Re: Hands on workshop on 12000 and 15000--Anne in the UK

I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

I think it's because the machine is now so long from one end to the other and the knee lift has to be where it is that the distance has increased from where you sit to where the knee lever is.  They need much more adjustment, but I guess if they increase the adjustment using the current design it would increase the angle at the point it gets to the right distance and be too high for the knee - hope everyone understands that explanation!

I think it needs a redesign - it needs two points of adjustment so that it can be set in just the right place for people my height (4ft 10ins) and those a lot taller. (6ft plus). There must be lots of variation in the hip to knee length of different people so the swing to the knee lift would also vary over quite a large range which is not addressed by the current adjustment.

Jeannie,
You can buy these designs (Anita Good Designs) at a web site called An Embroidered Affair in the states. Carolyn carries the designs or can order them for you.
I joined her yahoo group and have purchased from her.

The web site is: www.anembroideredaffair.com
Hope this helps,

Chiming in like Big Ben, Jim says:
The blue dot bobbin case has reduced tension for use with free motion embroidery. It should not be used with embroidery, as it will cause the bobbin thread to pull to the top. Diane has done a lot of free motion work in conjunction with the My 15000 app and used the standard red dot case for all of it without any problem.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts that the blue dot was looser - I just knew I had read that somewhere!  I think Cas ment she was using embroidery thread for the FMQ on those graphic parts of her design, so what I though seems to be correct about using the blue dot - and as you say you need the yellow for the machine designs though.

Good to know Diane has done the FM work using the standard red dot bobbin case.  My approach is always to use the standard settings unless you are having problems.  Makes life less complicated and easy to remember.  Of course I will experiment to see what the difference is if I change one thing or the other, and use that to learn things and help me understand problems that may occur that are not documented anywhere - or resolve issues before I get them.  I'm a great planner so that I eliminate issues before I get them and ensure as far as possible that as little goes wrong as possible when I am working on an actual project!

Have you tried changing the orientation of the knee lift? In the manual it shows you how to do that…I did and now I am fine with the angle of it being much closer.

I have tried all the feet.  I think I was having the most luck with the PD-H, mainly because I could see what I was doing better.  I may even cut an opening on the red lines.

I like the way the QC hovers slightly above the fabric though.  I didn’t realize I could set it to stay higher, which page is that on?

Jim the bobbin doesn’t usually jump like that, which is why I wondered if it is because of tension issues with the weird combination I had, as in the yellow dot bobbin with bobbin thread while FMQ.  I haven’t bought the My 15000 app yet.  Does Diane actually sew items and explain tension and other issues on the videos?  Do you have a sample of a video like that?  I noticed you said you took the music off and gave a demo before.  Does it show a close up on the app of where I should examine the bobbin for burrs?  I can look up a diagram of the parts of the bobbin case maybe.

Thanks,
Cas

Being of an age where closeups are best avoided, Jim says:
The yellow dot case shouldn't be used with FMQ. It has increased tension for embroidery and will give poor results when used with FMQ. Depending on the weight of the quilting thread, I could see where it might cause bobbin jump.

There is quite a bit of sewing in the app, particularly in the Sewing Applications section. The background music has been made optional, not completely removed. There is a 30 second video in the App Store listing for "My 15000" viewable on an iPad. It shows the features. We don't address stitch problems in the app at the moment, though we might in the future if there appears to be a need. Diane has been working on a new video that will answer a lot of questions. It's quite large, so it's taken some time. We hope to have it finished by month end. It will just appear in the app when released.

Anne, it’s a long floatie, used for water aerobics or for kids playing.  It’s foam, but more durable than Styrofoam.  Here’s a picture:  http://www.enjoy-swimming.com/water-noodles.html

I have a couple of them, but it wouldn’t help the length because it would bend, I need more length so the lever is below the counter more to I can just move my leg sideways.

It really depends on how they are digitized.  Most software allows you to auto digitize or manually digitize the picture.  I can tell you 98% of the time when you auto digitize it, you find yourself going back and fixing a lot of the design.

I use Generations Embroidery Software and I manually digitize because it takes less time.

If you find one that has a problem then let the digitizer know and they are usually nice enough and will fix it for you.

12000 question on embroidering

mdaniel@...

