Yaquina Bay messabout Spots
I did a little scouting around Yaquina Bay the last few days.
Sawyer's Landing is about a mile closer to Newport than I had it on the map (there's a new map at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MessaboutW/files/YaquinaMap.jpg ), it's right at Yaquina. Advantages to Sawyer's landing are: Right across the road from the Mad Dog tavern (despite the name a nice friendly joint. Closer to interesting sloughs than South Beach. More pleasant location than South Beach. Less of a maze to negotiate before reaching open water. Tent and RV camping. Use of the docks for the day. Decks and picnic tables for hanging out. Grocery store. Disadvantages: No beach (but there might be a nice spot across the bay). Boats launched by hoist for $10 (covers in and out). No place to launch cartop boats except with the hoist. The boat basin at South Beach has few advantages (in my unbiased [kaf! kaf!] opinion: Only $6 to use the ramp. Cartoppers might be able to sneak their boats into the water without paying. A "chuck wagon" selling hamburgers and hot dogs. Easier to sail around looking at old fishing boats. Likelihood of lusty winds. RV camping available. Disadvantages: Lots of rowing for unpowered boats before getting to open water (but the basin seems to be well protected from the tides and the breakwaters are high enough that they might give some protection from the wind for short-masted boats). Inconvenient trailer parking. Sterile atmosphere. No beach (I didn't go looking for Pat's beach near the Hatfield Center). Another launch site on the bay is the Port of Toledo ramp just upstream from Criteser Mooring (within sight). Advantages: Free launching. Close to interesting waters. Close to Criteser Mooring and the interesting old boats that frequent it. Quiet water and light wind for very small boats. Disadvantages: No beach. Spartan facilities (no picnic tables, small dock, no trees). Narrow water. Light wind. Currents are likely stronger than in the wider waters of the bay. No camping. I'm leaning towards Sawyer's Landing for the July 14th messabout, but the choice doesn't have to be mine. Does anyone else have any ideas? Hello all. I've been reading all your messages. I don't type very
well so I just read. I let my wife do the typing, she's faster. There is a ramp just up from Criteser's, toward Toledo. It has the ramp, a nice dock, & parking lot. I lauched there once when I took my Uncle for a boat ride. I don't remember if there's any camping, but we're going over there the 4th so I'll look into more of what's there. July is a busy month for me, I won't be able to make the 14th, we have a Family Reunion in Molalla. Then the 28th I'm showing my Dad's 1948 York Turnabout Tractor at Brook's Antique Tractor Show. I've invited the group if anyone is interested in old tractors & motors( they're just not in boats).The only week-end that's free is the 21st. If it's working out for everyone on the 14th then I'll just try to catch the next one. John, congratulations on the New/Old purchase. Not mad, your just a boat nut like the rest of us. I'm still thinking of selling mine on a web-site, but haven't done much about it yet. Dick

I suppose we could do the messabout on the 21st, but I've mentioned to some people who probably don't monitor this list that it would _probably_ be on the 14th. :o( I suppose we ought to stick to the 14th and hope to catch you next time. We'll miss you though. I stopped at the ramp near Criteser's the other day, it's just a ramp, parking lot and restroom. I think that part of the bay is probably more fun in a motorboat or good rowboat than a sailboat. Sometime quite soon I'm going to try a trip from that ramp up to Elk City with a couple of friends-- using an antique outboard! I think I'll take my little Honda along for insurance. <g> It should be a nice, interesting trip. When you got to the coast can you leave a note about it in the Atkin-like sailing skiff that moors at Critesers? I forgot to the other day. It's an interesting little boat and I hope it shows up. I may see you at the steam-up in Brooks on the 28th. There's always lots of neat machinery there! I went once, years ago, and it turned out to be one of the hottest days of the summer! I thought I was going to die wandering around between those simmering steamers and hot gas engines! Let's hope it's a bit nicer this year. The motor launch needs a lot of work, though it's basically sound. I should replace part of the keelson and possibly a few planks. The engine will need a sleeve eventually, and who knows what else I'll find when I tear it down. I'm glad I bought it though! If it doesn't sink too quickly and the engine runs OK (I got a new carb float today) I plan on putting around a bit this summer before tearing things apart, I may even bring it to a messabout. <g>

Portland Wooden Boat Festival
I just got a message from Tom Carter of Rivers West about the festival up
in Portland. Unfortunately it conflicts with the Steam Up in Brooks. :o( Boats or ancient machinery, it's a tough choice. I'm not familiar with Portland (I try to stay away from the megalopolis), do any of you know where the launch ramp and festival are and how to get to them? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry to be so long in replying about the boat show. Its really taking off and turning into a big deal. Its the last weekend in July, the 28th and 29th at the south end of the new Eastside Esplanade. There is a public dock there where exibitors can tie up. The closest, handiest launch ramp is at Willamette Park in the Johns Landing area. I'm not sure how we will be handling parking for boat trailers for exibitors, but we have something worked out. If you want to come we would love to have you. this Year. Actually, I believe it's at the new waterfront park (where ever that is)on the east side of the river in downtown. I'm not sure if they still do the build/row-boat-across-river event, but it's pretty neat. My first woodenboat is the firecracker (a 9 foot rowing dory skiff-thingy), which is the boat that is built and rowed across the river in a day or maybe it's over the weekend. Some of the northern folks in the group might have more to offer about this event. It should be good, though.

