Thanks for the info re the frames. That's exactly what I have in mind.
I had already made a few basting files which I have tested out just by hooping stabalizer and then basting the fabric to that -

I had a lot of breakage when I used a separate thread stand and had thebest results when I put the spool on the horizontal spool holder using thelittle “extra large spool holder” doo-dad to hold

Yes, the shelf liner works great, the gal in the video was attempting to accomplish the same thing without dealing with strips. I works also to make the same kind of frame she did but using the shelf

Troubleshooting is a patience game. Only try one change at a time. Before you blame the machine try the easy stuff. I know that thread can be of varying quality and not all expensive thread works
