Our Annual Plant Auction

Marie Hageman

Reminder, our Annual Plant Auction is coming up MAY 7th.
Please send a list of the plants you are donating to this group so everyone can have a sneak-peak of what will be available and our compiler can make the list for printing.

We still need a volunteer to compile the donations into a list to be printed, which makes following the auction easier. If you can do this, please reply here or email me privately.
Thanks,
Marie

Re: Officers Elections

Marie Hageman

Hi David.
Nice to chat to a fellow orchid club officer.

I can tell you that I have a program, "Duplicitous  Seduction Amongst the Orchids", with the tagline, "Employing an array of deviously enticing, but empty, promises, orchids are called the “Agent Provocateurs” of the plant kingdom."

I know of several club members who do have programs, but I don't want to unfairly mention some and omit others.

I'm sure your posting will bring responses from those who are willing to speak for your group.

Looks like we should have a listing on our website. Do you have such a listing?

Thanks,
Marie

The monthly meeting of the Pinelands Orchid Society will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd, at Cadbury at Cherry Hill, Oak Room, 2150 Route 38, at 7:30 PM.

Program: Native Orchid Conservation - a Continental-Scale Collaborative Effort, presented by Julianne McGuinness, Program Development Coordinator for North American Orchid Conservation Center.

If your last name begins with: J,K,L,M,N,O, or P, please bring a sweet or savory snack to share. (Drinks provided.)

Doors will open to accept Show Table Plants at 6:30 p.m. Remember: Show Table plants, along with their completed Show Table slips, must be on the Show Tables by 7:00 p.m. sharp in order to be eligible for judging!

See you there,

HELLO, Orchid Growers

The Mid-Atlantic Judging Center would like to hear from you. We are the American Orchid Society judges who judge at your shows and who conduct AOS judging the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the Horticultural Center in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia.

We’re interested in learning how much you know about our judging process. We’d also like to know if you have ever joined us for monthly judging, and your impressions of the judging process. If you have never joined us, we’re interested in learning why.

To answer some of these questions, and to get a better sense of the community of orchid growers whom we serve, we are attaching a brief survey. Please just click on the link below. The survey should take you 10 minutes tops.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScWxW5kNecPcTCL5E-VcaG_sksmLQPugYcfsvZVMwriJm5q0A/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1

The survey is anonymous, UNLESS you want to enter a lottery to win a $50 gift certificate to Waldor Orchids. At the conclusion of the survey, one winner from among all the respondents will be selected. To enter the lottery, you must give us your email address at the end of the survey, so that we can contact you if you are the lucky winner.

GOOD LUCK, and Thanks!

Cathy Higgins

UPDATE ON LONGWOOD GARDENS MEETING

Hi,  I wanted to give everyone an update on our meeting at Longwood Gardens on 9 February, 2019.  The group that paid for the trip at $19 / head should be aware that we are unlikely to get the group rate with the 15 individuals.  That will make the cost $23/person.  I am hoping that most people can get there by 10 AM.  That will leave time for walking through the conservatory and trying the mushroom soup at the cafeteria.

I have sent a note off to my contact at Longwood.  I asked if he could arrange for us to have a peek at a production greenhouse, a tour of the area where the orchids are maintained when not in bloom, and an area for a meeting around 2 PM.  He has acknowledged my email and it has been several days.  This would indicate, I hope, that he is working on it and trying to make it happen.  No’s are usually quick and to the point.

To prepare for future arrangements I would appreciate all those who are thinking of going please answer this email.  Please include your email address and the number of people attending.  In that way I can direct future emails to just those considering attending, and not bothering those who have no intention of going.  You are not committing to anything.  They will provide the same service if we are 5, or 30, people.   It will allow me to better prepare what we can or can’t do.  I don’t care if you want to bring non-members.  If we get either, or both tours, it is interesting to see.  I have never seen the orchid back yard but the production greenhouses are huge and interesting.  For those who have never been to Longwood, the orchid room is a T shaped room with probably more than a hundred blooming orchids.  During the Orchid Extravaganza there are orchids in multiple other areas.  I think it is worth the trip.

Lastly, since Bea and I are going we would have room for 2 people who don’t feel comfortable driving.  I will warn you that I will be making a stop at a storage locker in Kennett Square, to drop off souvenir mugs from our ADS National Dahlia Show from this past September.  This will add about 15 minutes to our return home.  It takes us about 65 minutes from Riverton to Longwood Gardens.
