Re: Intro - Hobbits and Stands and USB - Oh my!

I'm baffled as to why NZ has to wait so much longer, when the 12000 is already making an appearance in Australia. Are they still upset about that whole "Lord of the Rings" movie thing? Like you could really recreate Middle Earth in the Outback? Sorry, I got a little distracted there!

OK, the thread stand. We just tried putting the 7700 thread stand on the 12000. It *almost* works, but it holds the handle up just high enough so that the lid doesn't quite open all the way. If you were on a tight budget you could probably make it work, but after selling a kidney to finance the 12000, what's a few more bucks for the official stand? The 11000 stand actually might be a better bet. There are screws on the back of the 12000, just as there are on the 11000, but they won't line up properly. However in the store we never actually screwed the stand down to the machine. We just used the metal bracket to hang it on the handle, and it worked fine. You could do that on the 12000 as well, continuing to use your existing stand. Mind you, we don't have one to test, but I'm sure it would work. Yes, the USB is much faster. There's also something else. When we operated the store, we always gave away a USB drive with every embroidery machine. Once we spent a bundle to get some USB "bracelets" that sported our name and phone, but the rubbery bit that made into a clasp for the bracelet made it really hard to get them fully plugged in. After that I just bought the cheapest ones I could get. One of my last purchases was a lot of very cheap no-name USB drives from a seller who was the Internet equivalent of the stranger wearing a trench coat in a back alley. They worked great in every computer I tried, but refused to be recognized at all in a single Janome machine. Since I had no recourse, we just used them in-house for the computers. I tried one in the 12000 and it worked great, no problems. So I have to say that the USB system in this machine is much better than any they've had before. --- In janome12000@..., "Tina Jensen" <jensen.rt@...> wrote:

Re: First Impressions
Donna Morton
Hi Everyone
To answer Tina’s Questions:
Yes, the designs read faster from the USB stick. The new HorizonLink
software that comes with the machine sends designs to the machine in a
flash!
The thread stand from the 11000 is not a good fit although I am using mine
until the new ones arrive. It will fit on the screws at the back but the
thread clip does not fit in the extra spool pin holder on the top of the
machine.
My machine arrived just this past Tuesday afternoon and I have used the
embroidery unit all day yesterday and today – even while watching Trevor’s
Digitizer webinar today. I really like that the 1 stitch stop now works
for all embroidery designs. On the 11000 the one stitch stop only worked
with designs placed in one of the acufil hoops. The basting is finally run
by the stop/start button and stops immediately if you need it too.
I’ve just started stitching a design that I purchased sometime ago from
Embroidery Library called Sleepy Hollow. It is a large design and I did
split it for stitching out in smaller hoops but never got around to actually
doing a stitch out. So glad I didn’t. It fits perfectly in the big
230 by 300 hoop! I did have to split it by colour and save in 2
files because of the stitch count as the HorizonLink software reported that the
design was over 100,000 stitches. I hope they make a change to this
software to automatically split a design into two sections like they did for our
old Customizer software at one point.
It is great that the support table can stay in place during
embroidery! Ingenious design. Will help with heavy or large items as
well as keeping these larger hoops level during a stitch out.
The sensor foot system is wonderful! While Janome has provided a
newly designed ergonomic knee lift (it really does work), when in embroidery all
you have to do is press Start. The foot lowers itself!
The design is currently stitching at top speed – 1000 stitches per
minute. So quiet in comparison to previous models. No thread breaks
at all over the 2 days I used the machine. The thread cutter is whisper
quiet – you don’t even realize that the thread is being trimmed.
The new bobbin thread that comes with the machine is nice and fine and the
bobbin winder does an excellent job of winding the bobbin. I do not miss
the bobbin winder on the 11000.
I do miss the needle threader! I never really had any problems with
the needle threader on my 10000 or my 11000 but I know it what a good thing to
switch back to a manual system as many did have nothing but problems.
I could go on and on but I must get ready for a class I’m teaching
tomorrow. For those who do not know me, I’m a retired home economics
teacher and now I teach at http://www.snipandstitch.com in Nanaimo,
BC, Canada. Some of you may have seen the designs I digitized with
Digitizer MB in Quiltmakers’ Quilt and Embroidery special editions last spring
and last fall. I’m a long time Janome fan and way back when the MC10000
was in its heyday I even created a quilt for Janome Digest showcasing how to use
the gigahoop. Back in those days I relied heavily on Jim’s expertise with
computers to help me out and it was great to chat with Jim and Diane at Janome
Institute this September.
Bye for now.

Only one more sleep!
christitch <nckrause@...>
My 12000 is here and I get to pick it up tomorrow...yay! I'm trading in an MC11000 which has been upgraded to an SE; it's six years old and in excellent condition. Would anyone know how much I might expect for a trade-in? (I should point out that my dealer is offering me a good price on the new machine - comparatively speaking!) Feel free to email me privately.

Re: Only one more sleep!
Jim_Stutsman <jim@...>
At six years I would guess you can expect something close to half the price of a new 11000. Of course every dealer is different, your mileage may vary, yada yada. One thing working against you is that the 11000 price has been steadily falling, and as more trade-ins come into the market, prices will drop even more. You might survey the market (Craig's List, eBay) to see what they are going for now to get an idea if you are being offered a good price.

May I suggest a menu of flat food, i.e. items that can be slid under the door to the sewing room? Pizza, cheese slices, thin bread. crackers. Spaghetti would fit, but it's so hard to push after it's cooked!

