Thanks for all the chair suggestions & reviews. The bungee chair sounds pretty cool. I live in a large metro area and (after research) I can try them out for size. Available for in-store try out are: Horn, Koala, and the Bungee chair.  A friend mine has one similar (no backrest) to the Arrow. Sat on it many times while fixing her sewing machines and never paid any attention on fit & comfort.

Thanks,

Mahjongg

I use a fabric chair I bought from a second-hand office furniture business that sells the furniture for charity.  There I could try things out and find one that was suitable.

It cost £18, has wheels, no arms, and is height and back adjustable enough so I can sit comfortably at my sewing desk, which is set at the height of 25ins (I'm only 4ft 11ins so I need a low desk so I can touch the floor and feel comfortable sewing).

The desk puts my 15000 at just the right height for me to be comfortable with the foot control on the floor and my chair puts me at a height where I'm looking at the needle rather than the arm of the machine getting in the way of my vision.

It's also adjustable enough if I want to sit at my cutting table, which is at a height of 30ins - - just right for me when standing to cut out -  but also fine when I want to sit and use one of my hand cranks when obviously I don't need to reach a foot control on the floor.

It's the most comfortable chair I have ever had and I won't part with it for anything.

Fiona, I got both of your replies/posts.  I sometimes don't get posts, and especially in other groups, but I see they were posted when I read through the other replies in the other posts.

I'm looking at the Koala chair...hoping to see one at a quilt show or something.  There are two coming up near enough to here that I might get to go, and I'm hoping there's a vendor there with one. I'm glad you mentioned it's height range, although I did see a review that said it went to drafting chair/cutting table height...which sounds great.

Hi All,
It seems the way the group works ie posting/replying has changed and I am not sure my messages are going through. I just answered the Chair topic but do not see my reply. Can someone let me know if this message actually shows up. I noticed I do not receive group messages very often anymore. Same is happening with my genealogy group.
Koala chair is the one I love if it did not go through.

Thanks

Fiona

I purchased the Koala Chair love it!! It has the largest height adjustment of any chair I could find. I needed a chair for sewing but also I crochet large afghans so wanted one that would make crocheting at my sewing table comfortable. worth every penny.

I have a bungee chair from The Container Store (online, there's not one near me).  I bought one without arms for sewing. The height adjusts, it doesn't take up a lot of room, and, most importantly, it's the most comfortable chair I've ever used. I bought one with arms for my desk.

Another vote for the Bungee chair from the Container Store. I've had mine 2 years now and it's very comfortable. Also light and easy to take to retreats.

Don’t laugh but my favorite chair for sewing is the bungee office chair from The Container Store. I have been using it for the past 5 or 6 years including taking it to quilt retreats. It looks weird but is very comfortable. I also use it to sit at my loom when I am weaving. It is $179, comes in multiple colors and shipping is free.   The chair generally goes on sale several times a year.

Thanks everyone. I will go to the local quilt shops and try them for fit.  Hope they have them on display.

Thanks again,

Hit a Koala from the local quilt shop. They were having demo sales. I like it.

My personal opinion only, but I really love my Koala Sew Comfort Chair.  I have tried using a regular office chair.  But I am short and find that the seat pan of the chairs I can afford usually sit me too far back from the machine (computer use ergonomics being different than sewing ergonomics). I end up just sitting on the front edge of the chair to reach the machine and pedal and might as well be on a stool.  I also find that the Koala is more height adjustable than most office chairs.  This is important for my embroidery machine setup where I really want to be able to look down onto the bed of the machine.

Another of the things I really like about my Koala chair over my prior sewing chair is the back height and angle adjustment.

Anyone have a suggestion for a decent sewing chair? Need rolling casters, easily adjustable seat height, preferably with a back rest. Been searching the internet but they are all over the map. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

I replaced my Horn sewing chair which looked like an office chair with an Arrow sewing chair.  This chair is smaller and the back gives me the lumbar support I need.  I also like it’s smaller size and I’m not banging it into other furniture like my old one.

I've been through 3 in as many years and still looking. I purchased the pricey Bernina chair on high praises from a couple of guild sisters. Nope. While the back rest is great, the cushioning in the seat isn't even comparable to a decent office chair. I use it, but have to use an additional memory foam seat cushion.

Make sure it’s a good one, especially if you sit and sew for many hours.  Don’t buy off the internet unless you really have to.  Better to go in and try before you buy frankly.  We bought a couple before the pandemic and they weren’t very good, bought off the internet.  We went to replace mine, and we went to the shop to try it.  Much more comfortable that the one we bought originally.

Could you go to an office furniture store and try some out?  And look at second-hand office furniture too.
