Date
To all members and interested parties;

Marie Hageman

Greetings,

A few items need to be addressed.

We have several volunteer opportunities to be filled. If everyone pitches in and helps, the few who are trying to do the tasks of several positions won’t be overwhelmed.
The Non-Elected Positions to be filled are:
Greeter -
Programs/Speakers –
Show Table Manager-
Please email or call me if you have any questions or are interested in filling one of these.

On the subject of everyone pitching in, there are several folks who haven’t paid their dues, yet. I’m sure you don’t want me to keep reminding you at every meeting. Those who have paid on time shouldn’t have to hear it.

For the record, the treasury is declining as speakers fees and other expenses rise, while membership declines. Another club in the area is considering drastic measures as they are in an even worse situation. We are OK now, but don’t want to wait until we are in dire straits.

Therefore, the officers have had a meeting and come to these conclusions:

Unpaid dues may be inadvertent. (I, myself, forgot last year, as I missed so many meetings due to my other commitments and the meeting’s cancellations), so we are enclosing the current list.

Membership should have its benefits. Therefore, the officers have agreed that if someone has not paid dues, by the December meeting, their show table points revert to zero, and no further points, nor raffle tickets, can be earned until their membership becomes current. We cannot retroactively add back their lost points.  (Since we just made this decision, we will extend the deadline this year to the January meeting.)

This is a list of the current members of the Pinelands Orchid Society:
1-Bookbinder, Bob & Myrna        Family
2-Cauler, Laura                                Individual
3-Dallman, Elishia                           Individual
4-Davis, Bob & Sherron                 Family
5-Deutsch, Herb & Sharon            Family
6-Dunigan, Michael                        Family
7-Ference, Ron                                Individual
8-Giles, Jeanne                                Individual
9-Gilman, Tom                                 Individual
10-Hageman, Marie                       Individual
11-Horn, Bea & Mike                     Family
12-Jacob, Michael                           Individual
13-Koser, Todd                                Family
13-Masso, Ernie                               Family
14-Nunez, Rosanne                        Individual
15-Quirk, Bill                                    Individual
16-Richards, Carole                        Individual

Pinelands Orchid Society
c/o Mike Horn
107 Lippincott Ave
Riverton, NJ 08077

I’m still working on the Jan meeting. The first Tues is the Holiday, and the second Tues conflicts with 3 other orchid societies, so speakers are booked, so I am trying for the third Tues, but Cadbury hasn’t confirmed availability. Stay tuned.

Thanks for all you do to make our club a success.

Tuesday, Jan 15th
As you know by now, our January meeting must be postponed, as the first Tuesday is New Year’s Day. When we postpone until the second Tuesday, we conflict with three other orchid societies, resulting in unavailability of speakers and some of our members being forced to choose. So to be kind to everyone, we are scheduling our January meeting for the third Tuesday, Jan 15th.
Still working on confirming a speaker, but the availability of the room has been confirmed by Cadbury for the 15th.

Also-
Saturday Feb 9th
Our February meeting will be a field trip to the Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens.

I tried to get us an orchid- specific tour, but they won’t go for it…
“Longwood does not offer custom guided tours on your topic of choice. The only guided tour offered to groups is the Longwood Story Tour: highlights of our diverse gardens while learning about our heritage and how one man's vision turned Longwood into one of the great gardens of the world.”
This is not really a peak-winter activity, so we will tour Longwood on our own.

We need 15 people to get the group rate of $19.00 each. (The regular price is $ 23.00.)
If you’d like to go, send your payment to Mike, see below, or bring it to the January meeting, as I must make the reservation right after our meeting, and payment is required to make our reservation. (If we do not get the minimum 15 signed up, your payment will be refunded.)

The tickets will be for 10 am. (accommodating arrival times from 9:30a - 10:30a). Transportation is on our own so we can each set our own departure time. (Stay for the light show or be home in time for dinner, as you choose.)

Hello Sherron,

I had the flu since Monday and could not make the POS meeting.  I’ve been sick every time the meetings come around.

Hope to catch up with Pinelands at some point in time.

Glad to hear the meeting went well.

Thanks for the email. Always appreciate hearing from you.

PINELANDS ORCHID SOCIETY FEBRUARY MEETING

UPDATE ON LONGWOOD GARDENS MEETING

Hi,  I wanted to give everyone an update on our meeting at Longwood Gardens on 9 February, 2019.  The group that paid for the trip at $19 / head should be aware that we are unlikely to get the group rate with the 15 individuals.  That will make the cost $23/person.  I am hoping that most people can get there by 10 AM.  That will leave time for walking through the conservatory and trying the mushroom soup at the cafeteria.

I have sent a note off to my contact at Longwood.  I asked if he could arrange for us to have a peek at a production greenhouse, a tour of the area where the orchids are maintained when not in bloom, and an area for a meeting around 2 PM.  He has acknowledged my email and it has been several days.  This would indicate, I hope, that he is working on it and trying to make it happen.  No’s are usually quick and to the point.

To prepare for future arrangements I would appreciate all those who are thinking of going please answer this email.  Please include your email address and the number of people attending.  In that way I can direct future emails to just those considering attending, and not bothering those who have no intention of going.  You are not committing to anything.  They will provide the same service if we are 5, or 30, people.   It will allow me to better prepare what we can or can’t do.  I don’t care if you want to bring non-members.  If we get either, or both tours, it is interesting to see.  I have never seen the orchid back yard but the production greenhouses are huge and interesting.  For those who have never been to Longwood, the orchid room is a T shaped room with probably more than a hundred blooming orchids.  During the Orchid Extravaganza there are orchids in multiple other areas.  I think it is worth the trip.

Lastly, since Bea and I are going we would have room for 2 people who don’t feel comfortable driving.  I will warn you that I will be making a stop at a storage locker in Kennett Square, to drop off souvenir mugs from our ADS National Dahlia Show from this past September.  This will add about 15 minutes to our return home.  It takes us about 65 minutes from Riverton to Longwood Gardens.

LAST GROUP EMAIL RE UPCOMING LONGWOOD GARDENS TOUR AND MEETING

Mike Horn

Hi,  I have decided to send one last message out to the group re the upcoming Longwood Gardens visit.  I have heard back and unfortunately the Production Greenhouses are closed and a back tour is not an option.  That said we have access to a room that we can meet in.  There are adjacent rest room facilities and it is very convenient to where we will be.  I have heard from a number of people and will continue to contact them as we get closer.  We have a full car (2 people plus Bea and me)  so that offer no longer is open.  Looking forward to a fun day at Longwood.  Everything will be accessible by electric cart for anyone with difficulty walking.  There is no charge for the cart, donations are welcome but not necessary.
