Re: Windows 10 or V5 First?

I installed Windows 10 on my husband's computer after reading and believing this:  I think it would be a mistake not to upgrade to 10 if you're able.  http://www.howtogeek.com/220957/no-windows-10-won%E2%80%99t-require-a-subscription-heres-how-microsoft-plans-on-making-money-instead/

Windows 10

Linda M <linlefmul@...>

Not sure where people are getting their information from about Windows not being free, it is and will be

What people fail to understand is that Microsoft is generously GIVING YOU a free update for a year, after that, the update is no longer free.

Here is part of the explanation

Microsoft has previously said this Windows 10 upgrade will be “free for the first year.” This means that this free offer lasts a year — from July 29, 2015 to July 29, 2016. You have a year to get your free upgrade. If you don’t upgrade by July 29, 2016 and try to upgrade on July 30, Microsoft won’t give you Windows 10 for free.

If you do upgrade within the first year, you get Windows 10 for free, permanently. You don’t have to pay anything. Even after it’s been a year, your Windows 10 installation will continue working and receiving updates as normal. You won’t have to pay for some sort of Windows 10 subscription or fee to continue using it, and you’ll even get any new features Microsft adds.

Then What Exactly is “Windows 10 as a Service”?

If Windows 10 is completely free, then what is all this talk about Windows being a “service” going forward?

Well, to hear MIcrosoft tell it, they’re changing the way they develop and deliver Windows. This is tied together with Windows 10 being “the last version of Windows,” as some are saying.

Windows 10 will be updated and developed on an ongoing basis going forward. Microsoft won’t work for three years on a Windows 11 with new features and attempt to sell you an upgrade. Instead, they’ll continue adding features and improvements to Windows 10 itself on an ongoing basis. You won’t have to pay for these features. Windows 10 will just receive regular updates with the features that would otherwise have been held onto for Windows 11.

You Won’t Be Able to Disable (or Delay) Windows Updates on Windows 10 Home
Microsoft says Windows 10 will be “always up-to-date,” and they mean it. There’s no way to turn Windows Update off.... [Read Article]

In this way, Windows 10 becomes more like Google Chrome — something that’s continually updated in the background. That’s why you can’t disable Windows Update on Windows 10 Home, and you can only delay updates on Windows 10 Professional. Microsoft wants to get all modern Windows computers on the same version of Windows and keep them updated, creating a single platform for developers to target and a single platform they have to support with security updates.

Windows 10 is more like the operating systems on a Macbook, Chromebook, iPhone or iPad. You don’t have to worry about paying to upgrade to the next version of the operating system — you just get those improvements for free.

You've all done very well in cleaning up after yourselves and keeping our community kitchen spotless. I was about to rant about the disgusting furry thing at the back of the fridge, at least until I discovered it was a carton of prune yogurt that I left there in September. There are a few other items though that deserve a small mention:

Moderation

No, not referring to your level of wine consumption. After all, age goes better with wine. I'm referring to the fact that every post that appears on this list must first be read and approved by our staff, which is me. I'm not out to censor anyone (and you know who you are, you bawdy wench!) but I do need to filter out those spurious and dangerous emails that purport to be from a member. Usually they say "Hey check this out!" and include a link that would cause malware to be installed on your computer. I delete them for your safety. It may seem unlikely, but I do have a bit of a life outside of the list, and sometimes there is a lapse of hours between the time you post and the time your post appears in email. Please don't assume that Yahoo has malfunctioned, although you would quite often be right. If you re-post and I don't catch the duplicate it just clutters up the list. Please wait 24 hours before assuming that Yahoo has failed, or that I have moved into the narrow apartment.

Replies

This list is all about the sharing of information. Without that we've got nothing but a whinge-fest. (If you are unfamiliar with the term 'whinge' Google it or ask someone from UK or Australia.) When crafting your response please trim off the bits of the 34 others who replied before you. Otherwise we have a post that becomes a list in its own right and threatens to break the Internet like a Kardashian. Some members have to pay for each precious nugget of information that they harvest from the Internet and extraneous information just costs them money that might be better spent on fabric. Those of us with "unlimited" cable connections cheerfully overpay for unmetered service that delivers at 10% of the speed we are supposedly paying for. This will continue until mergers and acquisitions eventually result in a single gigantic cable company that provides substandard service sometime between 10am Tuesday and 4pm Friday, please be home when we call.

Beware the echo

So a digest arrives and the first post asks the age-old question "Should I put peanut butter in my bobbin case to make it run smoother?" Many (or most) of you will immediately hit the reply button to follow up with the obvious answer of "Creamy or crunchy?". This results in a digest that is 20-30% echoes of the same reply, which coincidentally was the very next post in the original digest. That makes for tough reading and some may give up in disgust, causing them to miss the critically important answer to a question at the end of the digest. Missing that, they ask the very same question the next day, of course only after using the completely useless search feature in Yahoo Groups. So please avoid making fast replies until you've read the entire digest and made certain that no one else has already said what you planned to say. Of course if you feel it's important to issue a reply in the Klingon language, that's fine, but be aware that this can offend Romulans. Oh, and of course you probably already know the correct answer to the peanut butter question, which is:

NEVER peanut butter, as this will attract rats and squirrels that nibble on your bobbins. Always use mayonnaise. It may attract ants, but they won't hurt your bobbins.

