I think we are talking about VHS (video tape) rather than VHF (marine
radio).

For John K. Just wanted to be sure you got my link transfer on making
DVD's. Let me know.

Anyone else who has VHF boating stuff should get in touch with John
for transfers. Then I have a portable 12v color tv flat panel where we
can view DVD's and CD pics of our stuff at Messabouts.

Could be some kind of movie. One never knows what will happen at
Mississippi Pizza.

For those who didn't make the event, the movie had no sound track. All the
dialog was in American Sign Language. There was an interpreter who narrated
the dialog for non-signers.

My wife Jan is sorry she missed the fun. She thought it would be a
bunch of old boat guys sitting around talking about boats. Little
did she know she would miss a world premier!

The band was unusual and quite good.

This new digital stuff is way to far cool ! As I sit here (after
installing all my Christmas presents) I am doing my e-mail, watching
the Oregon/Oaklahoma game, drinking gin and tonic, eating smoked
herring and cheese balls with crackers; I could even talk on the phone
if anyone wants.

I even have my little LCD/TV/MONITOR/DVD PLAYER pugged into my
computer theater surround sound system with bass thumper and I could
play some hot rock too. But at my age I can only take so much
stimulation.

It should be noted that Gorilla Glue and its clones as well as the
tightbonds say water proof on the frount but water resistant in the
fine print READ THE FINE PRINT and so may cause truble bellow the water
line. I have been useing Mass FLAG mixing in cheap clear plastic
tumblers ($2 for 60)and cheap art foam paint brushes ($1 for 5 on sale)
for gluing up ribs and stringers. Some paper cups are wax coated and
can cause problems. When small batches are required this workes well
for me.

Sounds like a great plan. Too bad your genius didn't see the e-mail until
the day after the event. Maybe I can concoct a time machine to back us all
up a day. The Flounders Day in Megalopolis had some extraordinary
characteristics. I will wait to see who else has commented.

Here's the deal. It looks like we have perhaps 3 Flounders DAy Pizza
Bashes. Being the Social Pychologist I am, I suggest that Mr. Frank
Maybrey get off his duff and hook us all up via some sort of internet
or satellite or cable deal where we can all have our meets and share
on big screen real time.

I know time is short, but Frank is a genious, and has many
connections ! How is this paid for ? There are all sorts of vendors of
marine stuff, like West Marine, who would jump at a chance to
instigate this sort of multigeographical digital messabout.

If not this year, maybe next. What say Mr. Frank ?

Paul,

I would like to help. Do you have a schedule of your plans for the
week yet? I can not come every day but could come for several half
days at least. Pesky job of mine gets in the way.

Steve Miller
Portland, OR
Here's my build schedule:

Sunday afternoon:
Deliver wood, have kids setup saw horses and work tables.

Monday:
The bottom of these boats is made from 4 pieces 1/2 ply scarfed
together. That's because it's wider than 48in. So on Monday we'll cut
the 4 bottom pieces for each boat and scarf the first half (2 sets of
2) of the bottoms. We'll also butt joint the sides and cut out all the
other parts from templates. We'll epoxy coat all the parts we can at
the end of the day.

I have a scarfing jig that I use with a 10" skill saw that will let me
scarf 8 foot panels. It's very cool and much faster than any other
method I've ever seen. We have 40 cuts to make plus laying them up.
Even at 5 minutes a cut, that's over three hours of scarfing.

Tuesday:
We'll scarf the bottoms together and finish up any work from Monday.
We'll also cut wire and be prepared to stitch together on Wednesday. I
expect this to be the shortest day.

Wednesday:
Loft and cut bottom from fully scarfed sheet. Stitch the sides,
transom, bulkheads (2), put masking tape on seams, flip boats, fillet
and tape inside seams of boat. Epoxy coat inside of boat. This will be
the longest day.

Thursday:
Flip boat, cut and grind off wire ties, round chines, fill with
epoxy/filler and tape all seams. Epoxy coat outside of boat.

Friday:
Right boats and install seats, bow & stern tanks/seats, gunwales.

Boats go home on Friday where kids can sand and paint on their own.

So Greg and Steve, you can see that it's an ambitious project. I know
though that just having some adult role models come in and encourage
the kids will go a long way. Wednesday's the day I'm worried about. It
took me a good 6 hours to get mine sample boat stitched together
working alone.

;-) Paul

Flounders Day North/South

Craig Merkel <quetsal48@...>

From the pictures it looks as though you folks up North were having quite a party! Things were much more serious down here but alas no pictures to prove it.
We did make sure that the women attending had some company for the occasion, though it looks as though Kate was well entertained.
I think that, since it was Flounders (Founders) Day that we should refer to John as The Flounder. What say you all?
You really gotta share that joke fellas...

Hey,

Thanks Dan, for chronicling the event. "Forgot his name" is my old
friend Jerry (don't ask how old, he gets SO testy). He was cobuilder -
with Colin, Devin & I - of Sisu. And thanks to Lon for the nautical
and nice Santa card. So... I missed the question too, and the answer.
What IS a strapon? And how did Kate end up describing it to Quinn?
Sorry I missed that moment. That was my only complaint about the
evening. For an old fart like me, who's spent too much time around
loud tools, it was too noisy to really carry on coherent boating
conversations. Otherwise, it was a fun evening. I was a little late
getting to the shop this morning though, and I don't think I'll need
to eat again till tomorrow... or maybe the next day.

Cheers,
David Graybeal

The caption "Kate in tears" pretty much sums up my thought on the movie. I did miss his question though. It sure made for an interesting evening however. The pizza was really good and we settled on an official wave for Flounders Day. You can see that in one of the shots too. Just remember which way the flounder tail is oriented before you wave.
