Obesity is a significant health problem in the United States, affecting close to one-third of all adults. Although genetics can play a role in the likelihood that a person will become obese, the condition occurs when the amount of calories consumed exceeds the amount of calories expended over a long period of time. Excess calories are stored as fat in the body, and with long-term caloric excess, an individual eventually becomes obese. Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet are ways in which to combat obesity.

.

Benefits of Regular Exercise

.

Regular exercise (and proper nutrition) can help reduce body fat as well as protect against chronic diseases associated with obesity. If you are looking for a reason to start an exercise program, listed below are five of the many benefits of regular physical activity.

.

Exercise lowers risk for chronic diseases Concerned about heart disease? Regular exercise is a proven way to decrease risk for these and other chronic diseases. It will help to prevent or manage high blood pressure. It also raises high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, known as the good cholesterol, and lowers low density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol. This combination will decrease the amount of harmful plaques that can buildup on your artery walls and keep blood flowing smoothly. Regular exercise can also help prevent type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers.

Obesity results from energy imbalance: too many calories in, too few calories burned.
A number of factors influence how many calories (or how much “energy”) people burn
each day, among them, age, body size, and genes. But the most variable factor-and the
most easily modified-is the amount of activity people get each day.

.

Keeping active can help people stay at a healthy weight or lose weight. It can also lower
the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and certain
cancers, as well as reduce stress and boost mood. Inactive (sedentary) lifestyles do just
 the opposite.

.

Despite all the health benefits of physical activity, people worldwide are doing less of it-at work,
at home, and as they travel from place to place. Globally, about one in three people gets little,
if any, physical activity. (1) Physical activity levels are declining not only in wealthy countries,
such as the U.S., but also in low- and middle-income countries, such as China. And it’s clear
that this decline in physical activity is a key contributor to the global obesity epidemic, and in
turn, to rising rates of chronic disease everywhere.

.

The World Health Organization, the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, and other
authorities recommend that for good health, adults should get the equivalent of two and a
half hours of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each week. (24) Children should get
even more, at least one hour a day. There’s been some debate among researchers, however,
about just how much activity people need each day to maintain a healthy weight or to help with
weight loss, and the most recent studies suggest that a total of two and a half hours a week is
simply not enough.

Definitions and Measurement

Trends

Worldwide, people are less active today than they were decades ago. While studies find that sports and leisure
activity levels have remained stable or increased slightly, (710) these leisure activities represent only a small
part of daily physical activity. Physical activity associated with work, home, and transportation has declined due
to economic growth, technological advancements, and social changes. (7,8,10,11) Some examples from
different countries:

  • United States. In 1950, 30 percent of Americans worked in high-activity occupations; by 2000, that
proportion had dropped to only 22 percent. Conversely, the percentage of people working in low-activity
occupations rose from about 23 percent to 41 percent. (8) Driving cars increased from 67 percent of all
trips to work in 1960 to 88 percent in 2000, while walking and taking public transit to work decreased. (8)
About 40 percent of U.S. schoolchildren walked or rode their bikes to school in 1969; by 2001, only 13
    percent did so. (12)

  • United Kingdom. Over the past few decades, it’s become more common for U.K. households to own
second cars and labor-saving appliances. (13) Work outside the home has also become less active.
In 2004, about 39 percent of men worked in active jobs, down from 43 percent in 1991-1992. (11)

Diseases & Conditions

Biceps Tendinitis

Biceps tendinitis is an inflammation or irritation of the upper biceps tendon. Also called the long head of the biceps tendon, this strong, cord-like structure connects the biceps muscle to the bones in the shoulder.

.

Pain in the front of the shoulder and weakness are common symptoms of biceps tendinitis. They can often be relieved with rest and medication. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to repair the tendon.
Anatomy

.

Your shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint made up of three bones: your upper arm bone (humerus), your shoulder blade (scapula), and your collarbone (clavicle).
Biceps tendons

.

The biceps tendons attach the biceps muscle to the shoulder bone.

.

Glenoid. The head of your upper arm bone fits into the rounded socket in your shoulder blade. This socket is called the glenoid. The glenoid is lined with soft cartilage called the labrum. This tissue helps the head of the upper arm fit into the shoulder socket.

.

Rotator cuff. A combination of muscles and tendons keeps your arm centered in your shoulder socket. These tissues are called the rotator cuff. They cover the head of your upper arm bone and attach it to your shoulder blade.

