Re: Lighting

Kevin Crockett - VK3CKC

I fiddled a bit with a sketch and very easily managed to change it to a flashing indicator display. Had to experiment with colour to get what was suitable but it quickly fell into place. Only a small step to a two-light-level tail/stop lamp and a couple of logic things and it is sorted.

Easy!

Lighting

Have you ever been perplexed about what sort of lighting to purchase for your trike or bike? There are so many types, sizes, running voltage, running current, effectiveness, mounting requirements, etc., to consider and I find the need to have a number of small batteries and having to check them decidedly annoying. In short, there is a requirement for a "better mousetrap".

I purchased a number of RGB WS2812 8-LED strips and a couple of 1m lengths WS2812 strips for testing. Although I had a couple of Arduino Uno boards, I also bought an Arduino Nano. I tried a downloaded Arduino sketch using the FastLED library but I couldn't get the Nano to run it for some reason. I loaded the same thing to a Uno that has run other sketches and it runs perfectly. The LEDs run off 5V which leads to one power source for all lights.

The exercise has proved completely successful and I have an 8-LED demo running a wide variety of colours and displays from a USB battery bank at 90mA.

My plan is to use WS2812 LEDs for everything except headlight use - tail light (low intensity), stop light (high intensity), turn indicators, body interior lighting and display lighting with whatever colour, intensity and pattern takes my fancy. The 8-LED strips will be generally put them in a small Jiffy box, replacing the lid with a diffusing panel. I do have a couple of plastic panels that can be used for this.

There are plenty of examples of using WS2812 LEDs on the Internet.

If you get experimenting, please post your results here.

Am in Ballarat on Thursday.

Ride: Thursday, Jan 10.

Kevin Crockett - VK3CKC

Leaving Axedale around 8.30am to then leave Lake Weeroona about 9.30am for the Long Gully MensShed - near the Long Gully BP servo, Eaglehawk Road. Only a few kilometres along the Long Gully Trail. I am a member but anyone is welcome as a visitor. Stay there for an hour or so, and return.

Re: Ride: Sat, January 5, 2019.

A good ride yesterday - despite the rain. It was 55km for Lloyd and Kevin. Robert, VK3BSZ, joined us from Lake Weeroona to Howard Street, Epsom. Four of us, at least, got wet and I really need to make some mudguards. One doesn't often get a chance to ride in the wet but my arms are right in the firing line from the tyres. The back wheel also needs a guard to stop wet sand and other muck from being thrown forward onto parts not designed for the catching of such stuff.

Ride: Sat, January 5, 2019.

Kevin and Lloyd leaving Axedale around 8.30am, joined by Graeme at Mayfair Park around 9.40am, arrive Lake Weeroona around 10am, joined by Trevor for a coffee, then head to Epsom, then Wellsford Forest to Rifle Butts and heading for home.

Would be interested in having more join us.

Added an image of the near completed "Hilgo" gear change mechanism , with some comments, to the Trio photo album. Slowly, but surely, getting there.

Re: New Technology

Success! I made up a very rough bracket to hold the gear change slider firmly in position to see how it worked without being able to move other than as it should. Changing was feather light and positive. The rig is not good enough for photographs as yet.

Normal derailleur levers will not be suitable as it requires a push/pull arrangement. I also think that the required cable movement will probably be more than a standard control may provide. I think I will be making up a single lever - forward to slow down and rearward to speed up. Shouldn't be too difficult but will have to wait until later.

Like termites, just because you can't see me doing anything, doesn't mean I am not doing anything.

I now have all components of my "Hilgo" transmission copy made up, tried in situ, and it works a treat. A little bit of tweaking regarding final positioning of all components and trying various spring loading of the front chain tensioner and it is done. Images available when I get it all finalised. I can then move on to the front suspension and steering. The end slowly draws near.

Re: Ride: Nov 29. Bendigo to Elmore and Return

Kevin Crockett - VK3CKC

Weather again. Not fancying battling a head wind on such a long ride. So, it's a ride to Lake Weeroona and Hargreaves Mall, Bendigo, instead, but one day ...

Re: Ride: Nov 23. Bendigo to Elmore and Return

Graeme Knight - VK3GRK

Yes that will be fine. I forgot about those sections along the track, but they would certainly be full of water!

Re: Ride: Nov 23. Bendigo to Elmore and Return

Kevin Crockett - VK3CKC

Well, the wet weather has put an end to the Elmore ride for tomorrow. There are two places that would be expected to be under water and the surface of the old road may also be a bit muddy in places.

Shall we look at it for next week?

Ride: Nov 23. Bendigo to Elmore and Return

Kevin Crockett - VK3CKC

Subject to weather, we are planning a ride, Starting from Lake Weeroona around 9.30am, to Elmore (about 45km), lunch at the Bakery, and return. Route will be: Bendigo Creek Trail to Epsom, Midland Hwy to Huntly, Old Murray Road to Elmore. A mainly flat ride.