Well, it looks like the messabout will be at Sawyer's Landing July 14th.
Somebody who knows how to get ahold of him (Jack?) should tell Scott Malvitch. Elk City

John, We had a nice day at the coast on the 4th. We took the Elk City
tour. We drove from Hy.20 to Elk City to Toledo. Stopped at the Elk City Park, what a nice place. Looks like a good place for a messabout for motor powered boats. Sounds like a neat trip your planning. Would be interested in going if the scheduling permits. I have all week- ends free in Aug. We are planning a garage sale on one of them, but haven't set a date yet. Stopped at Criteser's saw a boat called the "Foxglove", nice wooden sailboat, about a 15' one and narrow. Let me know when Elk City gets planned Dick

Glad you had a good trip. I've never been to Elk City, either by road or water. I tried the road from Highway 20 on my motorcycle once, but it was just too bad to be any fun on a street bike! Even though the road from Toledo is said to be much better, I think it's safe to say that Elk City is "off the beaten track". <g> They used to run steamboats up to Elk City in the old days, and my friend Bill (you met him at the Dexter messabout) wants to scout things out to see if he can get his Navy captain's gig up that far (draws 3' something), so we're going to take a tin skiff with an antique outboard up the river. Alas, it looks like the Elk City expedition may be either the day before or the day after the Yaquina Bay messabout. If it's as nice a trip as it looks like it'll be, it'll be worth doing again though. I'm pushing for doing the Elk City trip the day after the messabout so that any motorboating messabouters who'd like to tag along can have a chance. It's about ten river miles from the Port of Toledo launch ramp to Elk City. We'll be using an ancient 10 hp. motor, but we won't be in a hurry, and with three of us in the tin skiff it may not be too much of a speedboat anyway. The sailing skiff Foxglove that moors at Criteser's is a nice one alright! It looks like it started out as a Billy Atkins design, either Jasper (14') or Aunty Helen (16'), but has a slightly different decking arrangement. I'd like to get the boat and owner to our messabout, but I forgot to leave a note when I was there last week. If you wander over towards the restrooms at Critesers you'll stumble on a derelict sailing skiff under a pile of junk. It looks very much like something Pete Culler would have designed. I wonder if there's a connection to the Atkins skiff's owner?

Do you plan to spend the night at Sawyer's and go up to Elk City on Sunday. We are still planning to come, and Elk city trip sounds like fun. More incentive to bring Rapid Robert and Seaponies. (Got to see if any of them died over the winter.) What woud be your gestamated time frame for Elk City trip? The messabout is a one-day affair with the option of messing about Sunday if anybody wants to. In this case, the second day could be the Elk City trip. It's about ten miles from the Toledo ramp to Elk City, in our tin skiff we might be able to make that in hour and a bit if we hurried, but we'll be dawdling, even slowcoaches should be able to do the trip in a couple of hours each way, less with favorable tides. The tides will be running pretty weakly on the 16th, but we'll probably try to leave the ramp not much after nine to ride the flood up the river, high tide is a little before eleven at Toledo. I suppose we'll hang around Elk City for a bit and have lunch then head back. I'm going to stay at Sawyer's Landing Friday and Saturday nights.

You've got a one track mind-- full of oars! <g> The captain's gig in question is an ex-US Navy motorboat: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MessaboutW/files/Gig.jpg I believe recreational bay crabbing goes on year 'round. The crabs don't like too much fresh water, so it makes sense that they'd be happy in the summer, but I really don't know much about crabbing. Sawyer's rents crab rings, so there must be some crabs around. I've pretty well got the outboard bracket worked out for Pickle, so even if the tin skiff with the antique outboard doesn't show up we can try the Elk City trip Sunday.

I have really been loking forward to our get-together at Sawyer's
Landing on the 14th., especially, since it would be the first salt water launching for "Wee Lass", but I am afraid some family complications have arisen and I will not be able to attend. I hope that the weather will be a typical coastal, blue sky and breezy day, and that a good time will be had by all. Footloose? John, Alas, I wish it were but, "Wee Lass" is my Triad. The present status of the "Footloose" is, I have all the frames, stem, transom & chines assembled on the building jig. Next step is fairing the whole bloody thing and installing sides and bottom. Looks like it is a cadidate for next spring or summer launching. John T.

Hope you folks had a good time.
I went to the Dr on Wednesday, and he sugested against doing any boating for a while. Too much chance of moving my head in the wrong direction. It's been a long ordeal for me already, and I don't want to screw things up now after all this time. Really not ready to have to do it all again. Dr said I was improving as to plan, unfortunately he did not tell me at last visit that "Plan" involved me wearing neck brace for another three months. Guess he thought I could handle it better if he just told me three months at a time. Just hope this is the last three months. The good news is he told me I didn't have a screw loose, despite what some might say. I was really looking forward to trip to Elk City, but I guess it will still be there when I am finally able. Please give me a rundown on how it went. I find I'm having to live a lot vicariosly these days. I am getting better, just have to force myself to take it easy and heal. I guess I didn't know how serious fusing cevical vertebrate is. This to will pass. Sorry for not being able to make it. Pat Patteson Molalla, Oregon

Elk City Expedition
I've had no explanation so far why my friends with the tin skiff didn't
show up to haul me to Elk City Sunday, but the boat's owner had to get his antique outboard in shape, put a timing belt in his car, set up the stoves for Chez Ray at the Country Fair, and who knows what else before the trip, and just didn't get it all done in time. Now we're talking about doing the trip next Saturday, the 21st. I hope it works this time! <g> I'll keep you informed. Anyone who wants to tag along is welcome, if you don't have a motorboat maybe you can bum a ride with someone who has one (the tin skiff will have a boatload already though).
