenonah Hauter is executive director of Food & Water Watch, a national advocacy organization.

On the day Vermonts GMO labeling law went into effect, state political leaders vowed to fight congressional efforts to circumvent the regulations.

Gov. Peter Shumlin, a champion of the legislation, led a rally on the Statehouse lawn featuring the congressional delegation and members of VPIRG, an environmental group.

This is a true David and Goliath story, a small state fighting against Big Food, Big Ag, Big Business, and Big Money in Washington, Shumlin said. We knew when we signed it that wed have challenges, but we set up the Vermont Food Fight Fund and all of us said We will take them on.

Vermont is the first state to require food companies to label products with genetically engineered ingredients. The Grocery Manufacturers Association and others sued the state over the mandate, and there are ongoing efforts in Congress to derail the state labeling mandate, Act 120.

A new Senate bill would require disclosure of genetically modified organisms in food products nationwide through a barcode or QR code, instead of a label. Consumers would need a smartphone with a code reader to determine whether a food has GMO ingredients.

The proposal was roundly criticized by all three members of Vermonts congressional delegation, who vowed to fight the bill.

U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., said the Senate proposal is kind of stupid.

A lot of my colleagues who were against this down in Washington were bragging about how great GMOs were, Welch said. So I said I hear ya, but if its so great what they are why dont you want to brag about it by putting it on the label?

You know what? Welch continued, They didnt have an answer.

Are Fewer Women in Exercise Studies Because of Their Periods?

.

By Cari Nierenberg

Live Science

http://www.livescience.com/54988-fewer-women-in-exercise-research.html

.

.

Women are underrepresented in exercise and sports medicine research when compared to men, a new editorial suggests.

.

One reason may be that women's periods throw things off for exercise researchers: "The complexities of the menstrual cycle are considered major barriers to [women's] inclusion in clinical trials," the authors of the editorial, who are experts in Europe and the United States, wrote in their article, published online today (June 6) in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

.

Research on how the menstrual cycle may affect women's exercise training and performance is lacking, said Georgie Bruinvels, a doctoral student in the division of surgery and interventional science at University College London and the lead author of the editorial.

.

When research is conducted on women who exercise, it is often limited. For example, women are often only tested when they are at a specific phase of the menstrual cycle, typically when hormone levels are low, Bruinvels said. Or, studies may include only women who take birth control pills, and some researchers just completely ignore the possible impact of the menstrual cycle on female study participants in their analysis, she explained.

.

"Women athletes have to compete at all phases of their menstrual cycles, yet currently only a snapshot of time is being researched," Bruinvels told Live Science. More studies are needed to evaluate how the cyclical variations in female reproductive hormones may impact physiological processes and women's athletic performance, she said.

.

For example, women who are ovulating have high levels of estrogen, and this may mean their strength levels are different than they are during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, when they have high levels of both estrogen and progesterone, Bruinvels said.

.

Gender gap

.

An earlier study also found a gender gap in sports medicine research. In that study, researchers looked at exercise studies published in three major sports medicine journals between 2011 and 2013, and found that 39 percent of all of the participants were women, and 61 percent were men, according to the findings published in the European Journal of Sport Science in 2014.

.

The reasons for this gender gap are unclear. Historically, all types of medical research including drug trials were once exclusively done on men because of concerns over potential damage to a woman's reproductive health, Bruinvels said.

A disabled Tennessee teen was trying to make it home to celebrate the end of her brain cancer treatment last year but instead she was bloodied and bruised by Memphis airport security and locked up in jail for a night, a new lawsuit says.

.

Hannah Cohen, 19, was traveling home to Chattanooga, Tenn. on June 30, 2015 after receiving a final round of radiation for a brain tumor at St. Judes hospital when she set off the the metal detector at the Memphis International Airport.

.

TSA agents told Hannah they needed to take her to a sterile area where they could search her, but the disabled teen was confused and tried to get away from the officers, her mother, Shirley Cohen, said.

.