Thank you for your attention. We now return you to your regularly scheduled list. Cookies are in the oven if you care to wait.

Unfortunately the battery is a built in internal one.  A few months back, I asked at the big box store where I bought it about a battery replacement and they weren't sure if a battery was still available for it. It was obvious that they did not want to have to deal with it and I'm not sure where else to take it.  I know i can continue to use it plugged in if I need to...so it will tide me over for a while yet.

MBX 5.0 update

Caroline Wright

When opening the software yesterday was told an update was available but when I attempted to download, it crashed.  I was able to still get the program to open at that time.  However, today, I got a "hasp driver may need to be updated" message with instructions to go to Wilcom for assistance.  Tried Wilcom and apparently they don't support MBX?  Anyway, decided to go to the Janome site and try to download the update again and it installed and fixed the problem.

I had been reading all of the posts about problems with W10 free download and MBX and even though my system has been running perfectly with that combination and even on a Mac with Parallels, I was concerned that could be my problem.  Anyway, thought I would post this incase someone else has the same problem.

The MBX 5.0 update is from 5.0J to 5.OK

My computer "helpfully" installed Windows 10 automatically this weekend.  I did not want it installed.  Is there anything I can do to get my Windows 8 back????  I don't want to pay over $100 each year to use Windows 10.  I'd much rather buy material.  Ha  Ha

This helpful page will explain how to get rid of 10. Prevent Windows from helpfully installing it again using this tool.

Re: Embird and MBX V5

Betty's Original Embroideries

I have same issue with Bernina Software and they are both made by Wilcom.. Wish Wilcom would fix this glitch..
I found if you install Embird first then the MBX software after your icons will work.. Each time Embird has an update you have to re install MBX.. Just happened to me recently Embird had a new update and messed up my Bernina software icons.. So now I have to re install Bernina to get it to work right.. Just turn off Embird updates.. There is a glitch in it with iconizer but both will work if you do it that way.. Hope that helps with all those having same issues.. I have done it a few times now and it does work that way..

Designs in Acutools

Valerie Munford

I have an 14000 which came with the Acutools programme.

When I'm in embroidery editor on Acutools I click on design and then design folder. This then brings up the designs in my 14000. Only the first 49 designs are shown (world of embroidery designs).

I also have the 12000 which came with horizon link. In horizon link when I click on designs all of the designs in the machine are shown.
I want to add a design onto a pennant design. I know I can do this on the machine but I would like to do it on my laptop.

Has anyone else come across this? I am in UK. I have asked Janome UK who have been onto Janome in Japan who do not understand the question!

Val

[Hoping the question to understand I am!]

We don't have AcuTools, but you could also use HorizonLink since the 14000 has the same hoops as the 12000. The steps are as follows:

1. Choose the hoop you will use for your project.

2. Open the "base" design (pennant?) to insert it into the hoop.

3. Use the design button to add additional designs.

4. Click the "Edit" tab to get tools for centering, cornering, etc.

5. Use the bar on the right side of the screen to change the stitch order.

The entire process is detailed in our 12000 videos, which we shamelessly flog here.

After reading Maggy's message I thought I had finally found out how to get V5 icons to display images.  I went into Embird and disabled the iconizer; I even restarted the computer.  Much to my dismay I still did not get images of designs in V5. I really don't want to uninstall Embird as I may still not get images on V5.   Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Maggie, you totally agree with my friend who owns International Computer Associates and is a computer science college professor.  Ed is my PC guru; Jim is my Janome/Apple guru.  Nice to have gurus... :-)

Ed told me yesterday to stay away from the Win 10 they are trying to push because it is just that.. an upgrade and not a real full version of 10. He also runs Win 7 and like you said, will continue to run it until it is necessary to build a new desktop.   I am also running 7 and things are working fine for me. I just hate to rock the boat... sometimes it takes on water and sinks and that is what I am afraid the upgrade 10 will do.

Ed gave me a link to find the way to remove the upgrade pop up that comes up from Microsoft each time you boot up. He said it is important NOT to x it out or click yes, if you do you have it already on your computer just not installed.  So I am going to do the removal took because I am not sure that at sometime in a moment of idiocy that i did not close it out with that x.

As to free... I wondered about that and asked Ed about this free stuff because I could not imagine MIcrosoft giving anything free to anyone!   Ed said that was correct.  After you get it installed and some time is up the cost to use it will $129 per year.  He said all that is going to do is drive people to unix or apple.  He is so correct.

So I am not installing it.. will remove the upgrade from my desktop .. will happily continue to use Win 7 and smile and be happy.

