Wow.  When I took that book home from the junior high library (Great Grain Race), it must have been a brand new volume—1956.  Also, an excellent year for Chevys.  I read everything about going to sea that I could lay my hands on, in those days.  Somehow, the drama and adventure of Dana and Conrad trumped those land-locked tomes we had to wade through in class, like Giants in the Earth and My Antonia.  I do wonder if 6th or 7th graders read Jack London any more.  Great the pity, if not.