Observing the situation escalate, her mother attempted to explain to the officers that the teen was impaired from radiation treatment, which left her deaf, blind in one eye and partially paralyzed, her familys attorneys said.

.

She is a St. Judes patient and she can get confused Shirley Cohen attempted to tell them, but was restrained. Please be gentle. If I could help her, it will make things better, Cohen tried to say, according to the Guardian.

.

Cohen then watched the unfolding scuffle which left her disoriented daughter wounded.

.

One of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. There was blood everywhere, Cohen told WREG News.

.

Cohen reached for her phone as it came off the securitys conveyor belt, and snapped a photo of Hannahs bloodied face as she cried in anguish.

.

I felt so helpless. I sat down on a bench facing away so I couldnt see what they were doing to my daughter, Cohen told the Guardian.

.

Hannah was cuffed and booked overnight in a Memphis jail instead of flying home and was reunited a day later in the jails parking lot, the suit says.

.

Cohen told the Guardian that her daughter collapsed in her arms and cried, saying Im sorry, Mama.

.

A judge who saw Hannahs injuries the next day tossed the charges against her and refunded the familys $250 in court fees.

19-year-old Hannah Cohen and her mother Shirley are suing the TSA over an incident that occurred about a year ago when the then 18-year-old was beaten by agents while attempting to go through security at Memphis international airport.

.

Hannah and her mother were attempting to fly to Chattanooga for the holidays, a trip Shirley claims they made hundreds of times. Hannah is a patient at St. Judes hospital in Memphis, where she is being treated for a brain tumor. Hannah and Shirley told The Guardian that Hannahs condition left her easily confused and frightened in unfamiliar situations.

.

On June 30, 2015, Hannah set off the alarm on the airport body scanner as she went through security. Her and her mother believe it was because of the sequins on her shirt, which she offered to remove since she had another shirt on underneath. A female TSA agent allegedly laughed at the suggestion. Meanwhile, Shirley, who had already gone through security attempted to inform agents about Hannahs condition.

Family Sues After Disabled Teen Beaten Bloody at Memphis Airport

According to the lawsuit, airport security threw the 19-year-old to the ground after she refused to go back through a metal detector.

Brooke Binkowski

Snopes

.

10. The Plaintiff, Hannah Cohen, is an individual who has a physical and mental impairment that substantially limit one or more of her life activities and has a record of such impairment. She had this physical and mental impairment on June 30, 2015 and before.

.

11. More particularly, the Plaintiff, Hannah Cohen, has damage from radiation and removal of a brain tumor that substantially limits her ability to speak, walk, stand, see, hear, care for herself, learn and work, think, concentrate, and interact with others.

.

12. This substantial limitation on her life activity by the radiation and removal of the brain tumor causes her to be significantly limited in the ability the life activities listed above compared to the manner, duration, and conditions which individuals are able to perform these activities. This substantial limitation is obvious on sight and was obvious on June 30, 2016.

.

When Hannah Cohen went through airport security, she apparently set off the metal detectors. When she was approached by TSA workers, she became disoriented and confused and refused to go through the scanner again.

.

The lawsuit details that her mother tried to intervene, but to no avail:

.

16. The Plaintiff, Shirley Cohen, repeatedly tried to tell the personnel manning the security checkpoint of her daughter's brain tumor and disabilities. However, the personnel at the security checkpoint refused to listen to the Plaintiff, Shirley Cohen, concerning her daughter's disability. They proceeded to assault the Plaintiff, Hannah Cohen, at the checkpoint, causing her physical and emotional injury as well as emotional injury to the Plaintiff, Shirley Cohen as she witnessed the assault on her daughter.

.

Shirley Cohen snapped a photograph of her daughter on the ground before she says she was pushed away by security. Hannah Cohen was arraigned on "various charges," which were later dropped in their entirety:

.

The next morning now two days without their belongings, which had made the flight home the pair appeared before a local judge, who asked the accused to explain herself.

.

When Hannah responded, the judge said: Youre going to have to speak up.

.

Thats when Hannah looked up and her hair fell back from her face, revealing her unseeing eye, surrounded by cuts and contusions.

