Bobbin winding problems

Anne Stoye

I am currently having problems winding bobbins.  The needle mechanism does not fully disengage and the needle initially goes up and down very fast while the bobbin starts winding, then the needle stays down and the bobbin winding becomes painfully slow.  This has happened before and I seem to recall that the repair man/excellent dealer told me that it was a problem with gearing.  Am I doing something wrong or making it worse by carrying on?  Can I do anything to improve the position or should it go for repair ASAP?  The fault started off as intermittent and now seems to be happening most of the time.

Advice would be welcome.

With thanks,

Anne

It's not anything you are doing. What's happened is that the bobbin winder clutch mechanism is not disengaging as it should. This is almost always an issue of lubrication, and it tends to happen after several years of use. It will need a service, and when you take it in do be sure to mention this. But it's not urgent. In the meantime, before winding a bobbin place a spool (reel) underneath the needle clamp. This will stop the needle from going up and down, and will prevent injury to you. If it screeches in protest, that means the service should be sooner rather than later.

Thank you very much for your helpful response.  Best wishes to you both,
