The study describes two different pathway nys or mechanisms by which cognitive impairment occurs in Alzheimer’s vs HIV cognitive impairment suggesting different pathways but similar outcomes. Some think PLWH who develop dementia may develop Alzheimer’s like disease in a different form.

Further, given the differential pattern of deficits in somatosensory cortical function, these measures may function as unique markers of decline in each condition and be useful in identifying PWH who develop Alzheimer’s disease. Future studies should extend these findings to other sensory modalities and consider longitudinal approaches.
