We have a fantastic speaker booked for the Oct 2nd meeting. Dennis Whigham, a Senior Botanist, and the Founding Director of the North American Orchid Conservation Center, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, will entertain and enlighten us about his organization and efforts to save endangered species of orchids.
He is coming all the way from DC so will require accommodations for the night of our meeting. We can put him up in a hotel, but it would be nicer if a member has a guest room to spare. The best benefit to the host is all the additional time you have with a very knowledgeable man.
Does anyone have an available guest room for Oct 2nd ? Please let me know here, or privately at mdhageman1@....
Thanks,
Marie

Hi, Are you referring to the membership application? If so, I will have them at our first meeting. I hope you know that because of Labor Day, we are moving our first meeting to the second Tuesday of the month. If that changes yet again, I will let you know, but that is my current understanding.

Hi Everyone,

We are very sad to see the Gange's leave NJ, but wish them well at the same time.  They will remain a part of our orchid family, even from Indianapolis.

Please take the opportunity to say so long to Susan and David and to purchase great plants from their collection at great prices.  This will be the last time we will have that chance : (

Hi Kim,

Thanks for your offer to email info about my sale to NJOS and DCOS. Upon reflection, I would appreciate your sending the following to the membership:

Some of you have heard that my husband and I are moving to the Indianapolis area. It's been a whirlwind of activity around here, getting the house ready to sell, and now we hear that the movers are arriving next week, weeks earlier than we had anticipated. So, I'm inviting you to our orchid sale, this Friday and Saturday, from 10 am to 4pm. Phals in 4" pots are $8, 5" pots are $10, and 6" pots are $15. Other genera include Miltoniopsis, Dendrobiums, Oncidiums, Cattleyas, etc. in 4" pots for $10, 5" pots for $15, 6" pots for $20, and 7"pots for $30. Cash or checks are accepted, and all sales are final. For this sale, no appointment is needed. Driving directions are on our website. Park on the lawn and walk a short distance back to the greenhouse, since there are only a few parking spots in front of the greenhouse. Do call if you have any questions.

Hi Rosanne, Bob and I went to the sale yesterday and it was kind of sad. I did buy 2 small dendrobiums but most of the plants were not in good condition and I remember her at the vendors with beautiful phals. I hate to see another place bite the dust. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Sherron   ps. the area in Pennington is beautiful and there is a great quilt shop there so the trip was a good one overall!

I'm reaching out real quick because this goes away Sunday...

It's the first time ever that we've offered a way to "TRY" AOS membership.

Considering nearly 1,500 people joined this month for some very good reasons...

I wanted to give you another opportunity to renew before this disappears, here's why:

This month, the HUGE attraction was the publishing of the annual supplement our award-winning Orchids Magazine.

It is an 80-page Cymbidium reference and guide that goes ONLINE MONDAY!

Everyone that has previewed it was BLOWN AWAY with the photos, articles, and the orchid culture and growing advice.

That's just one reason we invite you to join today and get access to view this entire Cymbidium supplement when it goes live on Monday!

EVEN BETTER...

When you join as an annual member today, you'll also get next year's supplement which is expected to be bigger and even more popular.

Plus, you'll receive INSTANT ACCESS to view all the past magazine issues and supplements in the archive today (dating back to the 1930's). That includes the ability to download last year's supplement on Phalaenopsis!

YET, AOS MEMBERSHIP HAS SO MUCH MORE TO OFFER...

Beyond the entire digital archive of the award-winning Orchids magazine and annual supplements including the current issues and dating back to the 1930's, you'll also receive:

* A new orchid webinar every month

* Monthly live and recorded question and answer chats hosted by our orchid experts
(ask any question - you can even email your questions)

* Instant access to over 60 pre-recorded webinars on popular orchid topics

* Email orchid course for beginners with 17 valuable lessons from watering to pest and virus control

* Free and discounted admission to nearly 300 botanical gardens

* Savings on orchid publications, plants, supplies, and more

The value of AOS membership makes joining a very easy decision.

If you have any interest at all in orchids, I encourage you to join today. You'll be part of a growing community of nearly 10,000 AOS members around the world.

If you aren't sure about annual membership...

HERE'S YOUR LAST CHANCE TO "TRY" AOS MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP

For the FIRST TIME EVER (and only for 2 more days), new and past members can "TRY" monthly membership for just $1.

This GOES AWAY SUNDAY, so please be sure to join today.

To our sister societies:

The 2018 DCOS Auction has been finalized.  As of today, we have:
  • 330 orchids in the largest auction in NJ, which includes a number of special plants:
    • Several Cattleya mother divisions of select plants.
    • Several Cymbidium mother divisions from Fair Orchids
    • A nice selection of Bulbophyllums from several sources
    • A good selection of awarded Cattleyas (species & hybrids).
    • A spectacular selection of Catasetums/Fredclarkaras from SVO.
    • Several specimen size plants, such as:
      • 3 fan Paph micranthum
      • Very large Pholidota gibbosa
  • A new venue at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, NJ, with great amenities, including:
    • Free Parking
    • Free mimosa to early arrivals.
    • Hot buffet lunch ($16 at the door)
    • Great companionship & competition with fellow orchid growers.
    • Cash Bar
    • Sports betting in the next room
Easy directions: Take The Garden State Parkway to Exit 105.
Take Route 36 East, and follow the signs to Monmouth Park.
Make Left onto Oceanport Avenue, and take first entrance into Monmouth Park complex (Clubhouse/Valet Parking).

Attached you will find the complete plant list in 3 formats:
  • Sorted alphabetically
  • Sorted by vendor (MD = Member Donation)
  • Sorted in auction sequence.
The full slide presentation with all 330 plants is too large to attach here, but it can be viewed (or downloaded from).

As something new, on each slide we have:
a.  Used the current taxonomic name to the best of our ability.
b.  Included basic cultural needs for this plant.
c.  Origin of the plant
d.  Any special features we are aware of.

We are also prepared to accommodate those who would like to bid on something, but can't make it to the auction.  To bid without being present, you need to send an Email to Terri Reynolds (terezre@...), with:
  1. Your name & phone number
  2. What plants you are interested in.
  3. Maximum bid on each plant, and maximum total for all plants (if applicable).
  4. Credit card to be used for charging for winning bids at the end of the auction.
  5. We do not have arrangements for shipping.  Plants may be collected at the DCOS October meeting (Oct 9th, Reformed Temple, 332 Hance Avenue, Tinton Falls, NJ), between 7 & 9 PM.
If you have any questions about this event, please feel free to send me mail.

Kim Feddersen

Hi Marie,
Sorry, Myrna and I won't be able to attend tonight's meeting.

Greetings Pinelands Orchid Society members:

The monthly meeting of the Pinelands Orchid Society will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 2nd, as usual, at Cadbury at Cherry Hill, Oak Room, 2150 Route 38.

Topic: Native orchids: Conservation and Ecology

We have a fantastic speaker booked for this meeting. Dennis Whigham, a Senior Botanist, and the Founding Director of the North American Orchid Conservation Center, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, will entertain and enlighten us about his organization, and their efforts to save endangered species of orchids.

A reminder: DUES ARE DUE. If you weren’t at the last meeting or didn’t bring them then, please bring your Annual dues of $20 individual, $25 family, as cash, or a check payable to Pinelands Orchid Society.
Dues pay for our coffee/tea/water/paper products from Cadbury, and for our speakers’ fees, and expenses, etc.

If your last name begins with H-N, please bring a sweet or savory snack to share. (Drinks provided.)

Doors will open to accept Show Table Plants at 7:00 p.m. Remember: Show Table plants, along with their completed Show Table slips, must be on the Show Tables by 7:30 p.m. sharp in order to be eligible for judging!

Feel free to come early to help set-up.

See you there,
Marie
