Madeira Glamour Thread

I would like to use Madeira Glamour thread which is a 12wgt metallic. When I try to use it I get a thread nest and the needle strikes the bobbin case and the bobbin case lifts and jams the machine. I have tried using differnent needle sizes and reduced the needle tension. I am using the yellow bobbin case. I also turned off the thread cutter because I thought the thread might be too thick for the cutter. Nothing has helped.

Metallic thread is always challenging, but 12wt makes it much more so. Normal embroidery thread is 40wt. The "weight" of a thread is based on how many kilometers it takes to make a kilogram. The heavier (thicker) the thread, the smaller the number. So your thread is more than 3 times heavier than normal. I'm not sure that any needle would have a large enough eye for this heavy of a thread to pass through. It would be more suitable for reverse bobbin work, where the thread is wound (by hand) on a bobbin, then put in the machine but NOT in the bobbin tension. Ordinary thread is used in the needle and you stitch decorative stitches with the fabric wrong side up. It's very likely that the first nest that spun the bobbin case also damaged the case and/or hook race. That sets the stage for trouble every time you try after that. Remove the bobbin case and check it very closely top and bottom for any gouges, nicks, or scratches. While it's out do the same for the metal basket (hook race) that it rides in, paying close attention to the narrow edge. When a needle breaks it often inflicts damage there. I would invite others who have used this thread to voice their experience.

I haven’t used that exact same 12 wt thread in the needle but have experience with two other 12 wt threads.
Sulky 12 wt cotton with #16 needle works fine, but Superior SewSassy 12 wt cotton I can’t get to sew at all no matter the needle. I use it in the bobbin as bobbin work and run it through the blue bobbin holder. Good warning about how easy it is to ruin a bobbin holder and mess up the bobbin race! -- Favymtz |

Jim, I have used the 12 wt thread to make a queen size quilt and it was a night mare. it made fuse and lots of lint, so you had to clean the bobbin case frequently. When the quilt was finished it was very heavy from the weight of the thread not the cotton material. So the thread is in a box and I have not used it sense. Shirley from NJ

I had an almost $200 bill to repair my 500e the one and only time I tried using the Madeira Glamour thread. I was told that I should have slowed down the machine as well as taking the other precautions, but I’m afraid to try it anymore. Lesson learned!

I use a separate thread stand moved about 8 inches away from the right side of the machine. If that doesn't work put the spool on a horizantal spool pin. Hope that helps.

Hi,
Thanks to everyone for their quick replies. Jim I did check the bobbin case and the hook race. The case had some nicks but not the hook race. I was able to buff the nicks out and have been able to embroider with 40wt thread without any problems. I’ll try some bobbin work with it and see how that goes. I can use it on my serger too. Diane |

Diane, yes, the heavy threads make beautiful rolled hems on the serger! We only need to put it in the upper looper with regular serger thread in the needle and lower looper. Favymtz -- Favymtz |

Maybe this thread is meant to be used as “couching” thread and applied as decorative. It could also be put in the cording foot (I think) and done to be decorative this way as well. After all we are using it for a “bling” effect on the fabric.

I don't use the thread cutter with metallic thread and never with anything over 30 wt. I may just be overly cautious but I think the idea of sharpening by cutting with foil has been debunked. Ceil

i learned in thread classes that 12 wt. was for bobbin work or sergers. I've used it for both, but don't really like bobbin work because the thread has to be wound too often.

My understanding is that this type of thread is strictly decorative, and not for quilting. 12wt thread can be used in a serger for decorative stitching by threading it through the loopers, but not through the needles.

It isn’t a thread I’ve ever used, but I did Google it, and it recommended to use a 100/16 needle and Madeira make a Glamour needle so perhaps that’s a match for the glamour thread. It’s also used in hand quilting to add texture, bobbin and loopers on sergers.
Recommended if using it on a machine to lengthen the stitch (makes sense with a bigger needle) slow the machine as well. If I give it a go I’ll try it on my 6600P it is a bit of a workhorse.
