Cathlamet fall messabout

Mark Neuhaus

Hi group,

Now that John has moved the fall messabout to the last weekend of this month, I guess I should post a little info about what I envision it to be.

First off, I checked with the marina folks in Cathlamet last week as I headed for the WA coast. They said essentially the same thing they told me a few months ago - regular fees apply.  Attached is their rate sheet for the marina.  If you are at the dock, you don't pay the parking price. If we anchor out, we do.

I don't have info on the campground, but it may be online.  I was told that the yurts, a-frames, and cabins were all booked. There is also a park in Skamokawa, a few miles downstream.

As for the timing for the messabout.  The calendar shows the "official" days as Fri-Sun, so I guess we would be in port Friday and Saturday nights doing our normal boaty, BS-ing things during the day.

I suggested that we could do an overnight "cruise" before, and again, after the weekend, going in opposite directions if there is interest.  John suggested that we might want to do day trips instead, as that would allow non-sleepaboards to partake. I figure we can talk that out depending on who can make it.

The Cathlamet marina has coin-operated showers and is walking distance to various restaurants and a brewery and a grocery store.  I believe Dan M. has already picked all the blackberries along the various paths.  :-)

At this time, my Tolman is still on her trailer from the Toledo trip.  I was planning on trailering her to Cathlamet.  However, if anyone wants to take a couple of days to go by water from Portland, I would be willing to try that.  I've never been on that stretch of the Columbia in any boat, but would love to try it.

Suggestions/comments?

Mark

Thanks Mark.

I’m still very interested in this and would be motoring down from Kadow’s Marina on the Columbia below Kelly Point.  I’d probably want to leave on Thursday and arrive Cathlamet Friday, spending Thurs. night either at Rainier docks or anchoring somewhere downstream a bit from there.  Summer afternoons get very windy with big waves around Cape Horn upstream from Cathlamet, so it’s best to go thru there in the morning, unless you like waves and are going upstream---then surf away!

I’ll want to plug in and recharge batteries at Cathlamet.  When I was there a couple weeks ago for the NWSS Annual Meet, it looked like they have charging pedestals at the non-guest docks, so I’ll give them a call about that.

Camping at the marina is nice---we camped in our Vanagon there on the dike at one of the tent sites, which was cheap enough and views very nice.  We were initially told there was no availability but when I later called they said that must have been a mistake.  One thing that sucks is that since the harbor has a launch ramp right there, during fishing season you’ll get boats being launched and retrieved very early and late.  Worse, some of these same fisherman camp there out on the dike and back their boat and diesel truck right by your camp with lights blaring at oh-dark-thirty.

Still, overall, it’s a nice spot.  The camper next to us was also in a Vanagon and had been camping there for a month already….seemed pretty laid back.

I'm glad to hear this. I'm not sure I would want to attempt a solo trip, but would rather have experienced companions for the first time.

That would be fine with me.  Being retired means flexibility.  :-)

I know that a couple of years ago, Harvey was there with his electric cabin cruiser and he moved over to an empty slip for re-charging. Don't know if he arranged that ahead of time.

George camped there in August instead of setting his tent up in his Bartender as he did in Toledo, and said that the guy next to him must have caught some fish as he had his generator going all night keeping a deep freezer going.  Or that's what he assumed. For some reason, I seem to remember that fishing is over by our weekend.  We'll see.

Hi Mark-

Just was syncing with my wife to see if I can travel with her in the coming month and thought I’d check when this Cathlamet messabout was slated for.  I couldn’t find dates in this message thread and checked my Coots calendar on my wall---says the Fall messabout is this coming weekend.  If that is the case, I can’t make it as I’ve been planning to sturgeon fish on Saturday (1 of 3 days this year) with a friend.  If the plan was to do the messabout on one of the following weekends, I can make that.

Hi Myles,

John moved messabout to 23rd-25th to coincide with Cathlamet cruise dates. I am glad you are free that weekend and hope to travel with you on the water both ways. I got my boat launched despite low water at my moorage's ramp just downstream of Fred's  Marina. Heading out there shortly for a few hours in the Multnomah Channel.

Hope others are planning on joining in the messabout.

Hi group,

Just in case everyone doesn't read every thread, I figured I better post back to this thread.

Yes, the Cathlamet Fall messabout is still on.  I plan on arriving by water or trailer no later than Friday. Nothing formal is planned, such as a group dinner, museum trip, or Puget Island garage sale event, although nothing is ruled out either. Just a bunch of mutual spontaneous happenings. (Sorry, flashback to the 60s, there.) Weather forecast I saw this morning says we will luck out, especially compared to the last fall messabout three years ago.  Hey, maybe someone with a fast boat could go over to Westport and bring back a pie or two from the Berry Patch Restaurant?  :-)

Marina folks had asked if I could let them know an approximate number of boats wanting dock space, so if you know you will be there, let me know.  Otherwise, I suspect we will make do.

Hope to see you then,
Mark

Hi Mark-

I’d like dock space, though probably/maybe a space where I can plug in and recharge.

Thinking I’ll leave on Thursday, then tie up at Rainier or anchor up downstream from there a bit.  Then leave Friday morning early and arrive hopefully before the winds get up…maybe go the Southwest side around Puget island, then come into Cathlamet.  Depends.  If there were a dock at Westport to tie up, I might consider the pie… J

I won't be needing dock space. Alas, I haven't fully recovered from the Port Townsend Fest and, especially, the many hours on the road. I'm not made of the same strong stuff as Dan from Almostcanada. <sigh> I just can't bear the thought of dragging Lazy Jack down the highway again so soon. And Mary has some projects lined up for me over at the beach cottage... Sorry for wimping out again, Mark. Maybe next year I'll be so thrilled with Lazy Jack's new trailer (this winter I really am going to set it up for her <g>) I'll be wanting to use it every chance I get. ;o)

Have fun!

Hi Mark,

Going back down to Cathlamet for the cruise is very tempting. I really love that area, plus it was great cruising with you there back in august, but I have to pass on this one.

Thanks for organizing it.

I spoke with the marina folks today and sadly, if you have "a boat in our marina", you have to pay dock fees whether you sleep aboard or not.  However, you can put it back on your trailer and have it in your campsite with no extra fee. I suspect that if you leave it on the trailer in the parking lot, you may have to pay a parking fee. My charm didn't work and maybe I'll ask Allen and Julius to try to work on them for us.

I won't be coming downstream by water, as Myles had an unfortunate episode today which keeps him from attending after all. I will trailer the Tolman down there on Friday instead.  If anyone wants to spend a night or so after the weekend messabout, maybe anchoring out someplace, I'd be up for that. Looks like good weather is forecast.

For those who can't attend, we will miss you.  I guess that means we get to drink your share of the beer.  :-)

I hoped to get up to Olympia this week and bring back my CLC Skerry for rowing with the gang at the Cathlamet messabout, but that most likely won't happen. Since I now live most of the time just up the river in Longview, I really need to put in an appearance. I don't drink beer or sleep outside, but I would like to put faces to names and maybe get in some rowing. I'm still formulating a plan, complicated by Virginia having some bad days recently.