.

The judges eyes got big and round, Shirley said.

.

After inquiring if the pair were from Memphis, the judge recommended they get legal representation.

Chattanooga mom sues TSA for slamming her disabled daughter's head into the ground

Cohen, who is blind in her left eye and deaf in her left ear, is impaired from radiation and removal of a brain tumor, and is limited in her ability to talk, walk, stand, see and hear. Her mother, Shirley Cohen, says she begged Transportation Security Administration screeners to let her help her disabled daughter through the checkpoint, but she said they called for backup instead.

.

"They were grabbing her from both sides," Shirley Cohen alleged Friday. "One of them slammed her down, hit her head on the cement, and there was blood everywhere."

.

As two agents thrust their knees into her daughter's back and clapped handcuffs around her wrists, another agent grabbed Shirley Cohen and pulled her away from her daughter, she said.

.

Later, in an interrogation room, a TSA agent told her that her daughter had struck one of the agents, and the agency was going to press charges, Cohen said. After a night in the hospital with two guards standing watch outside the door, officers booked her daughter into jail.

.

Though prosecutors eventually dropped the charges and refunded her bail bond, Cohen said that hardly justifies the way her daughter was treated.

.

Though Hannah Cohen is now tumor-free, her run-in with the Memphis screeners shattered her life. The 19-year-old has now graduated from high school and started taking classes at Chattanooga State Community College, but she's since dropped out of school and is taking a semester off.

.

The family lives in Harrison, just north of Chattanooga.

.

"The stress of all this, she wasn't able to continue full-time hours so she lost her scholarship," her mother said.

.

In a lawsuit filed on June 28 that named the TSA and the various agencies that manage the airport as defendants, Cohen asked for damages not to exceed $100,000 for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as negligent infliction of emotional distress.

.

In the lawsuit, Cohen alleges that the TSA didn't provide any reasonable accommodation for screening given Hannah Cohen's disability, and assaulted her in the airport without cause.

.

"They think they are above the law," she said. "The one time they let me go back [into her daughter's hospital room] to take her some food, one of them was grinning at me the whole time, and I was like, 'We'll see.'"

Disabled woman with cancer hurt, arrested by Memphis airport security

The lawsuit says an alarm went off as she and her mother were going through a security checkpoint operated by the Memphis International Airport Police Department and the Transportation Safety Administration. Hannah Cohen became disoriented by the alarm and the security workers attempts to search her, the lawsuit says.

.

The security personnel failed to recognize that she was confused because of her obvious disability and was unable to cooperate with the search, Cohens lawyers, Kelly Pearson and William Hardwick, wrote in the lawsuit.

.

Her mother, Shirley Cohen, said she tried to tell TSA agents about her daughters disability, but she was kept away by police.

.

Shes trying to get away from them but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. There was blood everywhere, Shirley Cohen told WREG-TV.

.

The lawsuit alleges the security personnel assaulted Hannah Cohen at the checkpoint, causing her physical and emotional injury as well as emotional injury to her mother.

.

Hannah Cohen was arrested, but the charges were later dropped. The family filed a federal lawsuit against the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority and the TSA for damages that include pain, medical expenses, personal and emotional injury, and embarrassment.

.

The lawsuit alleges that the TSA and airport police discriminated against Cohen because of her disability and failed to provide reasonable accommodation for screening her. The suit asks for a reasonable sum not exceeding $100,000 and costs.

What brave TSA agents we have. Did they give a medal to the hero who threw the little girl to the ground and busted her head open?

There have been so many outrages committed by TSA personnel over the years that we've become inured to their incompetence and arrogance. What it comes down to is this: the culture in the TSA ecourages a lack of accountability, promotion of managers who deserve to be fired, poor training of agents, and an entitled arrogance from top to bottom.

And the traveling public are the victims.