I embroider inserts for the Lydia project (www.thelydiaproject.org) that are sewn into small totes, filled with toiletries, and given to women with cancer.

Each insert measures 3 1/4" x 11 1/2". They are embroidered with "Faith", "Hope", or "Love" in purple embroidery thread.....BTW,if you have excess purple thread, I would love it as I go thru a lot. :)

I have embroidered these inserts on my 350E (5x7 hoop) but would love to figure out how to do them on the 12000, as my hoop is much larger so I can do 4 at a time instead of just 2.

What I plan to do is hoop tearaway, then center and pin the inserts on to the tearaway, starting at the top of the GR hoop, one right under the next.

With my 350E, I have to move the needle to the correct start position for each insert. I have 2  5x7 hoops so I trade them out before repositioning the needle.

My question is, can I "set" them on my 12000 to start at the top insert and embroider one insert and then move on to the 2nd, etc. without me having to reposition the needle? If so, how do I do this?

Any tips, ideas, etc. of how this could be done easier are very much appreciated. I usually embroider 125-150 inserts before I mail them back to Lydia, so anything easier or more efficient is very much appreciated.

Thanks!! Jo

Anita Gooddesign only sell their designs through a dealer.  You could order one from a dealer and they will send you the CD with the designs.  I've tried to see if I could get them here in Canada, after attending an event sponsored by Mulqueen's Sew and Vac in Mesa, but couldn't do anything.  Fortunately, I frequent that store when I'm in Arizona (but that isn't often) and if I want something I purchase it there.  Mulqueen's would sell and mail you a copy.  There are lots of dealers, Mulqueen's is just the only one I know.

Anne,

It is a long piece of soft plastic that is buoyant in water and in Canada, folks use it to keep a float in a swimming pool or lake.  It has a hole through the centre, so it would work nicely to put on the knee lift to add some depth to it - I'm not sure it would work for you but worth a try if you can get on in the UK.

Do you have Jim and Diane's DVD or APP - they will solve all those issues as they address most of them and very thoroughly.

Robyn,
I'm trying to remember some of the basic things that puzzled me when my machine was new last fall.
- Do show them how to attach the tiny plastic feet [the ones where you hook them in the back before you snap them on]
- Demo changing bobbin case and how to clean that area
- Practice using the combining feature and all the interesting/useful behind the scenes info available on that screen [the length that can be adjusted]
- Talk some about the Janome needles and their specific uses. We all think we 'know' needles but ...
- How to best use the programmed stitches in the Application/Tee shirt icon
- Using the AcuFeed feet [when to use one over another
- Using the iPad apps, AcuDesign, etc.
- Demo Jim & Diane's 'well worth the money' app and FootBook as well
Too much? Just some thoughts from a recent owner.

Thanks to all who replied about the 'noodles'  - it just shows I haven't been in a swimming pool for a while - off to a spa weekend in March so maybe they'll have some there! :0)

Mags

I'm very familiar with that pipe insulation (another of my hobbies is DIY) and actually have some in the garage.  I will try that first once I get my machine in it's final postion so I can test out the knee lifter properly and see how much closer I would like it to be.  Still sorting out the sewing studio at the moment.

If that doesn't work I'll try the noodle and the sponge - I think that at least would put the point of contact in the right place.

In the summer they are in Tesco/Sainsburys etc and swimming pool stores have them.
They are about a metre long and made of stiffish polystyrene

Anne, it’s a thick foam “noodle”…. maybe 3 inches thick, with a hole up the center. Used as a toy or flotation device in a pool. You can use a bread knife to slice 6 inches off and then slice an opening to the hole in the center (to fit the piece over the bottom end of the knee lever). Foam pipe insulation in the US is usually sold in 4 foot lengths, black foam, not as big a diameter as the pool noodle, but they already have the lengthwise slit in them.

HTH!

My two favorite things on the 15000 are the outstanding lighting and the extension table. There is something in the plastic that makes it more “slippy” than any other I’ve ever used. I told Janome (I am affiliated with them as a teacher, author yada yada) that they should start making ALL their tables in this plastic—it is simply PERFECT.

And I second the information on How to best use the programmed stitches in the Application/Tee shirt icon.

Folks also need to understand how to access the adjustments so they can alter tension as needed, the height of the QO/QC feet, etc.

Cheers, Sarah
