Test message...

jerome schatten

Greetings Podhajcers...

In the next little while I'll be testing various features available to us -- sending photos, attachments, files and so on.

In order not to fill your inboxes with these attachments, I have chosen to strip the attachments from the distributed emails and collect them in various folders available on the site.

That said, I've never run a Yahoo group before so you may get some things sent inadvertently while I figure out exactly how things work.

If you wish, I can drop you from the mailings temporarily -- just send me a note, and I'll do so. Feel free to experiment if you wish.

Thanks for your forbearance!

This is a test to see how the system strips the attachments. I've
attached a photograph.

Is it possible to receive messages for each day combined into one total message instead of receiving everyone's messages individually? Mal

Re: Receiving messages

Greetings Mal...

Yes it is. After you sign in, click on 'Edit Membership' (near top of the page). Then skip Step 1, cursor down to Step 2 and click on Daily Digest. That's it.

BTW, you're the first person to post other than myself.

I'm not looking for Jewish relatives, but my grandfather was born in 1878 and lived in Podhajce until he came to Canada in 1900. His parents were Paulina and Josef, siblings were Martin, Stephan, Joszef, Maria and Kasha. All contact was lost over the years and I know there are Kozlowski's still living there, I wrote a letter a number of years ago but no answer. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

A bit of family history

Binnie Yeates

My grandfather, Laizer Shapiro, was born, I believe, in Podhajce, in about
1880. I know almost nothing about his family, except that there were 2 more
brothers and a sister - his father owned (or ran?) an orchard, but went blind,
and as all his siblings had left home, my grandfather was left to look after his
father. I know nothing at all about his mother. Eventually, he somehow heard of
a prospective bride in Zborow, Dwojra Leah Brand, daughter of Rabbi Meir Brand,
and left Podhajce to marry her in about 1902 /3. When she became pregnant, they
decided that the best option for their future was in England (they had too
little money to get to the US), so Laizer left in about 1903, arrived in
England, found a room for them, learned to be a tailor's

presser, and sent for his wife and baby daughter, Chana (Annie), my mother, who
arrived here at the end of 1904 or beginning of 1905. I would dearly love to
know more about Podhajce, Zborow, and my grandfather's siblings.

Weintraub & Haber Families from Podhajce

SixtysChic

Objectives: Looking to find info about Lea Haber and her husband Chaim Weintraub. Looking for their parents, grandparents, and siblings. We have good records for their children already.

Additional Info: Searching for...
Name:Lea Haber Weintraub.Birth:Poland.Death:abt. 1937, Poland.
Family Members:Father:Unknown Haber, Mother:Unknown, Spouse:Chaim, Children:Eva , Mollie, Jacob , Golda, Anna, David, Roza

Name:Chaim Weintraub.Birth:1870, Podhajce, Poland.Death:1943, Podhajce, Poland.
Family Members:Father:Unknown Weintraub, Mother: Unknown, Spouse:Lea Haber, Children:Eva , Mollie, Jacob , Golda, Anna, David, Roza

We know Lea was one of 7 and we suspect that 3 of her brothers were Abraham, Morris & Jacob Haber who immigrated to the USA and lived in NY and NJ.

We have Holocaust Testimony for Chaim and his 2 sons.

We know Chaim & Lea had a farm and later Chaim was a ritual slaughterer. We also know Lea's parents had an Inn & small Bar.

The sons were Fireman (according to Holocaust Testimony from David's wife, Yetta Gold)

Visiting

Binnie Yeates

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has experience of visiting Podhajce (and Zborow at the
same time). I'd love to do that, but have no idea what sort of place it is -
e.g. are there places to stay, and any public transport between the two towns. I
don't even know how to get there, from wherever the nearest airport is.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance,

The closest airport is in Lviv, Podhajce located at the distance around 140 km away, Zboriv (actual name) - 100 km. Both towns have around 5-8 thousands of inhabitants now with a few motels.
I know vice-director of local district hospital in Podhajce, that coul be helpful.
Can also suggest to get in touch with one lady from UK, that made trip to Lviv this winter and plans to return back to Buczacz (close to you area of interest) in teh close future.

Hello Binnie,
You need to do a lot of research and hire a guide before you consider going anywhere in the area. A cousin went in the winter--a bad idea--and found once he arrived in Monasteryska that there was one bus a day--the one he had arrived on--and no hotel. JewishGen has had discussions about travel in the past that you might want to check out.

Dear Georgia,

Thank you so much for your reply - it's really helpful. Maybe I should think about going to Zborow instead, and hire a car or something, to go and visit Podhajce.

Best wishes,

Binnie

Yes, indeed there are no hotels in Podhajce, but at least 4 opened in Berezhany (small with 5-10 rooms) See links in Ukrainian with photos
