I was reminded of an album I got ten years ago of "exciting and often dubiously true" stories and songs by a Danish sailor. I read his book way back when. Thoroughly enjoyable; he spins a good yarn. His version of Leave Her, Johnny is an example of how sea shanties were adapted to the circumstances:
