Re: Flat felled seams in jeans

I, too, probably wouldn't stitch a true flat felled seam on denim with the Skyline. A mock flat felled seam would be fine. On my 12000, I use wash away Wonder Tape to hold seams in place and stitch with the zipper E-D foot on the "single" even feed foot. It's the perfect width to ride right on top of the seam. I move the needle position to the left or right and align the edge of the foot with the seam. And if it's really denim, a jeans/denim needle works best to avoid skipped stitches or needle breakage.
Alina has a good explanation of using the Wonder Tape for this seam.

My 15000 is updated! I dropped it off at my Central Florida dealer Monday (9/18) and picked it up Tuesday (9/19) afternoon. When i picked up the machine he walked me through the new feet and changes. We talked about the HP plate and foot and the ruler foot. Dealer thought it would take a day of playing to get to know the changes. They have changed the screens a little so he gave me a quick tour. When we brought it home hubby set it on the sewing table and there it still sits untouched.

I taught an all day class at my guild Wednesday and today I had a few things scheduled. Tonight I started cleaning up the sewing room so tomorrow I can play!

I will report back after I try some of the new things.

I've done all those things.  The designs I'm using are not single run lines.  I think that is part of the problem.

You need to tent the quilt on the table around the sewing machine. That way you create slack to allow the hoop to move freely. I've done several quilts on my 12000 and never had distortion by doing it this way. It's important to have the weight supported on the table or in your lap depending on the area you are quilting. Also make sure you have the acrylic table under the hoop.

Cas,
If I wasn't right there when my dealer replaced the threader, I would not know the difference.  That said, I never had a problem with the old threader and my dealer felt that most had no problem either( in his experience.)  But he does a great job of making sure that things work well and adjusting them correctly if they don't!  I probably wouldn't notice the difference in the J foot (it has a slant) and the ankle either; but they are definitely different.

I have a flat-felled generic snap on foot for my older Janome.  I prefer to do it by folding and pressing the seam by hand.  At first I was thrilled to get this foot as I made a lot of cute boxers for my grandson when he was young.  It might be good to note that it can no longer be used with my machine as I have up update and I don't believe there is or likely will be an ankle that fits the new machine and attaches the slimmer feet. I did not use the foot for jeans either.  I found a much better result by sewing the seam, clipping, then pressing, then top stitching.  I would not use a double needle on denim.

I would NOT use a twin needle to do flat fell seams; there is just one bobbin thread which I think might get caught or wear out over time making all of your stitches come out :(
As far as the foot goes, use the F foot; it has a bit of a raised area underneath which  allows the thick seam to pass through relatively easily.

I don’t know the answer to your question but I am interested to see if the skyline stitched thru that much thickness.  Seems like a lot
of these newer machines just wont do it.  Not like the old singers did anyway.

Hi all,

I am in the middle of making a pair of jeans on my 15000 (and my Skyline 7 while the 15000 is getting its upgrade) and wondered what foot to use for the flat felled seams?

My old Pfaff had a flat felled foot (in two sizes) designed with a large tunnel underneath that funneled the thick seam through so that the stitching was lined up.
On the top of the foot, one side of the foot was higher than the other side to travel over the thicker seam.

I am thinking of using a twin needle to sew the double line of stitches. I have increased the stitch length to 4.0.

Any hints or suggestions on what foot (feet) to use to make this job easier. Janome doesn’t seem to make a flat felled foot.

Can you tell us more about the threader?  Is it still an automatic one?  Does it seem to work the same way?

Took mine to my wonderful dealer today!  While I was there he updated the machine with the software, new feet, and needle threader which he checked many time to ensure that it worked.  The update was free and he said he didn't understand why dealers would charge for it but it's up to the dealer, not Janome on this issue as apparently Janome can't set the rates for service.
Also got my upgrade kit at $135. (no tax as my dealer is in New Hampshire).  He's one of the top dealers in the country and has 71 update kits!
He is such a great dealer.  I said I was interested in getting the binding foot (big, expensive one) in the future and he said to call him first (I said probably in the spring) so that he could make sure the woman was there who can give me a 45-minute lesson on how to use it.  Free lessons for life.
I'm sharing all this to show what a dealer can and should be like.  He's a great guy and gives wonderful advice.

You are so blessed to have such a wonderful dealer at your fingertips; alas, wish more of them were like that.

After having my 15000 to the dealer and their part done, I am now unable to install the Horizonlink software update as I keep getting error message “Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN32\Janome.Stitch.Format\shell\Open\command.  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.”

I have turned off windows firewall, turned off antivirus, tried multiple things and 2 hours later I still get the same message. Send an email to Janome support but still waiting to hear.

I just purchased the 15,000 Memory Quilt machine with the new software and the new needle threader.  It works great but it has only been three days.  I love this new machine and you will love the upgrades!!!

15000 question for Jim.

Betty Scott

Jim. I am hoping you can clarify something for me. I have purchased the update kit for the 15000. Here in the UK we have to install the new software ourselves and then the machine goes back to Janome UK to have the new needle threader fitted. It seems this may be done for a few weeks. I have updated my machine with the new software.

It says in the booklet which came with the update kit it states "Please change the presser foot holder and embroidery foot from your existing ones to the new ones included in this kit. The automatic needle threader may not work properly if the presser foot holder is not changed"

I am not sure if the above instructions mean that I have to change these parts now or after the new needle threader is fitted.

Are you able to clarify this?

Betty Scott

We're still a couple of weeks away from having our machine updated. However I have learned that part of the update is the replacing of those parts. The originals could make contact with the threader and prevent it from operating correctly. You can change them now without disrupting the current threader or its replacement.

Re: 15000 update

Hello Cheryl

Here in UK we have to do the software update ourselves and the machine has to go back to Janome to have the needle threader changed. The software in the update kit is on a USB stick and also includes the Horizon Link update.

The update kit came from my local dealer so perhaps you should get in touch with your dealer.

Hi Monika,

Took my 15000 to the shop Tuesday for the update and hoping to get it back tomorrow. My dealer here in Colorado charged $149.99 plus tax (another $13.64). This dealer also sells Babylock and Bernina machines and they are having new updates installed on their top of the line machines too, so the service guy is really slammed right now. I am impressed that I can have mine back in 4 days.

I will post after I check it all out. I am working on a quilt where I am using decorative stitches in a circle pattern and one of the new features is the ability to have the software space out the designs evenly in a circle, wahoo!

Estelle

PS My needle threader worked okay, so I don’t know that I could tell any difference with a new one.

Thanks for that info Betty.

My machine is currently packed and stored at my step-daughters in Nottingham while we move to Wales - though as our chain has just collapsed we have no idea when we will be moving, though our buyers are still keen.

I will get in touch with Janome regarding what I should do.  Did you contact them or did your dealer contact you to advise.  I haven't heard anything from Janome or the dealer I am registered with.
