I would go with 2 layers of medium weight cutaway layered crisscrossed. they say 1 layer for every 10,000 stitches but if you are using kona cotton (and not a stretch fabric) you should be OK with 2 l

I had this same problem to the point where the dealer replaced the whole mechanism (takeup lever etc) and got it home and it did the same thing again, very frustrating! One person told me a quick fix

I'm doing a hoopsisters wedding ring with a satin....I had to adjust my tension all the way up to 8 before it made a difference...there was no bobbin thread at all before that. Norma
