The upgrade

cas <cassweet@...>

I wondered the same thing as some of you, why bother with the upgrade if you’re happy with the machine?

The upgrade does turn it into a Horizon Quilt Maker Memory Craft 15000, equivalent to the newest machine they sell:

http://www.janome.com/en/products/machines/15000/

It is super nice they upgrade the machine with these new features for only $150.00 instead of us having to buy a new top of the line machine.  I’ve noticed another brand has a brand new machine as well as another one coming out in a few months.  They seem to sell a new machine for new ideas even though the machines are almost identical.  This update includes some of those ideas, like the “stitch creator“ AcuStitch” and tapered stitches, similar to directional stitching.

I’m wondering, you quilters who have upgraded, can you sew a scant ¼” seam with the new foot and plate?  I notice it allows zero adjustment in the width.  Also, I wonder about the fabric feeding through nice since you are not using all the feed dogs.  How is that working out?

Re: Machine freezing

You could spray baste the quilt with products from the store.  Or you could glue baste it with Elmer’s school glue.  That’s what I use.  I put it in a micro-tip bottle I bought on ebay and lightly drizzle wherever I would put a pin, about 4” apart.  Then you let it dry, or dry it by lightly touching with an iron.

Does anyone have any suggestions for free motion quilting with something safer than safety pins

HP Foot

Claire Schutz

Today I have looked at the new HP foot and Needle Plate. The Plate has only one hole for the needle and the foot has a hole to the right of the slit.  What is that hole for, feel stupid asking this but can't figure out, thanks, Claire S.

It's probably a safety feature. While there is a sensor for the HP plate, there is not one for the HP foot. Conceivably it might be possible to have the HP foot attached without using after removing the HP plate. If you picked a center needle stitch it would hit the foot and cause damage. The hole prevents the damage, though in that scenario you would sew the foot to your project. Seam rippers are much less than repairs!

AcuDesign and Dropbox

Jim Stutsman

Regarding the AcuDesign/Dropbox work-around...

As many have discovered, AcuDesign is no longer able to import designs from Dropbox after the original Application Program Interface (API V1) was updated to a new version (API V2). Janome Australia has posted a method on their blog (http://www.janome.com.au/working-with-dropbox-acudesign-app-for-the-ipad/) that details a different method for importing designs. This works well, but only if the iPad is using iOS 11. Many of the original purchasers of the 15000 got an iPad model that can only be updated to iOS 9, so the method won't work for them. Also the Australian method does not provide for a visual icon of designs to be imported.

Fortunately there is a way to solve both of these problems:
1. Go to the App Store and install the free StitchBuddy View app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stitchbuddy-view/id602063961?mt=8) if you don't already have it.
2. Open StitchBuddy View and tap the Sync button (Arrows in a circle) in the top right corner. Turn on the iCloud Drive switch.
3. Move the designs you want to use into the StitchBuddy folder in iCloud Drive. This can be done on your computer. If you have a Mac then iCloud Drive is already available. For Windows you can get it here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201391. Note that you should only move designs, not folders, into iCloud Drive. StitchBuddy View recognizes folders but seems to crash when you try to open them.

Once the designs are in iCloud Drive you will be able to see them as icons in StitchBuddy View. To open one in AcuDesign just tap it to select it, then tap the Share button (Square with arrow) in the top right corner of the screen. Choose AcuDesign and the design will be imported. Note that if AcuDesign has not previously been opened it will complain and you will have to repeat the process.

StitchBuddy View also allows designs to be emailed or opened in other apps, such as AcuEdit. You can also print a detail page that provides a preview image and information about the design. StitchBuddy HD is a paid app that provides other options, as well as support for folders. Using that app allows you to manage all of your designs in iCloud Drive.

We were told at an Janome education presentation not to use an old P foot with the new upgrade as it would damage the needle threader.

My machine was not properly upgraded.  The needle threader was not replaced to the new one with the two rivets and I was not given a new P foot.  That is why the needle threader did not work.  This has now been resolved.

