Issue ewith 500E--transferring design and also deleting them

Kathy Strabel

Hello Group--I am having trouble getting a design from my thumb drive into my machine.  It is a new design to me, DL'd from a reputable design source. I have copied the design into the EMBF folder on my thumb drive--not the EMB folder. I can see that it is listed there in EMBF. However, When I place the thumb drive in the port, and scroll through the list of designs, it does not show up on the machine's screen. A bunch of other designs are already there, which I expected.  I have looked in all the different hoop size's pages on the machine's screen, and the design is simply not there.

I have deleted the design from my computer several times and re- DL'd it, each time verifying that it shows by file name in the EMBF folder, and deleting previous ones.   Does this mean that my machine's memory is full?  If so, how do I go about deleting some files to make room for new ones? On page 35 in the manual, it gives a few words about deleting a pattern, but when I follow that, the design remains in the machine's screen. All it says is to press on the pattern to delete,   then press the delete key to delete. But it does not delete.  Should the first instruction be "press on the pattern on the screen to SELECT, and then go on to pressing the delete key to delete the pattern (design)? In my case, nothing happens either way I try it.

About 99% of my thumb drive is Free Space, very little of the 4 GB of my thumb drive is used, if that has any bearing on my questions.  It is a thumb drive that I have used numerous times with great success. But today---it does not cooperate.

So, my questions are these:
1. Why does the DL'd and transferred copy of design not show on my machine's screen even though it is residing in the EMBF folder?
2. How do I go about deleting designs that I no longer want in my machine?  Even doing as described on page 56 --Deleting a File or Folder---nothing seems to happen

What am I missing????
Thanks--be safe and healthy out there!

Is it possible that the design needs to be unzipped?  That’s the only thing I can suggest checking.

Kath:  Sorry for your frustration.  Been there and done that.  Can you check the size of the design.  I have had designs not show up if they are bigger than the largest hoop.  If the design extension and size are correct ...... it is gremlins playing with you ...

Frustrating isn’t it?  Your machine memory isn’t affected by what’s on the USB, when transferring it from the USB to the machine, you’re not actually placing it in the memory.  Did you unzip the design before transferring it?  Also is it in the .JEF format?  It could be that it is oriented in the hoop wrongly.  It could be that the machine is seeing it as too big, perhaps it just needs turning, but you will need software to turn it.  Have you looked at it on the computer in Horizon Link or some other software?

If you are seeing the other designs in the same EMBF folder then my guess would be that there is something about this design that the machine does not like.  Usually, I have found this to be a size or layout issue.  I think this is because many of the commercial designs are initially digitized for the Brother/Babylock market and converted to JEF.  Because of how the hoops feed, this can lead to the design being off by 90 degrees (requiring it to be rotated before the machine will recognize them).

Also, you may want to recheck the actual size of the design.  Janome (bless their heart) sets their hoop proportions different from what many companies are using as a “standard” and significantly vary the larger hoop sizes on different models of machines.  This might be due to patent restrictions, but it can be irritating when the commercial design is defined as 8”x8” and your hoop is 7.9”x7.9”.  In this case, you have to slightly resize the design in separate software and save it to a different name and put the smaller design on the USB for the machine to find it.

I have actually created myself a size conversion cheat sheet (in mm and inches) so once I have the actual design size, I can see which hoops and machines it will work on.

Thank you for the quick responses to my question re: trouble loading a design from thumb drive to the machine. I will try the suggestions and see if those will fix the problem.  I did post 2 questions, and no one seemed to answer the second one, so any suggestions would be appreciated--that question was : How do I delete designs from my machine that I do not want in there anymore?  How do I check how much room is used up in the machine's memory?  The manual gives very little info on that.
Thank you--and be safe and healthy out there---and----Happy Stitching!!

Kathy,
In answer to your second question.  As someone else indicated, the machine doesn’t automatically save a permanent copy of the design to the local machine memory when you are doing a stitch out.  It just keeps it as a temporary file until you have exited the design.  You have to save it to the machine intentionally by using the save icon while in edit mode.  That said, if you have saved some designs (such as wording or monograms you created on the machines) and want to now delete them, the process is pretty straightforward.

Pages 55 and 56 in the manual cover this process (saving and deleting) for USB files. To look at the machine memory rather than the USB, just choose the machine icon to the left of the USB icon.
Once you select the machine icon, it will also display on the right of the USB icon how much of the available 4MB of space you have used for your saved design files.  Then you can go into the folder that has the files (either Embf or another folder name).  Touch the little trash can at the top of the screen and then select which designs you want to delete.

Actually, I appreciate your re-asking the question because I had to look at the machine to verify exactly how it worked and discovered how to change the display so I can see longer file names in entirety (by selecting the rectangular tile display rather than the default small squares display).

Hi Kathy,

Stitching a design using a USB drive does not save the design to the machine. You will not find it in your machine unless you saved it there. If you need to delete a design off your USB drive you can do that on your computer. Use the Easy Design software that came with your machine.

If the other designs are there in your thumbdrive, perhaps you need to see if there is a second page?  I always forget to look at that!  regards, Mary