.

Biceps tendons. The biceps muscle is in the front of your upper arm. It has two tendons that attach it to bones in the shoulder. The long head attaches to the top of the shoulder socket (glenoid).

.

The short head of the biceps tendon attaches to a bump on the shoulder blade called the coracoid process.
Description

.

Biceps tendinitis is inflammation of the long head of the biceps tendon. In its early stages, the tendon becomes red and swollen. As tendinitis develops, the tendon sheath (covering) can thicken. The tendon itself often thickens or grows larger.

.

The tendon in these late stages is often dark red in color due to the inflammation. Occasionally, the damage to the tendon can result in a tendon tear, and then deformity of the arm (a "Popeye" bulge in the upper arm).

Potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open‑access publishers

This is a list of questionable, scholarly open-access publishers. We recommend that scholars read the available reviews,
assessments and descriptions provided here, and then decide for themselves whether they want to submit articles, serve
as editors or on editorial boards.  In a few cases, non-open access publishers whose practices match those of predatory
publishers have been added to the list as well. The criteria for determining predatory publishers are here.
We hope that tenure and promotion committees can also decide for themselves how importantly or not to rate articles
published in these journals in the context of their own institutional standards and/or geocultural locus.  We emphasize
that journal publishers and journals change in their business and editorial practices over time. This list is kept up-to-date
to the best extent possible but may not reflect sudden, unreported, or unknown enhancements.

PReDAtoRY PUBLiSHeRS By far the most negative effect of scholarly open-access publishing has been the proliferation of “predatory publishers” (Beall, 2012). These are publishers that operate using the gold model, in which authors are charged a fee––the article processing charge—on acceptance of a paper. Unfortunately, many questionable publishing operations have been set up just to earn the fees, publishing many low-quality papers with very little value added to them.

Warning: Your Web Survey is a Lot Less Reliable Than You Think

"Because surveys usually involve hundreds of respondents, many design
teams value the findings from a survey more highly than the results
from small sample usability tests, user interviews and field visits.
But the results of most web surveys are biassed by coverage error and
non-response error. This means surveys, like most qualitative data in
user research, should be triangulated with other sources of data."

.

.

The Federal Demonstration Partnership is a cooperative initiative among 10 federal agencies and 154 institutional
recipients of federal funds for Phase VI. Our Chair and Vice-Chair are Cynthia Hope from the University of Alabama
and Dr. Sandra Schneider from the University of South Florida. The FDP is a program convened by the
Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable of the National Academies. Its purpose is to reduce the
administrative burdens associated with research grants and contracts. The interaction between FDP’s 450 or so
university and federal representatives takes place in FDP’s 3 annual meetings and, more extensively, in the many
collaborative working groups and task forces that meet often by conference calls in order to develop specific work
products.

.

The FDP is a unique forum for individuals from universities and nonprofits to work collaboratively with federal agency
officials to improve the national research enterprise.

.

Mission

.

The Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) is an association of federal agencies, academic research institutions
with administrative, faculty and technical representation, and research policy organizations that work to streamline the
administration of federally sponsored research. FDP members of all sectors cooperate in identifying, testing, and
implementing new, more effective ways of managing the more than $15 Billion in federal research grants. The goal of
improving the productivity of research without compromising its stewardship has benefits for the entire nation.

.

The FDP uniquely offers a forum for individuals from universities and nonprofits to work collaboratively with federal
agency officials to improve the national research enterprise. At its regular meetings, faculty and administrators talk
face-to-face with decision-makers from agencies that sponsor and regulate research. They hold spirited, frank
discussions, identify problems, and develop action plans for change. Then – again working jointly – they test the
new ways of doing things in the real world before putting them into effect.

.

These additional topics are discussed in this document.

.

History
Highlights of Phase I and II
Phase III (Federal Demonstration Partnership) 1996-2002
Phase IV (Federal Demonstration Partnership) 2002-2008
Phase V (Federal Demonstration Partnership) 2008-2014
Membership

There are four types of FDP membership: Research Institutions, Emerging Research Institutions, Federal Agencies
and Affiliate Organizations. The solicitation for membership in the Federal Demonstration Partnership Phase VI was
issued on February 18, 2014. FDP Phase VI formally began with an inaugural meeting September 11-12, 2015 in
Washington, DC and will conclude September 30, 2020. No new Institutional Members will be added after the initial
selection, although non-members are welcome to attend meetings. More information on Phase VI activities,
conditions of membership, and membership categories may be found in the original Phase VI solicitation.

