Hi All. We will be hosting a memorial for David West on Sunday December 6th at 11:00 AM. We will have an open mic for people to share their thoughts about Dave. At 12:30 the family will join a boat parade down to Craigy Point where we will stop and say a few words, then return to the boat shop. We will have the Waterfront Recreation and Education Center building open throughout the day for folks to mingle and share time and stories. We will also have a small amount of food and beverages for folks. Please respond here and let us know if you are attending this memorial. We have limited space on the boats during the boat parade, but if folks have their own (motor) boats we encourage them to join in. The rain cover is done !!
I bought a 48 in. square waterproof patio table cover that just came in yesterday. Just today I did the fitting well enough to cover Surprises whole cockpit, with a good sitting room under the beige cover that covers the whole open area. One detail is I couldn't cut the existing bimini top bows enough to do a deck level fit. The other side of that is there will be some air flow under the cover for circulation, and I don't camp on board now anyhow.
Maybe it beats heck out of carrying a full boat cover, and might be able to be added on under way for spring showers. Just flip it over the bimini to install, and wrap a couple corner knots. Maybe I can add an entry hatch later as time permits, or I can get somebody to do a bit of sewing. I put in eyelets to snug the corners tightly, and the color matches the afterdeck oak pretty well, oh yeah -- the table cover was $46.00 with freight through amazon, nylon cord and some grommets extra. Sure helps to have a bimini top in place, but with some thought, a simple bolted and removable 2X2 frame could be added to fit, and sized to fit the basic yard tool box, BBQ fire pit, or like mine a table square cover for a weatherproof cover on the cheap. Gettin' er done to see if I need more detailing, byeee !! ----- Cal

John - agreed. Both engines were working fine. It was a political decision. The brass figured people would wonder why they were decommissioning a boat that could make it all the way to Ilwaco under it's own power so they had the boats towed. It’s just plain sad how it all transpired. There was supposed to be a decommissioning ceremony but it never happened. It is what it is.

I've known Jim long before I knew the Coots were around. We met at the Toledo Boat Show he was sitting in Big Blue. Such a soft spoken man and a lover of boats and the water. Hi Jove, Well to start with is I'm 65 almost 66 and I'm not a racer. I want to cruise and the challenges are enough. I thought I'd be able to do that but you have to be on your toes and able to shift from side when you jibe. The boom has plenty of head room and putting the sailes in the hollow mast is easy also. I don't move as quickly as needed and felt uneasy in sailing her. There's a main sail and jib so you need to be ready when the boat wants to. The rudder is detached and a line that needs to be fastened to keep it in place. I'm glad you're interested and she needs to go to someone who would let her fly. Elaine

Hi Elaine, I probably don't need another boat, but I am still interested, and curious about the enterprise. Can you tell me more about what you're impressions of it are? From what I've read it is a fairly racey design, but not as highly strung as modern boats in a similar weight class. It is a bit smaller and lighter than other 2 person race dinghies. And it has quite a lot of sail area. You said it is not the boat for you? Why is that, does it have a low swinging boom, or otherwise uncomfortable to sail. I am 34, and many of the people I sail with are nimble enough and this boat sounds fun, But I am interested in what makes it not work for you. Thanks, -Jove

Larimar is a sporty little boat, not as fast as some of the newer designs, but fun for somebody younger and nimbler. I suppose she's a TR-3 compared to a modern Porsche. I think a TR-3 is more fun than a fancy new Porsche, even if the German wonder would leave it in the dust. :o) So maybe the comparison doesn't hold water... <g> The modern go-fast small boats do look like fun for athletic youngsters.

Enterprise race sailing dinghy

Hi all, I'm in need of selling my Enterprise and wanted to see if any Coot would be interested. She was made be Sears back in 1969 and fully restored by Michael Bogoger. I did maintenance to her about 3 years ago put oar mounts and had her in the Toledo Show a couple of times. Her tags don't expire till December on 2022. I like her but she's not the boat for me. Here's some pictures asking $600.00 and she comes with her trailer and never had a motor. Thanks, Elaine

Next Step, Funding a Project
Or, call it recycling !! I was looking at items no longer used. I dug out two RCBS reloading ammo presses, and a shotgun shell reloader. Most popular gun and shotgun calibers, with all the bullets, powder, and items to own a really complete reloading setup. Then I found several archery outfits, all tuned and ready for target or hunting, with accuracy notes, maybe 4 well known classic bows. I even have some guns still left over. There ought to be enough stuff there that could generate enough bucks for a new project boat, or whatever. Maybe buy some of that with gold coins, gem stones or related jewelers items. I sold my Lincoln continental coupe that way, and the Triumph Spitfire, so that can be done.
Probably others like me are casually looking for a different boat, motorcycle etc, - as those are my primary interests, will find takers to help shuffle stuff around without any, or probably a small amount, of cash to get it evened out. The point of this is to look at what moves your project along. If you have good tradeable items, sometimes you can get closer to that other motor, the boat, moto, or trailer you'd like. Maybe just move out what you don't need. I have even thought about a mini trailer for my Toyota. No way to find out unless you mention or list items. I just found one reloading tools buyer on a web site, gotta watch that for scams, but one way, listing on eBay is another. I have made over $10 k as an established seller on eBay so far, but eBay doesn't do guns, for instance, that's a different site I have sold on very well, and which I will use again. There are creative ways to fund your obsession(s), just look at what you don't need anymore, and trade out --- Cal
