Long quilting patterns for 9850?

Hi, Betty.  I often quilt in my embroidery hoops. In fact, I am creating a design combo for a friend’s quilt for her newest grandson-to-be right now.  For this project, I purchased several designs that were quilt ‘theme’ consistent and am considering which I want to use. These are edge-to-edge (e2e) patterns  designed for embroidery machines, but I plan to use them as ‘block’ designs. There are ‘block’ designs as well, depending on what you want, and since a long arm quilter lived here, I also have “theme” long arm e2e designs, in case she wants it quilted on the long arm instead. 

There are lots of quilting patterns for embroidery hoops created by others. Designs by JuJu, to name one I am remembering off the top at the moment, have lots of quilting designs but they are by far not the only ones that sell quilting patterns for QITH.  I also buy long arm designs so that’s what’s coming to mind mostly right now. 😁

Check the size before purchasing the design to make sure it will fit in your hoops. 

You also mentioned you’d like to ‘program each square’ so I’m not sure if you mean “digitize” or “compose ready-made” designs. I also digitize my own quilting designs using Wilcom Hatch, but there are other digitizing software packages, too. They might be a bit pricier than you’d expect so it’s your decision. 

I have a Janome 11000 v.3.10, and a Janome 15000 v.3, both of which have AcuQuilt, which comes with a special magnetic hoop designed for QITH. For the 11000, I have two sizes of AcuQuilt magnetic, quilting hoops. I don’t know if there is a ‘quilting’ hoop for your 9850, but I see in the manual there are some quilting designs preloaded in the 9850 by Janome for two of the hoops. You could certainly hoop a test quilt sandwich and give it a try.

I'm not familiar with your machine, but just looked it up.  I'm "guessing" you want to use the embroidery part of the machine vs. the sewing part to do the quilting?  If you're unable to use an embroidery stitch that you like (built in to your machine), you might want to purchase a quilting pattern from one of the embroidery sites (Embroidery Library comes to mind and they have all kinds of patterns and sizes).  If you want to do it on your machine (manually), you might want to try stitch 5 under the quilt menu (page 1 of 4 stitches).  Hope this will help.  Dottie in Texas

First of all create the stitch in Stitch composer. (Or are you using my french knot that I gave the group? If so save it on your computer where you know where it is!)
Then copy it onto your usb into the Ordf folder. (If you're creating the stitch yourself this is where you also save it, in the ordf folder.)
At the machine:
Decorative Stitches: Created Stitches
Touch the tab for bringing a design into the machine:

The Usb will open, find the stitch and select it.
The Stitch will now be in the Created Stitch section of the machine until, if ever, you delete it.
To delete a stitch, First touch the trash can button, then the stitch you want to delete.

I think what you want is on Page 64 of the manual. I don't know if you can save it to the machine, but you can import it from a USB drive.

Hello everyone!   Hope you have finally escaped lockdown.  Here in Australia it is in full swing!  I am trying to add a french knot stitch to my S9 and have no idea how to do it.  its a 9mm stitch which I can convert to .STX or .JPX but cant seem to find instructions on adding the stitch to the machine.  Can anyone help please, thanks and regards, Mary Mills who hates lockdowns!   XXX

Thanks so much for the update which I've copied for my files too, as I also have a 500E.  So pleased you have finally got it fixed as I had a niggling problem with my 10001 some years ago.  After about half a dozen trips to the dealer I said I wanted it to go back to Janome, to which they agreed but this didn't change anything because they got continual thread breakages too, not only that they returned a stitch-out of a built in design stating they had used my thread, fabric and bobbin and it was perfect.  Immediately I knew this was not the truth because I didn't own that colour or type of thread used for the test. 

In the end I found the problem myself and never had a thread breakage again.  Unfortunately a lot of dealers and their technicians, treat women poorly and think we don't have a clue but I'm pleased your dealer finally found the problem although (imho) if they had been doing a proper job the first time, it should have been noticed sooner and saved you all that angst.

Good on you for persevering.

Vikki---The model of my machine that was giving me so much trouble with the "bouncing bobbin" is an embroidery-only model MC500E. Quilty people sometimes will use embroidered blocks----and since the missing part that caused the problem is probably common to more Janome machines, the problem and fix may apply to other Janome machines.  It's just too bad that we don't know the specific, official name of the part.   Still, it is a good idea to keep this info for future info in your "oddball" file.

I am so happy for you! That is wonderful news. You shop manager is a keeper for sure! I had a similar problem with a VCR years ago. It was practically new when it started acting up. I, like you, took it in to the shop many, many times. It always worked well in the shop but not at home. We even had the manufacturing company's rep look at it. Turned out that it just wasn't playing nicely with my TV which was the same brand! It was a real fluke like your bobbin spacer and I wrestled with it for a year. I was beginning to think I was crazy! So, I can truly appreciate how happy you must be to have solved this issue. Now you can have fun with your machine again.

Switched my hoop to the floor model, traded bobbin holders between my machine and the floor model, did all kinds of adjustments but my machine remained noisy and jerky while the floor model hummed smoothly along, with my thumb drive and doing the very same design with thread I brought with me.  About that time, the shop manager noticed something different on my machine, as compared to the floor model. There was an obscure part completely missing from my machine!!!  The manager said that he had never had to replace this part and he did not even know its name, but he took the corresponding part off of the floor model and placed it on my machine and the bobbin calmed down and we sewed out a couple of designs containing almost 10K stitches each without the bouncy, noisy problem.   I also set my machine to do another stitchout as soon as I got home and it worked fine--quiet and smooth. Yayyyyy.

Now, I know you want to know what part was absent from my machine:  the manager said it was a "spacer" that holds another part in place firmly. The other part is the silver piece on the bobbin holder that has the colored mark --either red or yellow. You cannot see this spacer when it is in place; it rests below the silver part, which the spacer holds firmly in place.   We have no idea how and why this spacer was not present. I bought the machine brand new from an authorized dealer, sealed in its box. The machine performed perfectly for 2.5 years, and the "bouncing bobbin syndrome" started happening in late January of 2021. The first trip to the shop for this problem was in mid- February of 2021.  We did not find a broken or damaged spacer floating around the machine's innards, and the manager said that the spacer is not a part that would normally be removed during an routine cleaning/inspection. No one else has access to my machines.  I can only surmise that the spacer was left off during the initial build of the machine and it took a (long) while to manifest as the bouncing bobbin problem.   

When I made my first post about this problem, I promised to post my experience and the results--so here they are. Any of you who have had a similar problem might want to ask your dealer specifically about this "spacer" piece. There could have been a batch of bad ones at the factory, or maybe one assembly tech had a bad day and forgot spacers on some machines as they travelled along to their work station??  I don't know, but I am very glad to have my machine working properly --and quietly--once again.

Switched my hoop to the floor model, traded bobbin holders between my machine and the floor model, did all kinds of adjustments but my machine remained noisy and jerky while the floor model hummed smoothly along, with my thumb drive and doing the very same design with thread I brought with me.  About that time, the shop manager noticed something different on my machine, as compared to the floor model. There was an obscure part completely missing from my machine!!!  The manager said that he had never had to replace this part and he did not even know its name, but he took the corresponding part off of the floor model and placed it on my machine and the bobbin calmed down and we sewed out a couple of designs containing almost 10K stitches each without the bouncy, noisy problem.   I also set my machine to do another stitchout as soon as I got home and it worked fine--quiet and smooth. Yayyyyy.

Now, I know you want to know what part was absent from my machine:  the manager said it was a "spacer" that holds another part in place firmly. The other part is the silver piece on the bobbin holder that has the colored mark --either red or yellow. You cannot see this spacer when it is in place; it rests below the silver part, which the spacer holds firmly in place.   We have no idea how and why this spacer was not present. I bought the machine brand new from an authorized dealer, sealed in its box. The machine performed perfectly for 2.5 years, and the "bouncing bobbin syndrome" started happening in late January of 2021. The first trip to the shop for this problem was in mid- February of 2021.  We did not find a broken or damaged spacer floating around the machine's innards, and the manager said that the spacer is not a part that would normally be removed during an routine cleaning/inspection. No one else has access to my machines.  I can only surmise that the spacer was left off during the initial build of the machine and it took a (long) while to manifest as the bouncing bobbin problem.   

When I made my first post about this problem, I promised to post my experience and the results--so here they are. Any of you who have had a similar problem might want to ask your dealer specifically about this "spacer" piece. There could have been a batch of bad ones at the factory, or maybe one assembly tech had a bad day and forgot spacers on some machines as they travelled along to their work station??  I don't know, but I am very glad to have my machine working properly --and quietly--once again.
