New MinnK. Prop -- 2 vs. 3 blades
lendercal@...
Lapstrake flat bottom, same motor, same crew Myles S. & I, AM light wind. Fresh Interstate 27s. For those who want the short version, I liked the extra low speed "grunt", and wind control. The top end is still dictated by weight, hull shape, and -- wait for it !! -- waterline length to hull speed ratios. Not much surprise, ONE mph so can't waterski !! Not done on the same day, but conditions were pretty close. Trips were about like a one way from Paulina lodge to the coots camp, not sailing Now a bit more, as top speed went from 3.8 ( stock), to 4.3mph (3 blade) ---- up/down wind average Cruise MPH on stock prop 2.5 mph, to 3.2 mph (3 blade) --- Half way between 50 & 75% power set. We did notice smoother performance to wind direction at 60 % == trolling speed, perhaps with a lighter boat or less weight, the speed difference would be greater. Battery life, that was way good with the MKota Optimizer, pulse drive. About 1.5 hours each trip, still didn't use enough to make a difference in rpm when switched between battery A and the B, should have noticed some difference if there was a significant power draw. Coot burgee flying over Hilo
Brandon
I finally posted an article about our trip from San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, to Hilo, Hawaii, on my blog. The Log of Hagoth: Sailing from Mexico to Hilo, Hawaii Thought you guys would want to know the coot flag is flying on the Big Island. We've been here more than a month, but we're headed to the Kona side in the next day or two. There's a wood ketch called Love from Oregon City moored in the mouth of the river here. Anyone know about it? It looks well kept up. Joe, is that your friend? Brandon SV Oceanus, Columbia 43 Reed's Bay, Hilo, Hawaii

At least you did not say "Fern Ridge". Looks pretty tall to go under the power lines otherwise if you buy it you can park it at my house.

"This boat can go back to work carrying passengers, can be used as a floating restaurant, could be converted into a really nice live-aboard, or would also make a very good office. Vessel has been in fresh water so there is very little corrosion. Vessel can be brought down the lock system to Portland, Oregon or trucked to the Puget Sound. "

How's it goin' Sparkin' & steamin' Joe Lawton ??
lendercal@...
Hey, Joe !! Now that things have settled in a bit, how about a phone call like this Monday morning, earlier is better ?? Asked a couple times about new phone, address etc. but didn't find the reply. Are you doing Toledo this year (for starters) and would you be interested in doing some boating with me trying out several EV power and prop questions ?? Myles Swift and I have been out a few times, but others are welcome of course. When the weather cooperates, we get out there with the boat that fits the company and mood. Looking towards a visit at some point, ---- Thanks, Cal

A Visit to the Museum in Coos Bay
While in the Bay Area the other day I stopped by the new Coos History Museum, just opened last fall. It's a real nice museum with some interesting stuff:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkohnen/albums/72157668057731153 They've got a couple of our friend Jerry Alvey's boats but, alas, no Cooscraft. Well worth a visit. http://www.cooshistory.org/ -- John (jkohnen@...) I would permit no man, no matter what his color might be, to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him. (Booker T. Re: [MessaboutW] News
This link should work, but you'll have to answer a questionnaire to see the article. Nice to see Dave's boat get some ink and to see the Coot burgee flying in a Jim's local fishwrapper. Sounds like Dave's family had quite a party!

Over the holidays there was a picture of David Bray in the Democrat Herald news paper. I've tried to find it and post it here, but I can't find it. Maybe one of you could try. Cool pict, even had the coot flag. Jim Cooper

Bob Launches a Scamp, and Andy Tests a Corky
Here are some of the photos I took the other day at Fern Ridge. Bob L launched his Scamp, Waveguide, for the first time, and Andrew sailed a Corky:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/jkohnen/albums/72157670840362955 All of Bob's boats have "wave" in their names. In case you're wondering what a "waveguide" is, they're things that conduct radio waves using magic, or at least that's what it seems like to those of us who aren't radioheads. ;o) What us Wavelengths sail number, Bob? Can you share the text of your christening speech with us? I thought it was real good. Wavelength looked real nice out on the water! The corky worked better than I expected... -- John (jkohnen@...) Re: [MessaboutW] Lots o lashing at the Boathouse this weekend
I got hung up down in the Bay Area until too late to get some lashing done in Toledo. Had to settle for Carolina style BBQ on the way home instead of Pig Feathers. <g> Too much BSing with Pete and Mike at the Coos Bay Boatbuilding Center, BSing with that old fisherman crabbing on the dock, visiting the new history museum and BSing witht the gals at the counter... But I didn't find anybody to BS with at the shipyard. <shrug>

Lots o lashing - 4 stringers for one boat, 6 for the other, 19 lashings for each stringer, 190 all together. PLUS modifying and testing the Corky. Should be a GREAT weekend. Come on down and enjoy the fun.

https://outdoorsupplyinc.com/float-tubes/3-pack-huge-44-new-truck-inner-tube-river-tubes-snow-tubes.html I tried to have one rule - just one. The only rule was "It has to look substantially like a Corky" But no - people built shells around then, want two, three, or more tubes, want to use any kind of flotation, etc.

Seatte Boat show -- great fun
lendercal@...
Found the E-boat people at the show. Good sources, sat and chatted about systems, the twin motor wood hull ski boat - Fabulous - a wood hulled, cabin rig with a Fork lift motor - Very comfy cruiser- and the e- speedboat part of the power boat racing club, cool hand built outdrives. Really glad we went, next trip there is a boat & breakfast deal, yep. One entrant might be coming down this way, I'm hoping for a freeway lakes, Fern Ridge, Dorena, or similar cruise for a day, two boats or more if we can get a day messabout, more on that later. I made arrangements that if anything happens to me, all my boats and shop goes to the Wood boat house there, as a donation. Now I can build without wondering what happens next. If you give while you live, you know where it goes, eh ?? However, the inflatable and another kayak, will go on sale, probably the sail boat after this electric is done and proven out. Glassing the bottom maybe tomorrow, then paint, getting closer. The boat to Lummi Island for dinner -- picture hand smoked alder salmon, done on wood sticks over a pit fire, with all the extras you could ever hold. Then picture having them try to give seconds, thirds, on all that very fine salmon. With this was an excellent story teller of tribal legends both ways, cool. Then I get back, and find that a neighbor has a commercial machine shop close to me. looks like maybe I can get some engineered components for the new build. Having lunch soon over that one. Night Fell, time to nap out, bye Coots, ---- Cal