Sue,
During the first In the Hoop Quilting Project I saw Diane use thread basting for a quilt.  I had a very large quilt backed with Cuddle fleece to quilt and used the thread basting technique she used.  It was great!  No stuck fingers and I was able to baste the whole thing at once and very, very quickly too.  I used 12 wt thread and a needle in which the thread is popped into the top.  Amazing.  I will probably never use those quilt pins again and I'm tired of the smell and glue all over the place too!  I had a can of 505 foam all out at me once.  What a mess.  No more!

Re: Win10 and HL - New question for 15000 updated / upgraded

Jim, I've searched the conversations and found / tried all of the above mentioned solutions / sites.

After EmbLink took over, the images of .jef in Windows 10 explorer are no longer visible, except as a flower icon.  I can, however, see .hus / .pes files, etc., so I have cleared the explorer cache, reset the view in properties, etc.

I have Premier + Embroidery installed and use it regularly.  I think this is where the conflict resides, however, I have been unable to resolve the issue.  JAI tech support has not responded to my email.

The only other thing I can think of is where the HorizonLink files should reside on the hd.  Currently, it is installed C:\Users\user\Horizon Link Suite_v1.31.  Is this the problem?

I appreciate any ideas you may have.

Thanks,
Georgia

I think that this may be the single most annoying "feature" of Windows, in all versions. You install a program. The icons reflect that program and clicking on them opens it. Cool, this just works. Then you install a new program that handles the same types of files. It changes the icons the first program put in, and now wants to open those files. The first program is left out in the cold. It looks like Horizon Link Suite has taken over the JEF file association. This page will help you restore it: https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-set-default-programs-in-windows-10/

I'm beginning to think I won't bother with the update - haven't actually installed the one for couching either.  What benefit does this upgrade give you?

I'm probably only really thinking about it as my machine is in storage, and given the hic-cups we have had with our house sale it is seriously likely that I won't get it unpacked again until about March next year.

I have no real problem with the needle threader. Only very occasionally it hasn't worked, and that has been as far as I can remember when I have changed needle.  I guess it puts you off changing the needle, but that is the only glitch.  It works perfectly and does all I want it to do - so - can people tell me what benefits the upgrade has given you that you actually use?  Is the upgrade worth the cost of paying for it?

The tech is great in every way but the problem is now back on the laps of those in Tokyo for the third time. Yes, the third go round. We have tried everything imaginable that is known to man (except the one that would fix it). It has been several weeks now since my machine was upgraded but alas, I have no Horizon Link software, the original program is gone from my PC and not even the original CD will install for us. This is a registry error and it just gets deeper after that, lol. Sure praying for a resolution soon. Mine is just coming back to the store from the repair shop and they will do the update on Monday and I will pick it up on Wednesday. Based on some of these reports I think I will take the embroidery unit with me to make sure that it works ok since I am 2 hours over a now snowy mountain pass to get back to them! Appreciate the feedback!

Re: 15000 update

I had my 15000 updated and I bought the upgrade package. I went on a quilting retreat last weekend and sewed for hours with out any problems. The needle threader worked every time.

I used continuous quilting designs with my embroidery unit on a quilt and it worked wonderfully. The quilt was pieced by someone else in the quilt guild and the blocks were pieced, appliquéd and some embellishment but the embroidery machine created great quilting designs in each block.

I did some walking foot quilting and a lot of piecing with the quarter inch foot.

I haven’t tried out Horizon Link Suite yet but I did update it from the file that Janome emailed me after the tech at the shop called them to register my machine as updated.

My tech also said his workbench looked like a snowstorm after cleaning my machine, I did warn him that I had been sewing a lot of flannel recently.

So far I am a happy camper. I do know that there will come a time when I can’t haul the 15000 around but for now I rather sew on it more than my Skyline 7 which is a good machine or my old Pfaff.

Happy stitching,

Estelle
