Using DST format

Anne, yes, "convoluted" is a good word for it.  I have found, from working in IT for 30+ years and supporting multiple operating systems and networking platforms, even before 'windows' was more than sheets of glass and metal or wood, that many things fit this description in the Windows world.  I won't rant about how annoying dealing with the 'worst' OSes 'ever' is to me either.  There should never be a need to 'hack the registry' to change 'simple' settings in an OS...or convince the OS what to do on a specific mouse click.  All of the 'settings' that are concealed in Windows unless you happen to get lucky and find the 'magic' button or tab or right-click or instructions come back on the first page of an internet search...LOL  Boggles the mind!

I know all too well the maladies that can happen when Windows auto-updates without you knowing...that is why I have always turned that feature off and why I was not interested in the Win10 upgrade.

Take care!

It was a bit difficult to read your post, but it seems to be exactly the same instructions for Win 8 to find the BIN folder etc etc as I stated for Windows 10 (sort of thought it would be anyway! :0)) - and would probably be the same for Windows 7 (no longer have either have upgraded both machines to Win 10) .  It is a bit convoluted but worth it if you are going to be using lots of .DST files.

Anne,
With a lot of trial and error, that's the process that I finally came up with.  Now all the .dst files can be opened.  I am using Windows 10 and just recently converted all my files (family, finance, etc.) to this different computer so it's certainly been a learning experience.  At some point I will have the fun of doing this all again as I will eventually transition to an Apple laptop but for the moment I'm using Windows 10 and happy not to have lost (as far as I can tell) any files.
Old dogs can learn new tricks!
Thanks.

Thanks, Cat.
I ended up going into program files to open the .dst and set the Emblink tool as the default.  It worked!  It was trial and error but now all .dst files will be opened this way.  I have found that there are some files that aren't available in .jef format.  I think there must have been restrictions of some sort on .jef in the past as, on other sites, I've been told that .jef has problems and in fact, WilcomtruesizerWeb doesn't allow for larger Janome  hoops.  So now at least when .dst is offered instead of the preferred .jef, I'll be able to access those designs.  The colors are always funky but that can be part of the fun (or frustration).

Ceil...Anne,

When you are trying to set the "File Associations" so that HLS is 'called' first and 'asked' by the OS to 'open' the .DST when the file is double-clicked, can you 'explore' the hard drive...maybe a button with "..." or "browse" or something like that?  (I have Windows 8.1 x-64...not Win10, so don't know what that screen is like.)  If you can browse (drill down into the directory/file structure), MY HLS is at:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\janome\HorizonLinkSuite\Bin

and the .EXE files would the the ones that would need to be associated.  These are listed on my installation:

    AcuFilTool.exe
    EmbLinkTool.exe
    HorizonLinkSuite.exe
    PatternComboTool.exe
    ScreenSaverTool.exe
    StitchComposer.exe

(The names are somewhat self-explanatory, but some of those doubtful you'd want to bother with...like the screensaver tool or the stitch composer tool.)

Also, if you double-click on a .DST file, do you get any kind of prompt that 'asks' if you want to 'always use' the program you select? (Again, you may have to navigate through the subdirectory tree to where the binary executables are stored.)  If, so, make sure that option is 'checked' so that after you drill down to the subdirectory where the actual program executable files are located, that you only have to do it once.

Hi Ceil

You can set HLS to open the .dst file

I don't know what operating system you are using, but at least in my Windows 10 you can't set it using the normal Control Panel root - at least I can't find HLS or Emblink in the list of programs to assign it to.

However if you right click on any .dst file you should get an Open With option so you can assign to an app or program.  Click on that and you should get a list of programs to choose from.

HLS and EMBlink will not be in the list  - so it also then offers an option to look on your PC.  If you want to always open with the program you are going to select make sure that option is checked/ticked before going any further.

Select the option to look on your PC.  Mine took me to the Program Files folder - but you need to navigate from there to the Program Files (x86) folder.  Find the Janome folder - open and find the HorizonLinkFolder - open that and find the BIN folder - open that and select EMblinktool.exe.

This should open the file in EMblinktool.exe and then in the future open any .dst file in EMBlinktool - provided you put that check mark in at the beginning! :0)

Let me know if you have any problems

Maybe you need to update your Horizon Link software.  The latest version is 1.2 I can see dst along with jef when I use Horizon Link to check designs on my computer.

You might also need to update your machine.  The latest version is 2.1

As I said, Janome 15000 and 500E reads DST.  I’m sure Jim will be double checking this.

Cheryl,
You're right!  I should have said Horizon Link.  I do everything on the computer then send it to the machine so I don't know why I wrote that the way I did.  Once I updated Horizon Link, it read the dst files so I'll be able to send them to the machine.
The .jef files on the desktop can be clicked and they open in HLS but I have to first open HLS and select "open" to open the .dst files on the desktop.  But at least they open now.

Hi Ceil,

Horizon Link is not the same as the sewing machine, so it may not recognize the DST format.  I don't know about my 15000 as I haven't tried one in it.

How does this work?  I can't find a way to have my 15000v2 read dst and I'm sure Jim said it could not read it.  When I put a dst file on my desktop, Horizon Link won't recognize it as it recognizes .jef.  Is there some way to have it "see" the dst file?
Thanks.

Anne,
Thank you!  That was it.  I changed computers and after installing the Horizon Link on the new computer, failed to update it!  Just did so and now it reads those .dst files.
Now to wonder what else I forgot to update when changing computers...
Thanks again.

What version of Horizon Link are you using?  My Emblink Tool is version 1.2 and works fine. Though I haven't tried sending to my 15000 as I have no need to use them.

Have you installed all the most recent updates for Horzion Link Suite and the 15000v2?  If not I would do that first and test again.

Someone else has probably already responded to this but I’ll respond just in case no one else notices.

The 15000 Version 2 and the 500E will both read DST format.

Thank you!  I won't save any more .dst files then as a MB-4 is not in my future.

I thought I read somewhere here that the MC can read .dst format.  I searched but did not find the instructions.  I have been saving some .dst format files but when I put them (unzipped) on the desktop Horizon Link does not recognize them and therefore cannot open them as it does with .jef files.  Is there some way to do this or am I mistaken about being able to use .dst files?
Thank you.

[Ashes to ashes, .dst to .dst - yet another mystery of life]

The Janome MB-4 models are capable of reading .DST in addition to Janome formats. The logic behind that is that they are quasi-commercial models and .DST is the most common format in the commercial world. However the Memory Craft models, including the 12000, 14000, and 15000 are limited to .JEF and .JPX. There are lots of utilities that will convert .DST to .JEF, but keep in mind that the .DST format does not contain any color information. This is normally provided in a separate file for use in stitching. Conversion programs will assign arbitrary default colors that are dependably wrong, so your designs will look very weird on the screen of the machine.
