Chesapeake Bay Flattie in Charleston

I added some shots of Ted Chism's Hampton flattie hauled out at the Charleston shipyard. We visited him years ago when he was putting the bottom on:

Ted built the boat from a drawing of the lines from the Smithsonian. No offsets or construction details. He changed the rig to a gaff mainsail.

Grant (Charley and John McC's friend) sent this to the wrong address:

"My heart skipped a beat when I saw your pictures of Ted Chism's Hampton flattie! Howard Chappelle's real boats for real people were some of the inspirational source material I was carrying in my head when I built Sweet Matta Udu in West Africa in 2009. Of course Billy Atkin designed a number of flat-bottom sailboats and those too were high in my thinking.
I asked a young local carpenter for a one-year commitment to build the boat with me and we did it -- just barely. We had one power tool -- a 3/8 inch drill. The inside of the planking was left rough, and I took shortcuts I'm now embarrassed to admit, but the boat was a success in her homespun way.

"Thanks for the Flattie pics, I hope she is still well afloat. I'll be in Toledo with a couple of kayaks and will be happy to chat with fellow Old Coots.

"Grant Morseth, Tucson"

I'm looking forward to seeing you in Toledo, Grant.

I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. (Brendan Behan)

Thanks for sharing, John, that's a beautiful flattie.

Can you tell us about "Serenity" on the hard beside her.   Did some Googling and could not find anything.

I noticed that the "Hampton Flattie" drawing is the illustration in the ad for the Smithsonian boat plans in the latest Ash Breeze!

All I know about the brigantine Serenity is that a gray-haired couple has been building her on an, apparently old (all unpainted concrete boats are gray and look old <g>) unfinished concreted hull. I talked to them once earlier in the project, but that's all I know. I'll post more photos soon.
