Could it be that many of us have had this experience?   :).  I was ready to take my machine back to the dealer and what a relief to change plates and have it magically work again!!!!

Sounds like you have one of the “single hole” plates on. When that happens the stitches that have sideways movement are grayed out.

What throat plate do you have on the machine? If it is the HP or straight stitch plate it will not allow you to pick the zig zag stitch.

Hello Jane,

It is probably one of Janome’s many blessings.  Do you have the straight stitch needle plate on?  Or the HP plate?

The plate you have on determines which stitches become available as a preventive to breaking a needle. The machine won’t let you do a zig zag because the needle will strike the plate...and break!

This is usually the answer to your dilemma.

How many times was I just as aggravated as you?  More than I care to admit. 🤣

I always hope the “wizards” at the other end of a web query always tell the truth; but for now, I ask those mysterious people everything from “How much mustard is a substitute for dry mustard”, to “Why won’t my Janome sew a zig zag?”

Blessings,

Maria

Have you got the straight stitch plate on it.  The straight stitch plate has a narrow hole for the needle, for zig zag you need the other plate with a wider slot for the needle.  When you put the straight stitch plate on it automatically restricts the type of stitches you can do to stop breaking needles and damaging the machine.

have you changed the needle plate to the zig zag plate?

Are you sure you have the correct plate on.  If you have the straight plate you will be very limited in the stitches you can select.

Hi Everyone:  Well, I'm totally frustrated.  In trying to do a zigzag stitch, I noticed there all greyed out.  On this main page, it says Utility Page 1 of 2, when I push the down arrow, it goes to Quilt Page 6.  So, I push the "Home" button & get to the quilt page & it is frozen.  I can select anything else?  Not applique, and I can't remember the name of the other apps.  When I do select the quilt page - it is stuck on page 1 and it won't scroll thru the other pages.

What the heck?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Thanks!  June

You might have the straight stitch plate on your machine.

Try changing the plate and select a stitch and see if it happens again, if it is the plate the message should clear, if it doesn’t could be the sensor.  Did the error occur whilst in the shop, it must have been ok or he wouldn’t send it back, perhaps something has happened in transit to cause it again,  maybe it shifted when cleaned but has shifted again in transit

It just came back from the shop and he cleaned it and has the right plate on and I just put it back on the sewing table and that message came up again the minute I turned it on   Puzzled

I’ve had a 12000 for several years, and never had an issue with it.  It’s been a great machine, lots of happy hours stitching.  My only thought is as someone has said its the needle plate, is there any fluff in the sensor top right?  Have you changed the needle plate and tried that to see if it still throws up the error message?  Have you tried it at the dealers when you collect it, or always wait till you get home to test it?  Or is it ok on getting home and then after a while starts again?  If so, is it after changing something like the plate or a needle or a setting?

I had the same problem and had the needle plate sensor changed.  that didn't solve the problem with my straight stitch needle plate.. And since have purchased a new needle plate.  Mostly I am fine but occasionally, especially on straight stitch it still happens.  never a problem on embroidery mode.