How to Use the United States Government Agency Section
of the Statistics Resources Research Guide for Statistical Data Sources
for Specific Topic Searches

Finding and using statistical sources is a challenge for most students
and many researchers. Finding government statistical sources are even
more of a befuddlement. Requests for govenment information, let alone
statistics, have dwindled in recent years in live reference situations.
Providing a tool that shows, agency by agency, where government
statistics hide in a group of links to database search results contributes
to statistical literacy and to information literacy for government statistical
sources and to the uses for government statistics.

Even though the actual publications found in these searches are not free, all
of the databases used are. Over fifty government agencies of the United States
federal government are now included and this is a work in progress as is the
entire statistics resource guide. United States government agencies do provide
statistical data for other countries.

Many teachers tell students not to use Google for serious research as I religiously
did until October 2014 when I saw one web address on the MedLib-L discussion
group. I have no idea what the post was about, I just noticed one web address
and as the lesson evolved, I started joining the students rather than trying to
change them in regards to using Google Web Search as part of my database
searching research tool.

+01: ACCESSIBILITY.

Why You Can't Discuss Online Learning Without Discussing Video
Accessibility; But What's Really Required?

By Justin Beck.

"...The Harvard, MIT, and Netflix cases all make it clear that any
public-facing materials must be properly captioned. This is no longer
a nice-to-have: any campus that is not working on getting all of its
public-facing materials captioned to ADA-508 compliance is sitting on
a ticking time bomb. This isn't just a matter of academic materials,
either: schools should be looking at their marketing materials, alumni
relations, and campus news videos as well..."

By Heydon Pickering.

Unlabelled Search Fields

By Jeremy Keith.

"Adam Silver is writing a book on forms-you may be familiar with his
previous book on maintainable CSS. In a recent article (that for some
reason isn't on his blog), he looks at markup patterns for search
forms and advocates that we should always use a label. I agree. But
for some reason, we keep getting handed designs that show unlabelled
search forms..."

The Two Questions We Answer With User Research

By David Travis.

"Fundamentally, all user research answers one of two questions: (a)
Who are our users and what are they trying to do? (b) Can people use
the thing we've designed to solve their problem? You answer the first
question with a field visit and you answer the second question with a
usability test."

Even though some of the nations largest food producers including General Mills, PepsiCo, Campbell Soup, Mars Inc., Bimbo, and Nestle have already updated their packaging to comply with Vermonts new labeling requirement for foods containing genetically modified (GMO) ingredients, these tiny lines of text may be short lived. Last night, the U.S. Senate voted to approve legislation that will not only outlaw Vermonts labeling requirement, but eventually (maybe) replace these text labels with something as obscure as a barcode.

.

The bill, which had already skated through an important procedural vote earlier in the week, was approved yesterday by a vote of 63-30. It now goes to the House of Representatives, which has already agreed to similar legislation. The House could take up this bill as early as next week.

.

The Senate legislation written by Sen. Pat Roberts (KS) and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (MI), who have received a total of more than $2.1 million from agribusiness donors in the current election cycle purports to create a national standard for GMO labeling. However, in order to do so, it explicitly prohibits states and other local governments from enacting their own labeling rules.

.

The law then gives federal regulators at least two years to create this national standard. Given that amount of time, one might expect that the resulting national GMO label must be some sort of black box alert like you see on prescription opioids or cigarettes. Not even close.

.

Rather than the Produced with Genetic Engineering language seen in the Vermont labels, this national label need not even reference GMO content. It can merely provide a URL or just a barcode that suggests a customer to a website for more information.

.

This is not a label; its an obstacle course, said Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley after Wednesdays procedural vote.

.

Additionally, critics of this bill argue that the definitions used in the text of the legislation provide huge loopholes for popular ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, and other oils or sugars from genetically engineered plants.

.

This bill undermines clear labeling, and it blocks state laws in Vermont, Alaska, Maine and Connecticut that are already on the books, says Jean Halloran, director of food policy initiatives for our colleagues at Consumers Union. There are serious questions about potential loopholes in the bill that the Food and Drug Administration says could leave most GMO products exempt from any labeling requirements at all. Nine out of ten consumers support mandatory, on-package labels for GMOs. People have a right to know what theyre eating, and this bill fails to serve consumers interests.
