If You Are Considering Purchasing a Janome CM17
I am writing this because I want you to be informed if you choose to purchase a CM17.
Just so you know these are the Janome machines that I have purchased and used or am still using.
- 525 Sewist
- Don’t remember the model but it is a felting machine
- Don’t remember the model but it had “Marie Osmond’s” name on it – It was a lemon and I returned it for store credit
- Horizon 7700
- Memory Craft 9400
- Memory Craft 15000
- Memory Craft 6700
- HD9
- M7
- Memory Craft 550
- CoverPro 3000
I eagerly purchased my CM17 on May 18, 2022 and these are the issues that I have experienced so far that are still outstanding. Most of the time the issues below happen randomly which is infuriating. I plan on taking my machine into my dealer hopefully this weekend.
- Feed dogs drop and don’t come back up.
- Lag when trying to start sewing after stopping (issue introduced with the Version 1.01 update) NOTE: Janome seems to think this is ok and there is nothing wrong.
- You can’t customize settings without it having some other undesirable result. Whenever there is an issue the standard reponse is to switch back to default settings.
- When using a normal straight stitch (NOT quilting, basting, or embroidery), I stop sewing the feed dogs drop and when I try to start sewing again it only does one stitch and then it stops and will only do one stitch and stop. I have to turn the machine off before it acts normal again.
- The knee lifter seems to work it way out of the hole that is goes in much more so that I have seen with any of the other Janome machines that I have purchased.
- I hear a beeping and hesitation when starting to sew again after stopping.

Thank you Pam for letting me know. I never buy a new machine when it first comes out. I usually wait at least a year for them to get the bug out of them. This one though is out of my price range and I didn't feel it had enough upgrades to merit that kind of price.; My 15,000 will stay my baby.

Janome is a great company that stands behind their machines.

I especially like the hoop attachment on the side. I find I can do small t-shirts as well as my own much more accessible than with the top hoop attachment as on the old machines. And am enjoying the ability to have a bigger hoop. (I had gotten away from embroidery when I bought a Cricut and this machine is getting me back to my first love!)

You can bet I have learned my lesson this time. Going forward I will wait a year if I choose to buy a newly redesigned machine. I will also no longer depend on a manufacture’s previous reputation and spend time at the dealer doing thorough testing.
It’s funny, I had the 15000 and never really used all the features. It was only after I got the CM17 and started playing with it that I realized – I could have saved myself a ton of money and aggravation.
It was because I did not utilize my 15000 that I made it a point to delve into my CM17 and start to understand it’s capabilities.

Very well stated.
I will no longer be the first in line to purchase. I will wait, do thorough testing at the dealer, and read “real” buyer reviews before I purchase.

As a techie…retired or not…I stay off ‘the bleeding edge’ and do not ‘chase technology’ except professionally and for test systems only!!! I was very sad to read the list of issues. It’s not a machine that can replace my 15000 because I need the free arm, but I’m sure many people don’t. But the worst part is that first run issues can mar the company’s reputation and send customers elsewhere and/or at least cost them sales. Depending on the issues, that can be dreadful for a company and I think Janome has, generally speaking, a lot of very solid products so I hope those issues are limited to one or a very few machines that just didn’t come off the assembly line ‘fully cooked’ and ready to serve. At least they are replacing the machine, so I hope the replacement is perfect!!!