Alleged Abuse [Policies for Handling Child Sexual Abuse Cases]

This message is reposted with the permission of the original poster on the PED list.

We had a prosecutor come talk to us about this very issue just this week in a presentation that had social workers, child life specialists, sexual assault nurses, forensic interviewers from Children’s protective services and physicians present and all gave some good info.

.

For our ED, we have a stepwise approach: 1.the patient and parent check in with chief complaint. (Little to no details taken just yet).

.

2. The Social worker is immediately called who then talks to the parent alone and gets the story and history and if the patient is old enough or an adolescent, will get history.

.

3. The case is hotlined accordingly. If an acute injury is suspected or present, the social worker notifies the physician right away.

.

4. The physicians don’t ask any history about the events and does more of a medical screen and past medical history. If bruising or injuries seen on exam, photos are taken that go directly into our child abuse database photos that our Child Abuse specialists look at daily and make recommendations such as “the patient needs a forensic interview to be set up with a child forensic interviewer who specializes in children interviews.” This will often be set up within the next couple of days. We limit the story being told to the social worker only as often as we can.

.

5. If police needs to be called, they come and interview the parent alone and get their own story. We again try to limit them asking the children any questions if possible since they may have a forensic interview set up and the prosecutors can use that interview as part of their case. Parents can be asked as many times as long as everyone quotes things being said by parent and not the child.

.

6. After all the players have all their key info given to them by the social worker or parent, the patient is sent home or admitted accordingly with follow up in the appropriate location.

.

Hope this helps.

Hi can someone please tell me what are the natural ways to avoid dehydration related injuries. Like i have noticed that despite drinking lots of water i tend to get muscle cramps much earlier than my team mates. Moreover, are there pills or drinks which would help me avoid this?Drinking a lot of water and Gatorate does ot seem to work for me, although for some of my friends it tends to be enough.  _._,_._,_

This post came in on the Groups.IO Sport-Med Discussion Group.

This discussion group network is here to provide medical, sports and other information from published news reports, books, journal and trade press articles and links to videos. We cannot practice medicine unless someone in the medical field resides on one of the lists in this group or on the Public Health list.

That being said, the vast difference you experience from water intake when
participating in active exercise and sports from your colleagues may point to a medical problem and should be checked out by appropriate medical practitioners.

In the meantime here are links to database search results about thirst, exercise, and water or electrolyte drinks from several databases to help guide your thinking.

Search Strategy

(thirst OR thirstiness OR dryness OR absorption) AND (exercising OR exercises OR "intense activity" OR "intense exertion" OR "sports participation" OR "sports activities") AND ("water intake" OR electrolytes OR quenching OR satisfying) [Thirst Quenching After Exercise Problems]

Lead Poisoning

Summary

Lead is a metal that occurs naturally in the earth's crust. Lead can be found in all parts of our environment. Much of it comes from human activities such as mining and manufacturing. Lead used to be in paint; older houses may still have lead paint. You could be exposed to lead by

  • Eating food or drinking water that contains lead. Water pipes in older homes may contain lead.
  • Working in a job where lead is used
  • Using lead in a hobby, such as making stained glass or lead-glazed pottery
  • Using folk remedies such as herbs or foods that contain lead

Breathing air, drinking water, eating food, or swallowing or touching dirt that contains lead can cause many health problems. Lead can affect almost every organ and system in your body. In adults, lead can increase blood pressure and cause infertility, nerve disorders, and muscle and joint pain. It can also make you irritable and affect your ability to concentrate and remember.

Lead is especially dangerous for children. A child who swallows large amounts of lead may develop anemia, severe stomachache, muscle weakness, and brain damage. Even at low levels, lead can affect a child's mental and physical growth.

Lead poisoning

From Wikipedia

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC twenty four seven. Saving Lives, Protecting People

Lead

Today at least 4 million households have children living in them that are being exposed to high levels of lead. There are approximately half a million U.S. children ages 1-5 with blood lead levels above 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL), the reference level at which CDC recommends public health actions be initiated.

