Just back in -- New Plan

Just as soon as I get Surprises motors back together, and coming soon I hope !! I will buy a good but probably used about min. of 3 to 5, or even 6 hp short shaft outboard for the well in Surprises stern. I have seen a couple I like, by Yamaha or similar. I figure that I doesn't have to turn, just sit in the well and run. With a remote throttle and stop button, I would hope to control the speed for cruising, and stop it for using the electrics. Like Dennis tug, a better way to cover longer distances faster than electrics might. Good for extra push in currents. Can't have the aft cover in the way, needs access to start the motor, but might figure that out by folding the cover out of the way. All parts in for E-motors, get going on that first.
Wish I had something to try first, might be too much weight aft, maybe with less battery I would work ?? After the new parts get in, I can research this before a purchase. If any coots have ideas, that would be good. If I can get my hands on a ( rental,trial, for sale or ?? ) motor that would be good also. I don't want to create a "sea cow" but an extra different 4 stroke outboard power source that balances out would be a plus. Good to be back in town, see ya .... Cal |

I think a 2-2.5 hp. motor would be plenty for Surprise. The 4-6 hp. motors are a lot bigger and heavier. I've got a 2 hp. Honda you can try out, but it hasn't run in quite a while. I'll fire it up in a bucket and see if it still runs, without major surgery. <g> It only weighs about 30 lb.

Sounds about right, John. I don't want too much, but enough to cruise about the same speed. With the 3rd pack removed, I'd have an easy 160 lb lighter, and a gassie would be maybe half that, easy to balance out. I figured I could carry up to 100 b, , less would be better, even more so if there was a remote tank forward. When I get the twins done, and back to Dexter would work well. I think a 3 hp Evinrude light twin like I used to have would be sweet, but they are all 2 strokers, that I know of. They worked so well though !!!
I need to call the repair parts folks today, my motors dis assemble differently than the ones on a stick, makes the points plates on the back side look a bit snug fitting with the magnets pulling (snapping !! ) the armature back through and short leads. I pulled my neck a bit doing all the removals on my back upside down under Surprise. Not going to remove all those epoxied in holding bolts without damage. Solution is to use a neck brace maybe a pillow too, to avoid twisting the wrong way -- again. I can check a couple coot eateries today as well, got town stuff to do. Later, and thanks, Cal |

Hi, Mark John was replying to my thoughts as to a gas backup preferably with small remote tank. I plan to remove maybe 160 lbs of batts. just don't need all 3 packs. A gassie might just be the ticket, as to which size for my heavier boat (batteries @ 320 lb, ) then say 250 to 500 max coot weight in reality. So my load with me only is 520, plus twin mk 80 as drag underwater, plus 4 batts, and hull, to get 1500lb. est. boat weight . That's taking a bunch of push for pushing at 17 footer hull speed and add tide or river resistance. Right now on batts, cruise is about hull speed or less, so I try for 4 mph and around 15 amps for range, solo weight.
I think it will take at least 3 hp, plus I want a remote tank with gas weight to balance it all out again. The 4 strokes being heavier, especially Hondas. The best would be an old 3 hp Evinrude Light twin, but those are very old motors now. If I had an unlimited choice, I'd find a good 4 hp 4 stroke, they have remote tanks. Next down maybe there is a newer water cooled 3-4 hp with remote tank, maybe quieter ?, Some newer 2 strokes could be doable. I have some time to look, and my really top notch mechanic is retiring, so I will visit him today, and have him start a search for what might work. He helped me locate the motor problem last week. I might pick up or have him start looking for one of his good trolling motor trade ins, a good place to check it all out first. Sorta pisses me that I sold my last EVVY 3 hp, had a hard to find 4 hp power prop, in great shape. Didn't think I'd ever need a gassie again. It even had an aftermarket added plug for a remote 3 gallon tank, perfect -- leaked gas when tipped or laid down, but I now have a well open. Gotta Run, have a great day, Cal |

I rounded the weight of my Honda up. <g> It's supposed to weigh 28 lb. like yours. Mine is air cooled, but has a water cooled exhaust. It's noisy when you're going fast, but has a comforting beat when going slow, which you can do because it doesn't have one of those centrifugal clutches. :o) A Good Motor, but after 20-some-odd years I really should overhaul the carburettor...

It may be more than you want, but the outboard I use on Moonlit Turtle is a 6 hp Tohatsu. Weighs 58 pounds and came with a three gallon external tank. Turtle weighs close to a thousand pounds loaded on the water, I seem to remember. I've had five or six adult males on it at hull speed. Like I said, it might be overkill for you. I'd offer it to you for testing if you wanted to try it, but I don't see us getting together soon. Mark |

Cal - I can tell you that most SCAMPs with a gas motor are using the Suzuki 2.5 hp. It is about 29 pounds and much quieter than the Honda. You need to spin it 180 for reverse. There are 3.5 and 4 hp ones with reverse at 40+ pounds.
