Hello Sherron,

I had the flu since Monday and could not make the POS meeting.  I’ve been sick every time the meetings come around.

Hope to catch up with Pinelands at some point in time.

Glad to hear the meeting went well.

Thanks for the email. Always appreciate hearing from you.

Happy New Year to all—

The monthly meeting of the Pinelands Orchid Society will be held on Tuesday, January 15th, at Cadbury at Cherry Hill, (Oak Room), 2150 Route 38.

Ed Weber , an AOS Accredited judge will delight us with "Oddities of the Orchid World," a look at the reasons why we love these strange and wonderful flowers. Will this talk take you back to a time when orchids were new, strange and wonderful, and you just couldn't get enough of them?

Please bring your payment to this meeting, as I must make the reservation the next day, and payment is required to make our reservation. (If we do not have the minimum 15 sign up, your payment will be refunded.)

If your last name begins with: V,X,Y,Z, A, or B, please bring a sweet or savory snack to share. (Drinks provided.)

Doors will open to accept Show Table Plants at 7:00 p.m. Remember: Show Table plants, along with their completed Show Table slips, must be on the Show Tables by 7:30 p.m. sharp in order to be eligible for judging!

Tuesday, Jan 15th
As you know by now, our January meeting must be postponed, as the first Tuesday is New Year’s Day. When we postpone until the second Tuesday, we conflict with three other orchid societies, resulting in unavailability of speakers and some of our members being forced to choose. So to be kind to everyone, we are scheduling our January meeting for the third Tuesday, Jan 15th.
Still working on confirming a speaker, but the availability of the room has been confirmed by Cadbury for the 15th.

Also-
Saturday Feb 9th
Our February meeting will be a field trip to the Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens.

I tried to get us an orchid- specific tour, but they won’t go for it…
“Longwood does not offer custom guided tours on your topic of choice. The only guided tour offered to groups is the Longwood Story Tour: highlights of our diverse gardens while learning about our heritage and how one man's vision turned Longwood into one of the great gardens of the world.”
This is not really a peak-winter activity, so we will tour Longwood on our own.

We need 15 people to get the group rate of $19.00 each. (The regular price is $ 23.00.)
If you’d like to go, send your payment to Mike, see below, or bring it to the January meeting, as I must make the reservation right after our meeting, and payment is required to make our reservation. (If we do not get the minimum 15 signed up, your payment will be refunded.)

The tickets will be for 10 am. (accommodating arrival times from 9:30a - 10:30a). Transportation is on our own so we can each set our own departure time. (Stay for the light show or be home in time for dinner, as you choose.)

To all members and interested parties;

Marie Hageman

Greetings,

A few items need to be addressed.

We have several volunteer opportunities to be filled. If everyone pitches in and helps, the few who are trying to do the tasks of several positions won’t be overwhelmed.
The Non-Elected Positions to be filled are:
Greeter -
Programs/Speakers –
Show Table Manager-
Please email or call me if you have any questions or are interested in filling one of these.

On the subject of everyone pitching in, there are several folks who haven’t paid their dues, yet. I’m sure you don’t want me to keep reminding you at every meeting. Those who have paid on time shouldn’t have to hear it.

For the record, the treasury is declining as speakers fees and other expenses rise, while membership declines. Another club in the area is considering drastic measures as they are in an even worse situation. We are OK now, but don’t want to wait until we are in dire straits.

Therefore, the officers have had a meeting and come to these conclusions:

Unpaid dues may be inadvertent. (I, myself, forgot last year, as I missed so many meetings due to my other commitments and the meeting’s cancellations), so we are enclosing the current list.

Membership should have its benefits. Therefore, the officers have agreed that if someone has not paid dues, by the December meeting, their show table points revert to zero, and no further points, nor raffle tickets, can be earned until their membership becomes current. We cannot retroactively add back their lost points.  (Since we just made this decision, we will extend the deadline this year to the January meeting.)

This is a list of the current members of the Pinelands Orchid Society:
1-Bookbinder, Bob & Myrna        Family
2-Cauler, Laura                                Individual
3-Dallman, Elishia                           Individual
4-Davis, Bob & Sherron                 Family
5-Deutsch, Herb & Sharon            Family
6-Dunigan, Michael                        Family
7-Ference, Ron                                Individual
8-Giles, Jeanne                                Individual
9-Gilman, Tom                                 Individual
10-Hageman, Marie                       Individual
11-Horn, Bea & Mike                     Family
12-Jacob, Michael                           Individual
13-Koser, Todd                                Family
13-Masso, Ernie                               Family
14-Nunez, Rosanne                        Individual
15-Quirk, Bill                                    Individual
16-Richards, Carole                        Individual
17-Saraduke, Bayard                      Family
18-Weinstein, Judith                      Individual
If you don’t see your name above please pay your dues at the next meeting in January, or mail them to our treasurer:
Pinelands Orchid Society
c/o Mike Horn
107 Lippincott Ave
Riverton, NJ 08077

I’m still working on the Jan meeting. The first Tues is the Holiday, and the second Tues conflicts with 3 other orchid societies, so speakers are booked, so I am trying for the third Tues, but Cadbury hasn’t confirmed availability. Stay tuned.

Thanks for all you do to make our club a success.
Marie

Re: More Good news

Bob and Sherron Davis

Marie, I think as sometimes happens, messages start flying and are misinterpreted. Bob and I did not know that we were to be in charge of the show table. We did not send in our money for the dinner so I assumed that whoever was in charge would know we could not do the show table. I feel that many of these words are hurtful and we all need to step back and take a breath and realize that at the core of this club are people who all love orchids. A dinner is not worth alienating the few members that we have in this club. We do appreciate  what you have done for the club and I am sorry that you felt badgered and coerced into taking the job. I think this is a perfect example of how the internet misinterprets and interferes in honest face-to fact contact.Sherron

All are welcome to celebrating the Holiday season with the entire club, rather then just the few members who went to the Villa Barone restaurant.

Tonight we  have a wonderful setting where we can gather together in festive surroundings with a huge variety of International food selections, unheard of at an Italian restaurant, (or most others of 1 nationality.)
I'm sure this is why the club voted for the buffet idea out of the four choices presented, and did not answer the request for any other chioces.

One correction to my previous email: According to our web site, Bob & Sherry Davis are in charge of our show table. So, when I stated that I needed to get the supplies from Mike Dunigan, I was mistaken. The Davises need to get them and set up the show table tonight, as they will be doing in future. Apparently, I stepped on their toes by taking charge of it, as I was told I needed to do.Therefore, the question as to whether we will have a show table is contingent upon them.
Of course, instead of coercing and badgering me over several months to be President, either, or both of them, could have taken the job.

I have a series of meetings today, so won't be available before our meeting/dinner. I will still be there at 5:30, but if anyone has questions about the show table, I am not the one to ask, anyway. Feel free to ask them.

Hope to see you all there.
Happy Holidays to one and all,
Marie

Sherry and I have always been supportive of our Pinelands Orchid Society and always looked forward to celebrating the Christmas season with the club. We felt that our past celebrations at the Villa Barone restaurant was a wonderful setting where we could gather together in festive surroundings with a speaker and show table. Not to mention a wonderful food selections. I don't know where Marie came up with a Chinese buffet idea, but it appears we did not have a choice in the matter, so we decided we would pass on this one. It appears that we are being swayed by someone's personal food preferences in place of everything else.

Hi all:  I would like to second Marie’s comments about tomorrow evening.  I hope people realize that the event is not about the food, but about the company.  We have a very nice group of orchid enthusiasts.  This is a way of saying thank you to those who take the time to organize our monthly meetings.  We all contribute to our education and enjoyment of growing a great flower.  It would be nice to see a good turnout of orchid people, whether they choose to eat, snack, or just want to support the group.

December’s meeting is the Holiday Party. We will gather in the spacious party room at the Ruby Buffet, 2100 Route 38 Cherry Hill for an all-you-can-eat feast, starting at 6pm.
The price of $20. is all-inclusive of unlimited appetizers, entrees, sides, desserts, and tax, tip, and soft drinks.
For those who want something stronger, it is BYOB and the Total Wine store is right next door.
Guests are welcome for the same low price of $20 each.

We will have a show table if someone can get in touch with Mike Dunigan. He has all the supplies needed and he doesn't answer his emails and his phone is not working. If anyone lives near him, please either remind him to bring them, or just bring the things, yourself- early would be great. I'll be there by 5:30.

Hi Bob,

As I recall four different options were offered at the October meeting and Ruby Buffet received the most votes. It is not a "Chinese" buffet but has various cuisines. We will have our own private area. Consider giving it a try.

If anyone lives near him, please either remind him to bring them, or just bring the things, yourself- early would be great. I'll be there by 5:30.

Thank you.
See you there, Marie

Marie, an echeck has been sent from my bank for John and I. The bank tends to be a bit slow, so letting you know here too. Are we supposed to bring plants for the show table?