No safe blood lead level in children has been identified. Lead exposure can affect nearly every system in the body. Because lead exposure often occurs with no obvious symptoms, it frequently goes unrecognized. CDC’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program is committed to the Healthy People 2020goals of eliminating blood lead levels ≥ 10 µg/dL and differences in average risk based on race and social class as public health concerns. The program is part of the National Center for Environmental Health's Division of Emergency and Environmental Health Services.

Lead poisoning and health

Fact sheet
Updated August 2017

Health effects of lead poisoning on children

Lead can have serious consequences for the health of children. At high levels of exposure, lead attacks the brain and central nervous system to cause coma, convulsions and even death. Children who survive severe lead poisoning may be left with mental retardation and behavioural disorders. At lower levels of exposure that cause no obvious symptoms, and that previously were considered safe, lead is now known to produce a spectrum of injury across multiple body systems. In particular lead can affect children’s brain development resulting in reduced intelligence quotient (IQ), behavioural changes such as reduced attention span and increased antisocial behaviour, and reduced educational attainment. Lead exposure also causes anaemia, hypertension, renal impairment, immunotoxicity and toxicity to the reproductive organs. The neurological and behavioural effects of lead are believed to be irreversible.

There is no known safe blood lead concentration. But it is known that, as lead exposure increases, the range and severity of symptoms and effects also increases. Even blood lead concentrations as low as 5 µg/dL, once thought to be a “safe level”, may be associated with decreased intelligence in children, behavioural difficulties, and learning problems.

Encouragingly, the successful phasing out of leaded gasoline in most countries, together with other lead control measures, has resulted in a significant decline in population-level blood lead concentrations. There are now only 3 countries that continue to use leaded fuel(1).

Freddie Gray’s life a study on the effects of lead paint on poor blacks

Washington Post

By Terrence McCoy April 29, 2015

https://tinyurl.com/yaruw4vy

When Gray lived here between 1992 and 1996, paint chips flaked off the walls and littered the hardwood floor, according to a 2008 lawsuit filed in Baltimore City Circuit Court. The front windowsills shed white strips of paint.

It was worst in the front room, where Gray bedded down most nights with his mother, he recalled years later in a deposition.

“There was a big hole when you go up the steps,” Gray recalled in 2009. “There was a couple of walls that wasn’t painted all the way, peeled. . . . And like the windows, paint was peeling off the windows.”

Before Freddie Gray was injured in police custody last month, before he died and this city was plunged into rioting, his life was defined by failures in the classroom, run-ins with the law and an inability to focus on anything for very long.
Many of those problems began when he was a child and living in this house, according to a 2008 lead-poisoning lawsuit filed by Gray and his siblings against the property owner. The suit resulted in an undisclosed settlement.

Exercise is a vital part of daily life for all people who want to stay fit and healthy. For people with Parkinson's disease, however, it is more than just about staying healthy. For them, the right exercises can improve vital aspects of daily living, such as mobility and maintaining balance.
In this article, we examine why exercise benefits people with Parkinson's disease (PD), and how it affects the brain. We also take a look at some examples and tips for exercising with the condition.

.

Why is exercise good for people with PD?

.

The Parkinson's Foundation say there is growing evidence of the short and long-term benefits of exercise for people with PD.

.

A study, known as the Parkinson's Outcomes Project, by the same organization, found that people with PD who did exercise for at least 2.5 hours a week experienced a slower decline in their mobility and quality of life than others.

.

One of the main benefits of exercise for people with PD is symptom management. This includes improvement of:

.

walking
balance
tremors
flexibility
grip strength
motor coordination
posture
stiffness

Walk 4,000 Steps Every Day To Boost Brain Function

Published Thursday 28 December 2017

.

.

Recent research led by the University of California, Los Angeles shows that taking a short walk each day can help to keep the brain healthy, supporting the overall resilience of cognitive functioning.

.

As we grow older, memory problems can begin to set in. These could be a natural part of aging and a minor annoyance, but in some cases, the issues may indicate mild cognitive impairment and could even develop into dementia.

.

Regardless of how mild or severe these memory problems may be, they are definitely distressing and can affect an individual's quality of life.

.

New research from the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California, Los Angeles suggests that there is a relatively easy way of keeping your brain in top shape as you grow older: take a moderately long walk every day.

.

This could boost your attention, the efficiency with which you process information, and other cognitive skills, say first study author Prabha Siddarth and colleagues.

.

The research findings were recently published the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
