I'm told one of my great-great-grandfathers or ancestor of some strain was mayor of Podhajce at some point in the 19th Century. His name was Samko or Simko Cieglinicki. How can I find more information about him? My dad tells me Simko  negotiated the release of 38 Jews who were held by the Nazis. I'd like to know more about that episode. Thanks.

I am trying to find a birth certificate or any other document that would prove my Grandfather, Meir Marbach, God rest his soul, was a polish

could you help me in my search?

I already found his picture in the Podhajce book (second picture):

We indexed the 1906-10 death records as a teaser to catalyze
contributions. Also available are 1906-08B and 1906,10M as well
as Index pages for 1902-04,06-10B, 1903-10M, 1905-08D. Some of
the index pages are duplicates of the records. We need to raise
$100 to index the B and M records and maybe another $100 to do
the needed Index pages of missing BM and D.
Can you raise this amount?
Best regards,
Mark

The Shul is also well documented in a new book by Gerard Wolfe: The Synagogues of New York's Lower East Side, a Retrospective and Contemporary view. The second edition (Fordham Press) was published in 2013. Pages 132-137 with photos. The book party was at the Tenement Museum.

Full disclosure: I helped on the research as did many others on the Lower East Side:)

The easiest way to contribute is using a VISA or MasterCard online at http://jri-poland.org/support.htm. We thank you in advance for your support.

JRI-Poland deals with vital records and our database includes index entries for records from mainly the AGAD Archive in Warsaw. There are two other sources for vital records. The Ukraine State Archive in Lviv holds some Jewish vital records. These have been microfilmed by the LDS Church and can be viewed at local Family History Centers. See https://familysearch.org/locations/centerlocator. Gesher Galicia has indexed some of these microfilms and has other types of data online at http://search.geshergalicia.org/ including some 1820~70 record indices. The Warsaw civil records office has the new records, those 100 years old or less. These are protected by privacy laws and are not available for research or indexing.

There are also other types of records and these can be identified by searching http://www.rtrfoundation.org/search.php by town name.

A contribution of $75 or more will qualify the donor to receive the Excel file with all the current indices. The Excel file of the index entries can help in two ways. First, you will have access to these entries before they are placed online. We do not place these files online until the cost of indexing is fully recovered through researcher donations. Second, the Excel file allows the researcher to sort and filter the data in ways that cannot be done wit the online database.

Happy New Year.

Subject: [jri-pl] Attention Brzezany, Kozowa, and Podhajce Researchers

Dear Fellow Researchers:

Earlier this year, JRI-Poland restarted our indexing of Jewish vital records
at the AGAD Archive. In anticipation of great demand for the new records
from Brzezany, Kozowa, and Podhajce, we had ordered the indexing of the
following records:
Brzezany - 1905-12 births; 1905-09 deaths
Kozowa - 1903-11 births; 1891-1907 deaths
Podhajce - 1906-08 births; 1906,10 marriages; 1906-10 deaths

This indexing is now complete. However, these indices will not be placed
online for public use until we have raised the funds that have already has
been spent. We need your help. The total cost is $620 for Brzezany, $500 for
Kozowa, and $270 for Podhajce. A donation of any size would be welcomed and
appreciated. However, a contribution to any one of these towns of $75 or
more will qualify the donor to receive the Excel file for that town with all
the current indices. This Excel file will be available to qualified
contributors before the indices are placed online.

The AGAD Archive has told JRI-Poland that images of these records (those
transferred to AGAD between 2007 and 2013) will be placed online in the
first half of 2014. Links to these online images can only be placed online
if we reach the funding goals of $620 for Brzezany, $500 for Kozowa, and
$270 for Podhajce. The JRI-Poland website http://jri-poland.org/support.htm
provides instructions on how to contribute. Be sure to identify your
contribution for "AGAD-Town Name."

Join me in making this project a success and placing the indices online.

A very Happy New Year to all.

Thank you for the video's. I actually found a picture of my great-great grandfather's tombstone in the Podhajce cemetery on jewishgen.org. His name was Hersch Kressel. His granddaughter(my grandma) is still alive at 107yrs old. She was born in NY and visited her grandfather in Podhajce when she was a little girl, around 1910. It was unbelievable that I was able to show my grandma her grandfather's headstone. She told me that Hersch Kressel was a hebrew school teacher.

Thank you for the very moving videos!
Does anyone have any information at all on touring Podhajce and surrounding areas with a guide?  I also had relatives who were from Kozowa and would like to take a trip this coming year.  Can anyone help me?  I tried to contact Alex Dunai but never heard back.
Thank you!