It depends on what you mean by "without difficulty" . MANY people who have upgraded to 10 have encountered difficulty. The free upgrade does not become un-free until July 1. I would defer upgrading to 10 for the moment until Maggie says it's safe. (JB to PG - is it safe?)
Oh I'm all of a flutter, JB has called me, hang on while I compose meself, where's me glass of Pimms.

JB, is anything 100 percent safe, as the program has been upgraded to V5, and hopefully the previous version of MBX and Corel Draw Essentials x5 have been uninstalled, it should be fairly safe. The reason I wont say completely safe is because Windows 7 computers are already stuffed full of everything bar the kitchen sink, and that can be an awful lot of data to port across and then re establish once the upgrade to Win 10 has taken place. However if things like photos are backed up to external drives then deleted, they can be re inserted post upgrade, ( I have an HDD docking station and two 1TB HDDs, one is a clone of my C drive with my OS and all installed programs plus it is bootable, the other has all my files backed upon it, an external drive, plus Backblaze cloud back up) old unused programs uninstalled, a good spring cleaning of the files, the chances of a trouble free upgrade are increased.

In the case of the V5 upgrade, it is VITAL that Corel Draw essentials x5 and the extras that came with it are uninstalled before running the Win 10 upgrade. Windows 10 does not support Corel x5, if it finds it on the system it tries to update it then buries it in the bowels of the system, making it virtually impossible for end users to get rid of it or install the Corel x6 element of version 5. Another problem that has surfaced is some Embird owners are experiencing problems installing V5 on win 10, Embird is preventing Corel x6 installing, at this point in time I don't know if the V5 Wilcom team, Janome tech support, Corel tech support and Embird's team have come up with a solution. Until they do it might be wise to uninstall Embird after making a copy of the license key/s on a USB, then once V5 is installed, reload Embird, disable its iconiser as V5 has it's own iconiser and Embird's iconiser interferes with it.

My own view on installing Windows 10 as an upgrade on an older system, which Win 7 is, and my other workstation is running Win 7, is simple. I took a look at the amount of data on my 4 internal hard drives, the age of the computer,5 years, the processor, a dual core xeon i3, and said thanks but no thanks.  The workstation I'm using to write this on was a month old when I upgraded to Win 10, it has an 8 core xeon i5, a top end quadro video card, coupled with a 4K monitor with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, fully updated drivers, but Win 10 ignored the drivers and inserted generic ones which gave me a monitor resolution of 978 x I think it was 540 but can't remember now. It then gave my specialist Cad display card a 6 year old driver downgrading it badly, one hour later I had reverted to Win 8.1. However not everyone uses workstations designed for Cad graphics, I do not intend installing Win 10 on this system, but when I replace my old workstation I will get Win 10 as the operating system pre installed not as an upgrade.

So personally I would wait until I needed a new computer, not because I don't want to learn my way around a new OS, but Win 10 is system hungry, and older off the shelf PC's just don't have the system resources needed to run bigger newer operating systems. As V5 is running sweetly on my Win 7 workstation, I ignore the word 'free' there's no such thing as 'free' in commerce, and Microsoft is a commercial enterprise, I'm continuing with Win 7 on my 5 year old workstation until I need a new workstation then I'll get win 10 as a clean install not an upgrade.

My laptop at home is 3 years old and my desktop at work is about 7 years old, both have been upgraded to Win10 and I keep wondering why I didn't do it sooner.  It works great.  I love it.

My husband's laptop is also 3 years hold, before the upgrade he was having issues with some online games and now he doesn't.

Personally, I highly recommend the upgrade.

PS;  We didn't loose any files or pictures..  We also had taken precautions and copied everything to the cloud and a third computer but it wasn't needed in our case...

Windows 10 or V5 First?

guequies@...

I have a laptop running Windows 7 and have MBX 4.5.  My V5 is on its way.  Should I upgrade to Windows 10 or V5 first?

Sherry

[Like chickens and eggs, something must come first. But what?]

First you should read Maggie's post from this morning. (Thanks Mags!) She succinctly explains the pitfalls, as well as why you may want to bypass Windows 10 for an existing computer. Before installing V5 you should completely uninstall MBX 4.5. It does not need to be present to upgrade - the dongle is all that is needed. This will help prevent problems if Windows 10 does subsequently get installed. Be aware that Microsoft Update may "helpfully" install Windows 10 automatically. That can be prevented using this utility. Historically each new version of Windows is built for the latest and greatest hardware. If your computer is more than a year old, it may be a stretch for it to run Windows 10. Additionally if it is an off-the-shelf model, such as Dell or HP, there are pre-installed drivers that will not be installed during a Windows 10 upgrade. This can lead to support nightmares and loss of function. Read Maggie's post again for confirmation.

Finally I called them and they walked me through fixing it.  Weird things was at first it worked, but once I shut down the computer and rebooted it, then it became a nightmare and I couldn't use it at all until I finally called Janome. They usually take a day or two before they get back to you, but they will call you