Introducing myself
long.cheryl1918@...
The hardest thing I've done in a while is convince myself to walk away from the 12000 at Betty's Bobbin Box! I may have to go back to work and get one before it's all done. Right now I have an 11000SE, 7700, 1200D and a Jem Platinum so my sewing room is extremely well equipped. The only justification I've come up with so far is that Caren will take my 7700 & 11000 in trade so that would give me more space in my sewing room. For now my husband doesn't necessarily think that's a good reason.
It's so good to see that Jim Stutsman is moderating this group, I look forward to learning about this gorgeous machine and finding a REALLY good reason to jump in and buy one. Cheryl Long in Midland TX |

Hi and a couple of questions
stitchnpatch
Hi - my name is Vicki and I live in the UK. I'm really looking forward to getting my machine which I hope will be delivered by the end of the month. I do have a couple of questions for those of you who already are playing with your machines - sounds like you are having great fun.
When embroidering what type of threads are you using in the needle and in the bobbin and have you had any issues with tension? Feet - all of the advertising literature says there are 20 feet but doesn't say what they are, is there one suitable for stitching leather eg a teflon foot? I only ask as I am doing a workshop in November when we shall be embroidering on leather then making it into a bag. The embroidering isn't an issue but the construction might be. Thanks Vicki |

Re: Introducing myself
Jim_Stutsman <jim@...>
Cheryl if you can do a dual trade-in, that's a hero deal. When Diane got the 7700 she thought it was the best machine ever. That's only happened twice before, first with the 7500 and again with the 6600. Now that she's got the 12000, she has decided that it's the ultimate best machine ever. The 7700 hasn't been turned on since the 12000 came out of the box.

Try a blitz approach on your husband. Clip pictures of the 12000 from the brochure and magazine ads. Leave them around the house, in drawers, on his pillow, in his truck, etc. After all Christmas is coming soon, and a few hints won't hurt! --- In janome12000@..., long.cheryl1918@... wrote:

Re: Hi and a couple of questions
Jim_Stutsman <jim@...>
Vickie we've used several different threads in both needle and bobbin, with no issues at all. Tension has been perfect with everything. When altering some jeans for our granddaughter, Diane was impressed by the machine sensing the fabric and applying just the right amount of pressure. She used a triple stitch to duplicate the look of the original stitching and you can't tell they didn't come from the factory. Perfect tension!

The 20 feet include all the usual suspects, basically 9mm versions of the standard feet that have always been included with top of line Janome models. The Teflon (Ultra Glide) foot is not included, and I suspect the 9mm version of that foot is not yet available to dealers. You can use the 7mm foot for your project if you get a high shank foot holder to attach it. You can either use the foot holder from the 7700 (Part #846572004) or the 11000 (Part #830504017). --- In janome12000@..., "stitchnpatch" <stitchnpatch@...> wrote:

Introducing myself from the UK
lindalawes@rocketmail.com <linda.lawes1@...>
Hi
I am Linda and just put down my money for the Janome 1200 at the launch show here in the UK. I can't wait until I get this machine home, hopefully in the next week or so. It seems you are all happy and loving this great looking machine. It will be a steep learning curve for me, I had a 10 year old Bernina and never sewn with a Janome. Luckily my local dealer visited the US to the launch and he will pass on all the tips I need ! I may need lots of basic help in the early days and so may post quite a bit !! thank you for starting this group Linda |

Re: Introducing myself from the UK
Jim_Stutsman <jim@...>
Linda when you start using the 12000, it's going to be like coming out of a hard rain to sit in front of a warm fire. Bernina makes decent machines, but a 10-year-old Bernina is absolutely primitive compared to this machine. As for questions, no worries - we're here for you!

Introducing myself
L.C. Northcutt
Hi, I am Cathy also from the UK.
I have been an owner of Janome machines for nearly 30 years and I absolutely love them. I also decided to up-grade from my MC11000SE to the new Horizon 12000 at the launch show this month. I have asked for my new machine to be delivered next Friday so I am really looking forward to trying out this new model. I have been using the Horizon 7700 as well but have now sold that to help finance the 12000. I live in the South East of the UK and hope some of the other UK owners may live reasonably near. Many thanks for starting this group, Cathy. |

Hi Cathy and Linda - I'm in Milton Keynes so not that far from Linda.
Cathy - just curious about how you've requested to have your machine delivered on friday? I also signed up last week at Ally Pally for the 12000 but haven't heard anything yet from Janome. I haven't owned a Janome sewing machine before but I do have a 350e embroidery machine and an overlocker. My other machines are a Bernina (which I'm going to sell) and a Brother, but I'm sure I'll get used to the 12000 very quickly as I've been really happy with the Janomes I've owned so far. Vicki |

Re: Hi and a couple of questions
Sue Sweet
Hi Jim and Vicki,
We haven’t had a lot of time to play with our store demo yet but were very
impressed by the quality of the embroidery we have done so far.
As for sewing on leather, we had a customer ask us to test the very same
thing. She had seen a sample of decorative stitch ( 120 I think Jim) but wanted
to sew it on leather. We used the Accufeed Flex (double) foot and there was no
difference to the sample of stitching done on cotton fabric. Very happy !
I am going to have to rethink my collection of machines and narrow it down
to a couple of models to include the 12000.

Discovery: Using the Embroidery bobbin case
Jim_Stutsman <jim@...>
As those who have the machine know, the 12000 comes with a second bobbin case for use in embroidery. They recommend using that case and the straight stitch plate for embroidery. Diane just finished an experiment, stitching the same design on Minkee Blankee fabric. One was done with the embroidery case and straight stitch plate, the other with the regular case and plate. The same stabilizer and thread was used on each. The tops of both pieces were pretty much identical. On the back the one done with the embroidery case showed less bobbin thread and more top thread, an indication that the embroidery bobbin case is simply higher tension. Both pieces were excellent. This would suggest that it's perfectly acceptable to use the regular case and plate for embroidery.
