Halloween paddle November 5th???
elaineginader
Hi John, I looked on the messabout calendar for the date of the Halloween paddle from Ellk City to Cannon Quary. The calendar says the 5th the info on it says the 6th. I'm wondering which date and if the meet up time is correct. It's not that far off and I'm planning to go this year to take my kayak for a paddle. Elaine |

I thought I updated the Yaquina float pages months ago! <sigh> (isn't that what I said last year too? <g>) The float dates and details are dependent on the tides, so there's no reason I can't do the pages a year ahead, or even a decade...

Cobblestone Pizza is probably not open on Sundays, so the Yaquina floats are scheduled on Saturdays, November 5th for the Halloween float this year: http://www.coots.org/mb/Halloween/ The ebb tide won't be as strong as last year, but it starts earlier, so we won't be loading boats on trailers in the dark. :o) I'll get to updating the After Thanksgiving float page tonite... Thank you Bob and John for fixing the meet up time. I don't want to be late like past times. See you there, I have to fix something on my trailer so I'd better get busy. The 10-day forecast (extrapolated a day) is showing the 5th of Nov to be under the influence of the Pacific High pressure. This can be great weather for being out on the Yaquina River.
Elaine, we look forward to seeing you there and the same for all others that can make it! |

SO, what kind of boats do you all bring? Anything?

Usually on the smaller side, but otherwise almost anything. Look at John's pictures, such as this group.
The time is chosen for the water to be flowing out, so there is a knot or two of free motion. |

Hi all, I most likely won't be joining you on the Halloween paddle. If you're not on Facebook Michael has a new boat. A Friendship gaff rigged sloop and I'm sewing a cover for her. Big job a lot of thinking is being done. No play till this project is complete. See pictures below. I'm gonna have to miss this float, due the the plague I caught (most likely) from our friends Up North. It looks like it'll be wet, but the Weatherman backed off on his worst threats -- now he's just calling for showers in the afternoon. Heavy rain Friday should give a strong outgoing tide, even though it won't be a big lunar/solar tide:

http://www.coots.org/mb/Halloween/ We've had fun on rainy day floats. Don't be a wimp. <g> On 10/26/2022 4:18 PM, Bob L wrote:

The total rain forecast for the coast range is in the 2+ inch range. They don't forecast the Yaquina R. levels, but the Alsea R. is expected to rise 2-ft and the Siletz 3-ft. Wind is expected to continue into Saturday along with isolated squalls.
I have two concerns. First, the initial river rise in the fall washes the wood from the banks into the water. The river flow will be up considerably moving this debris along. The second is due to the classic current flow against wind and wind waves. This is particularly an issue in the last stretch going south to Cannon Quarry park where the waves may get past uncomfortable. Or, maybe none of this is an issue. But with the uncertainty I plan to skip this one and get ready for the trip on Dec 3 from Cannon Quarry to the Toledo Airport ramp. What are other people's thoughts? I'm not a local :-) |

Hi Bob, In my other email I won't be coming this year but if I had been planning to I'd skip it for the same reasons as yours. Staying home warm, dry, and safe, sounds like the smart thing to do tomorrow. Fighting wind gusts to 30 mph in a small boat is either fun nor safe, even if the wind isn't against the current. The forecast West wind will be funneled either up or down the river by the hills -- more likely up, just because <g> -- with errant gusts coming down through gaps. :o( We've had fun on wet Yaquina floats, but strong wind isn't any fun at all! Good point about the drift, too.

Kinda fun! :o) Environment Canada kept threatening that a "atmospheric river" was gonna hit BC all last week. While we had rain sometimes, and a bit of wind now and then, the "river" didn't show up until after the ship returned to Menzies Bay Sunday. <shrug> Best not to push one's luck on the Yaquina tomorrow. Sometimes the Weatherman is right. ;o) On 11/4/2022 10:12 AM, I wrote:

I have not boated there and won’t be there from here but the shoreline scour of freshly fallen snags, etc would be enough to keep me home in front of the fire, too. Not to mention the ‘atmospheric river’ of wind and mucho rain.

Don't be silly, Bill. We'd have had to patch up our inflatable boats and gather together enough tall tales and BS to keep them full of enough hot air to keep them aloft long enough for a good paddle. There just wasn't time. Maybe next time an "atmospheric river" comes our way we can be better prepared... <g>
