Re: Pond at Wooden Boat Show

It's not your fault, Andy. A little kid got into the pond last year when nobody was looking, so they figure they'll have to have somebody looking All The Time if there's gonna be a pond. You couldn't have done that, and wouldn't have wanted to anyway. It'll take a team of vigilant watchpersons constantly on duty in the daytime, and probably a way to kid-proof the pond overnight. Maybe next year.

The consensus of the committee was that with better advanced planning, it may be an option next year, but not this year.

So, for this year there will be an area set aside between the pump out station and the next finger on the transient dock.  Tom Murphy will be doing his kayak demonstrations there and the rest of the time will be reserved for model boat sailing.  This is the area the Retired Old Guys Sailing Club use for sailing their DF-65s throughout the winter.  It is plenty well protected and a person can access the rest of the slough for more open water if they so choose.  The retired guys sail mostly in the upper slough near the observation pier.  We've sailed our boats in winds up to 20 mph without any problems.  There will also be a chase boat out on the water most of the time in case anybody's boat runs astray.

I'm copying the DF-65 fleet owners so they too can join in the fun. It is too late now, but we might want to schedule specific times for model boat regattas during the show, either racing or just sailing and motoring around all at the same time.

We are looking forward to a great weekend and hope those of you who have models ready to go can bring them along and join in the fun.

Show Rides as Possible

We will be at the show, no boat but there for the fun.  When I'm around I will be available for free taxl service in the area.  So, probably the gold 2017 Ford fusion will be our car for offering rides when we're around.  I will try to cover the launch area to show site, so just give me a hoot and you'll have a lift  to wherever..  Will try to add a few things for giveaway, or to the garbage cans, depends on space after our packing stuff for the motel.

Just wave, or get my attention, I don't hear cell phones very well but John has my cell number.  Look for the car or my smiling face usually on the dock area, ----   Cal

Geodesic Airolite Boat Coming Akong

The Retired Old Guys continue to make progress on my Classic 12. They got the Toledo Boatyard to spray paint the frame -- it turns out brush painting a Geodesic Airolite frame takes Lots of labor. When I stopped by Thursday they were putting on the stickum tape to hold on the skin:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkohnen/albums/72157706889347291

They may get the skin on this Thursday, or maybe during the show...

Re: Thinking of making some 1/4 scale models of skin-on-frame

Good boats to model. For those not familiar with them, the Chuckanut and IGO are Dave Gentry designs:

http://www.gentrycustomboats.com/

The Yaquina Canoe's plans can be found on the Boathouses' page:

http://toledocommunityboathouse.com/plans/yaquina/

Since model boats will be so much cheaper, with less chance of drowning people, you might want to play with adapting some existing wooden boat designs to skin on frame. There are a lot of nice boats that would probably make good SOF boats. If one of your models turns out good maybe you can talk the Retired Old Geezers into building a full-size one. <g>

Dan Pence adapted a St. Lawrence River skiff to SOF and won the Shipyard Raid:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkohnen/3530644948/in/album-72157618038717621/

The last time I talked to Brian Schultz he had a SOF Delaware Ducker. See attachments.

Just dropping a note to remind ya all that pulled pork will be on tap. I’m thinking 5:30-6:00 is a good time with all the activities going on.

Curtis Salgado headlining the amphitheater!!

If someone’s in contact with him, invite him to the food.

I have the pork, coleslaw, and some buns.

BT George said he’s bringing sweet corn.

As is the norm bring plates and utensils.

See ya all there.
